CCWC Community Races

July 25 2006 at 12:11 PM

Fellow forumites,

The Club Crew World Championships are being held August 9-13 in Toronto on the newly constructed Western Beaches Watercourse, located adjacent to Marilyn Bell Park. With 150 teams from 15 countries, this looks to be the largest dragonboat extravaganza held in North America.

Prior to the CCWC, 2 races are being held for community teams, a 200m race on Wednesday, August 9th from 6PM-10PM; and 500m race on Friday, August 11th from 8PM-11PM. Each distance will have a maximum of 30 teams entered, and all registered teams are guaranteed:
* 3 races
* medals for top three finishers in all six finals (A to E division)
* 3 free one hour practices at Sunnyside in the SRS boats to be used at the CCWC (a $200 value)
* 2006 CCWC official souvenir bracelet
* advanced opportunity to purchase tickets to the CCWC Celebration Party.

All races will take place on the new racecourse and take place under the stars, and floodlights (a first of it's kind for dragonboating in Canada!)

For more information email Joel at joel.symons@nationaldragonboat.com, or call 416-533-0678 and leave a detailed message.

apologies, forgot the price

July 25 2006, 1:02 PM

And now for a Ron Popeil ploy to announce the cost... for all you Gen Xers out there.

How much would you expect to pay for this, a priceless once in a lifetime experience?

Well, it's not $1000
Not $900
Not $800

Not $750, or $700, or even $600

All this is yours for only $500!

Is that for both distances or each distance?

Re: CCWC Community Races

July 25 2006, 1:31 PM

I got the email and it is for each. So $1000 for both. They'd do better if there was a discount for teams that went for both. Has anyone signed up for this? Most of the crews that can go have people already paddling in the CCWC so it will be tough to get many crews.

Re: CCWC Community Races

July 25 2006, 2:00 PM

Kind of short notice. Considering most teams have spent their budget, it will be tough to find $1K for only 2 races. Our team wants to do it, but its much too pricey.

Re: CCWC Community Races

July 25 2006, 2:04 PM

It'll cost $500 / 20 = $25 per person.

That's similar to the price of parking. That's not pricy.

clarification

July 25 2006, 2:47 PM

It's $500 for the 200 metre race on Aug. 9, which gets you everything that I mentioned in the first post, including 3 practices at Sunnyside (about $65 each, so $200 value).

It's $500 for the 500 metre race on Aug. 11, which gets you everything that I mentioned in the first post, including 3 practices at Sunnyside (about $65 each, so $200 value).

So $1000 gets you 3x200m races on Aug. 9, 3x500m races on Aug. 11, and 6 free practices, plus all that other good stuff.

Most one day regattas give you 3 races in the day, and not many (if any) cost less than $500, and give 3 free practices.

Cajun Linguini.

July 25 2006, 3:37 PM

Hey Joel, just to clarify... on the site it indicates that both races start at 8pm. So is the 200m at 6pm or 8pm? Thanks.

No dumb questions...

July 25 2006, 3:41 PM

...just dumb people. Like me.

Here's one: where do we park?

I may have missed this one, but I haven't seen anything in the literature for the Club Crews, or the attached community regatta, where we're expected to park.

Ontario Place?

The CNE?

Dumbass

Parking - Found it

July 25 2006, 3:46 PM

Yep, Ontario Place and the CNE, and whatever prices they can get away with.

"Parking
Parking for private vehicles is located within a two kilometer radius of the watercourse. The closest
locations include Ontario Place and the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition Grounds (close to the
Dufferin Gates). Costs and availability are set by the private operators of the parking lots."

I like the new course, but I always suspected parking would be a problem.

"Kind of short notice. Considering most teams have spent their budget, it will be tough to find $1K for only 2 races. Our team wants to do it, but its much too pricey"

Actually it is a pretty good deal for SIX RACES. You of course don't have to do both. Your team could do just one of the events, and it would be $500 for three races. Maybe your team shouldn't leave you in charge of such decisions, as your reading comprehension is a little low, as is your concept of value for money.

I wonder how many teams have registered (Joel?) as I know first call went out on this over a month ago. Are you guys having troube filling the 60 slots.

Sorry, I read incorrectly, I thought it was just a 200 m and 500 m. My bad. This is a good deal, My team is investigating whether or not we can participate.

July 27 2006, 5:06 PM

Early this week I believe there were a dozen teams in the 500m race, not sure about the 200m. I hope the hype is building and a few more have signed up. Get a team together, combine with another team!

To eat my own words and redeem myself, we entered a team. Great deal, get to paddle on the world's stage, just not in the world's. Yes, we are not a good team, but what the hell, it'll be fun!

Well, the registration is up around 19 teams now. Thanks to all those who have talked this up. The competition is looking decent for a 30 boat race.

I was trying to see if the list of team names was on www.2006ccwc.com, but the site seems to be going thru updates right now. Stay tuned.

A couple of spots are still open for the 500M, the 200M did not attract, heard they would cancel if they had less than 10 teams.

If teams are registering for the $200, how about a combo price for both events? BTW, what teams have entered? I'm guessing many top tier 'B' teams and 'A' teams that didn't make the cut/want to pay the price of the big event.

