Semis are a little unfair

August 1 2006, 8:58 AM

I'd like to point this out before a single race is run. Some of the semi-final setups are a little unfair. For example, take race 75 on Friday. The seeds racing in the third of three semi-finals are;

- 1 x Worst from the repechage
- 2 x 1st in repechage
- 2 x First heat winner

Compare that to the other repechages

- 1 x 3rd place in repechage
- 1 x 2nd place in repechage
- 2 x 2nd place in first heat
- 1 x First heat winner

Having two first heat winners implies that these are some of the fastest crews already. Throwing in two of the best (2 repechage winnes) from the rest is not fair when compared to the other two semi-finals where its one winner plus a bunch of 2nd and 3rd place finishers.

Wither Czechs and South Africa?

August 1 2006, 11:08 AM

Always sucks to see teams drop out just a few weeks from the date of competition.

Casualties noticed so far:

South Africa - Junior entries
Czech Replublic - all of them
Vladivostok - Russia
Ural - Russia

More?

Let's hope the bleeding stops there.

Bleeding, such an interesting term - the South Africans looked at it a little differently in 2004 when almost all of the Canadian Qualifiers decided not to attend - I think it was, It's great that everyone wants to come and we completely understand if sometimes it just doesn't work out.

As for Toronto, I understand they have a very high level of participation for a Worlds, Someone mentioned almost 2,000 paddlers, I don't think the IDBF has ever seen that many paddlers at any of its events.

As for the progressions, I find it it cute that your forum even critisizes the IDBF.

"the South Africans looked at it a little differently in 2004 when almost all of the Canadian Qualifiers decided not to attend - I think it was, It's great that everyone wants to come and we completely understand if sometimes it just doesn't work out."

Canada had a HUGE turnout in South Africa. Original qualifiers or not, we sent 8 crews to Cape Town whereas they are sending...none to Toronto. Thanks for the support, guys. (while we're at it, HUGE props to Australia for sending so many crews to the Northern hemisphere.) Nothing against the South Africans them, they were nice people. But the lack of support for the Canadian version of the Club Crews after our teams spent big bucks going to Rome and South Africa is disappointing.

"As for Toronto, I understand they have a very high level of participation for a Worlds, Someone mentioned almost 2,000 paddlers, I don't think the IDBF has ever seen that many paddlers at any of its events."

Rome was similarly well attended, but that was continental Europe. Driving distance for many teams, or at the least a much cheaper flight.

"As for the progressions, I find it it cute that your forum even critisizes the IDBF."

Get something straight, that was ONE person, not the whole forum who criticised the race progression. Besides, the IDBF is far from exempt from criticism. Ask me sometimes about how they continued to list a crew in heat after heat when they never even left their home country...

Doesn't seem that much. That's only about 100 teams. Should still be something to see given the quality.

I understand they brought in enough boats to cover the 2 K races???

After Pickering I wonder how many boats will get trashed in the 2K Demolition Derby!!!

At risk of sounding a bit harsh, who cares? Just get in there and paddle as fast as you can.

Semis are often unfair. How often have you come third in a semi, and made the B final, when your time would have won a different semi?

Just do it.
