How Did We Do?August 15 2006 at 6:31 AM | Orst |
| - I was away and unable to attend but am curious as to how things came together. Were there big crowds? Did things run smoothly? How was the transportation, parking, food, etc.
I know that there were lots of politics going into this but from the threads so far that I've read, this appeared to be a well run event? Was it? |

Of the 5 Worlds I've attended, this was by far the best - on every front, as for the out of country teams, all they did was praise Canada all weekend - from busine right through to the closing ceremonies. |

Toronto rocks.
The best and biggest city in Canada one would not expect anything else. I love the city so much I'm thinking of having our mixed team move from Quebec to Toronto. |

It was an event for the paddlers, everyone loved it, as for crowds, impressive, I'm sure the weather played a big role in attendance. We were proud to be from Toronto! |

Things seemed to be run well, busses were good, races relatively on time, good layout of tents. Weather certainly helped (rain would have been a disaster). I think the only disapointment was that after hearing about how much this thing cost, I was expecting something a little more permanent. It would have been nice to see a little investment into the docks (just luck no one was injured on them). I guess the problem with spending millions of dollars on a pile of rocks is that at the end of the day, it looks like a pile of rocks. I suspect the real benafactors from this will be the Toronto yachting community as it doesn't look like the city will be left with a permanent world class DB facility (like you see as left overs fom other sporting events).
When Dartmouth hosted the ICF worlds, they ended up with high tech starting gates, a set of docks that surrounded one end of the lake (after the event the connecting docks were removed, but the local clubs kept the ones in front of their clubs and are still using them)

This was once again a five star event showing why Toronto is the good and the best city in Canada.
I believe we showed the short sightedness of the OIC in selecting Toronto for the 2008 bid.
Toronto showed why it's the Meca of flat water paddling in Canada with MCC, Balmy Beach and Pickering to name a few. This CCWC was the just reward for Toronto's years of growing the sport......

I am coming back to run as Mayor of Toronto.
I pledge to Bring the summer Olympics to Toronto
Winning the games will benefit our City, our Province and our Country.
The legacy of the games will be new infrastructure, housing, recreation facilities, cultural development, environmental improvements and improved transit.
Transform our waterfront into the greatest waterfront anywhere
Working with the Prime Minister and the Premier we have taken the first step with a $1.5 billion investment.
Toronto will get a waterfront that is green, clean and accessible to the public. Toronto will also get a waterfront that is on budget and accountable to the taxpayer !
Keep Toronto clean, friendly and fun for residents
Festivals: Toronto is a great place to be
to add to the already great calendar of events including the beaches jazz festival, Gay Pride Parade, The Downtown Jazz Festival, the Taste of the Danforth, Chin Picnic, Portuguese Concerts, Caribana.
Project Respect I want everyone to think more about how we treat each other. It's about courtesy to a senior or a pregnant lady, giving up a seat on the subway. It's about helping people in need. Giving something back to the community. Maybe picking up some trash and putting it in the recycler.
Build great services and maintain great service
City hall is in the service business. Citizens deserve the best. All the time.
City council worked hard to harmonize service levels from 6 former cities - while still protecting the taxpayer.
We are putting more into keeping the streets clean - and we will keep working on it. And we will back it up with our garbage hotline whenever there is a problem - just call and the city will be there.
Create a new funding partnership with the provincial and federal governments
The Federal and Provincial Governments have dumped $900 million in costs on the city of Toronto in the last three years.
This year the Federal and Provincial Governments will grab from the citizens of Toronto $3.8 billion more than they will spend in Toronto.
I am determined to stop the dumping on Toronto and "lead the campaign" for charter status.
Make Toronto a magnet for jobs
Jobs Quarterback: the Mayor needs to be the Jobs Quarterback for Toronto - seeking out great companies to locate great jobs in Toronto and expanding employment at the great companies we have.
I will work with the economic development committee - and leaders in the business community to identify the best companies with the best jobs for the best city in the world. |

Mel was Toronto's greatest cheerleader. He really seemed to love and care for the city, not just his own political career. Unfortunately he was a bit of a loon, and suffered from foot-in-mouth disease like no other politician I can think of except Dubya (but Mel was/is way more loveable).
Mel also got sh!t done, unlike some other Toronto mayors I can think of... |

Mel Lastman was a clown. What has he done for the city of Toronto? Besides naming a square after himself? |

Youth World Day 2002 and Sheppard Subway line, the line that goes nowhere, but is in North York...