200m and practices

August 3 2006, 1:30 PM

Hello all,

yes, the 200m is not going to happen due to low enrollment.

The practices Tuesday, August 8 and Thursday, August 10 are at the new site, Marilyn Bell Park, which is basically south of the CNE grounds.

I am working on re-establishing practices for Wednesday, August 9. If it happens, practice will be at the Marilyn Bell site as well.

thanks all.

It was dark and results were not posted anywhere so this is from memory for A to C. Need some help in B.

A Final results:
1. New College - by a foot or two. Shogon was catching super strong (you could really tell from the boat light on Shogon, another 3 metres and they had it.)
2. Shogun
3. Jetstart
4. C. of Nos/Hydrophobic
5. Castek Chaos

B Final results:
1. FSN/Riptide
2. Mojos Reloaded or Smoke on the Water for 2nd and 3rd
3.
4. Offshore Dragunz
5. Banana Boat/Mofos

C Final results:
1. The Blades
2. Strok'ing Sea Monkeys
3. CIBC
4. Paddlers Anonymous
5. Sinai Lightning

D Final results:
I think it was the Crusaders or Catch 22. Started with a C.

I would agree with the previous poster. I wouldn't call it stacking. Many teams were scrambling for paddlers to fill rosters. And usually the most dedicated paddlers would forego a beautiful Friday summer night to paddle.

Positives:
- All races within 3 hrs, some teams finished in 2 hours. No waiting.
- All the stuff from CCWC (tents, TVs, athletes village, grand stand, food)
- Medals for all.
- I loved the boat lights!!!!
- Officials and volunteer staff did an amazing job!

Negatives:
- too dark on the race course, teams can get away with a lot

I would definitely do a night festival again and congrats to New Dragonz.

This was a well run race with some relatively strong teams present (considering it was setup on such sort notice). As far as I'm aware, there were no hitches. The final race at 11 or so was fun to watch, and at times, all you could see were the lights at the front of the boats exchanging leads. Congratulations to New Dragons, Shogun and Jetstart for putting up some good competition.

Great job

What a blast! Friday night was a memorable experience. I'd like to see Friday's race times posted. Joel can you get us those times?

Despite all the naysayers, both the course and the SRS boats were great. Times were fast even after the wind died. SRS seems to have turned a corner with their boats. Congrats to them. They deserve our support.

I can't wait to race that course again. This is a great new facility for our community. There should be at least two major DB events hosted there every year. Let's hope politics and turf wars don't keep us from taking full advantage.

hear hear

naysayers aside the course was terrific even if a little short - and overall the event was organized and ran very well... kudos to everyone involved for a professional event that went like clockwork

Seat #5

SRS Sidenote

August 14 2006, 3:48 PM

These are by far the nicest SRS boats we've ever used. Lots of glide.

SRS, if anyone is listening, 2 small things to improve on for the next batch:

1. Get rid of the sandpapery stuff on the outside of the gunwales
2. Seat #5 is a little creaky on a couple of the boats

PS. love the foot-rests!

It wasn't just seat 5 that was creaky.

You actually liked the footrests? While the angle of them was great, they were extremely slippery. Our team had to sex wax the stupid things before every race.

As a BUK-phile I was actually very impressed with the SRS boats. They sat nicely in the water, and had a great glide to them.

yes the creaky seats made me a little nervous and the slippery footrests were a little annoying, aside from that no complaints.

Great Job!

August 14 2006, 4:31 PM

Great weekend of racing and a job well done by the organizers. Hope the idea of a night race catches on as it was a very unique experience that I would not mind doing again. Loved the good times this weekend. Ladies in pink: thank you for the great reception/party Saturday night in the "VIP tent". The big post race Club Crew bash and dinner on Sunday was a blast but pulling the plug at 11pm when the dance floor was happening was pathetic and showed the world that Hogtown is still a Hicktown. How embarassing.

P.S.: Get back to work Mark!

Creaky seats! I loved the new SRS boats. Great glide and I like the foot rest.

Before complaining about the boats I think we all need to consider the abuse these boats take. If for example if we were to look at the beating these boats took just this last weekend at the CCWC. Assume the people sitting in seat five weighed 150 lbs each (300 lbs total for the seat). Sorry ladies this is meant to be an average that includes the men as well. With 182 races times 300 lbs we are talking about 54,600 lbs of “angry paddle ass” on seat five alone!

With that much ass I would be creaky too…

Great Job Karen and Kevin – keep up the great work.

thanks all

I appreciate all the kudos, and constructive criticism, and will definitely pass them along to the folks that helped make this event. There were several groups responsible for this: orgainizers/planners, course crew, lifeguards, officials.

If anyone has feedback that is more appropriate in an email rather than this forum, then please send to joel.symons@nationaldragonboat.com

Thanks!

^^^ Joel is not the person to contact, he only schedules the free practices at Sunnyside that comes with the $500 you paid for the races. You need to talk to one of the following:

Bob Bubba: racedivision@2006ccwc.com
Johnson Chang: info@2006ccwc.com

If email is not fast enough for you, then call their office at 416.364.0046.
