The long road to SudburyJuly 9 2006 at 9:38 PM | Paddling4Poutine |
| Next week a bunch of us will be taking the long trek down hiway 17 from Montreal to Sudbury. Considering the wealth of knowledge contained in the nimble minds of forum readers, we figured that this is the best place to ask some burning questions:
1) Where's a good place to stop for a gourmet meal?
2) Are there any massage parlors on the way?
3) Are there any Tim Horton's on the other side of Ottawa?
4) Where can we find the comforts of home floating in a good poutine?
Thanks in advance. |

Tim Horton's in Arnprior
2 Tim's in Renfrew (both about 2 km off highway)
Next one is in Deep River (right on the highway) after Petawawa, past the halfway point between Ottawa and North Bay. Also there is the famous Deep River Dairy, great ice cream and real food in a restaurant as well as washrooms.
Then it's lakes and moose all the way to Mattawa, which has a Subway but no Tim's.
The massage parlour is in Mattawa - just go straight through the lights instead of turning left, third house on the right after the used car place. Ask for Rosie or Knut.
When you get to North Bay, you think you are nearly there, but you are not. Follow the directions on the Sudbury web site once you get there or you'll end up in Sault Ste Marie. Which is nice, but no festival this weekend. See you in Sudbury.

Ok, I want to be upfront and say that I do own shares of Wendy's (parent company) and Tim Hortons. Now that we have the disclosure out of the way...
http://web.sa.mapquest.com/timhortons/?tempset=routesearch
A website, that lets you plan your trip, and tells you all the Timmy's on the way! BRILLIANT! Sheer, unadulterated BRILLIANCE!!!
For those inquiring minds that need to know, starting from Montreal, ending at Sudbury, with a maximum of 1 kilometre from the route, there are (drum roll please) 44 Tim Hortons.
My god, it's driving Nirvana... |

According to OP, Joel's site needs to be updated. I see nothing in between Ottawa and North Bay. Not a single timbit to be found. |

Also, we like to drive fast. What kind of OPP presence should we expect, and do they generally ignore cars from Quebec because we're better drivers than Ontarians? |

Hold out until the big nick and you can experience fine dining Sudbury style at "Mr Prime Rib." I swear I'm not making this name up... www.mrprimerib.ca
And get your "relaxation" massage at "Mrs Happy Ending." Sorry no website.

There is definately a Timmy's in Deep River. Just before the Dairy Bar which is also worth the stop. |

I have been travelling between Ottawa and Sudbury since 1989. I have it down to a science of gastronomic stops at regular intervals to keep the boredome in check, but you must leave Ottawa hungry.
Your first stop just outside of Ottawa, will be the Antrum Truck Stop, great butter tarts & coffee to go and clean facilities. Next stop, Deep River The Dairy Bar, a grill cheese, reminiscent of the 50' with a choc milk shake to go.
Then on to Mattawa and the Valois, for a quick stop for a slice of homemade pie and view of the river.
Back in the car, watch for Deer and Moose and head to North Bay. Stopping at Tim's in North Bay and Sturgeon Falls. Next stop Sudbury, where there is a Tim's at every corner.
