Slayers, Telus, BMO should easily make Final A.
Telus should easily win it ending the season a high note

I haven't seen them paddle but I wouldn't rule out Gorging in the mix. They did very well at Alcan, (losing only to False Creek) and lost a tight one (about .5 sec) to Kai Kaika in Victoria (Rumour has it that Kai had 3 of the strongest False creek men onboard for that festival) |

The only major festival where the Beasts were a full participant was Ottawa, where they came a close second to the Senior National Program.
Very fast team.
I say it's between them and Gorging. Telus is good, but I don't know if they're up to that level...yet. |

They are terrible. As was seen in the July festival, anyone in lane 1 won their heat on the Sunday, regardless of how good they were. |

She's right that complaining endlessly isn't doing any good, but when someone says something like "and it's simply not true. Teams won from every lane at the July festival." then they simply have to be corrected.
Look at then results of the entire Mixed Premiere Division in Montreal in July.

Wind and the empty lane 0. Qc cup guys are working towards using lane 0 and keeping 6 empty.
The same phenomenon happened at CCWCs when lane 5 was coming on in the finals. They were totally sheltered from the wind.
in tight race courses whoever has an outside lane will usually have an advange as they are getting undesturbed water. |
|
Q
| Re: Quebec Cup Predictions | August 31 2006, 11:06 AM |
The wind poster got it right. The stands to the North and the embankment on the South are big enough to provide shelter or to channel wind. Lane 1 can be a dog under the right conditions.
2005 results:
A div: Lane 1 6th, lane 3 winner
B div: Lane 1 winner
C div: Lane 1 6th, lane 3 winner
D div: Lane 1 6th, lane 4 winner
E div: Lane 1 5th, lane 3 winner
F div: Lane 1 6th, lane 5 winner
G div: Lane 1 4th, lane 4 winner
Even lane 6 is not impossible to win from, just hard, which you should expect from the 6th seeded team in a heat. There's nothing on the basin to compare with Lane 5 (or 4 in 2005 - dry year?) at GWN.
Too many teams let the worship of the lane gods get in their heads and crumble when they get a 'bad' lane. It doesn't take much - two benches that suddenly believe they are doomed and you're cooked. |

| Re: Quebec Cup Predictions | September 9 2006, 3:31 PM |
Gorging will more than likely place in the Top 3 . They are a very very strong team and some of their guys paddle with FCRCC ( remember them ? ).
At the 2004 world club crews they were 3rd in Premier mixed so I'm sure you will have your hands full with them so its not really that insulting but will be when you again lose to a western team again ,just kidding ..ok maybe not !
Good Luck Gorging !! |

I'm not going to try and predict the Quebec Cup results since I haven't seen very many eastern teams paddle, but based on what I have seen, Gorging will be very competitive. |

This is a throw-down, a show-down
hell no, I can't slow down
It's gonna go
This race is amplified, so just glide, and let your backbone slide
you listen to every word I say
I every verb you heard I play snaps your vertabre
you try to cover, a hover me, a roast, a fake, a flag, then I run a post
toast, I'm the most
d-e-f's how it goes
no x's or o's or tic-tac-toes
22D knows, this ain't a game, I'm on a mission
call me a hip-hop, tip-tac-tition
I paddle just like a slab of clay that's shapeless
I know glass is tasteless
I unviverse without light is lightless
that's why I always take time to right this
I mold it in my hands before I start chiselin
could be a rain, a brainstorm, or drizzlin
sun could be shining, sun could be showerin
prabtismic's verb, and I'm powerin, flowerin
my lyrics are awesome
tunin' from human, bloomin' a blossom
blowing away blockades and barracades
make ya black and blue from the blast and the blaze
it's a bloodsport, bloods builds up back
I make your vision go blue while your brain goes black into oblivion
beats from box to box to bates
rocks from blocks and blocks
let your backbone slide
just let it slide, y'all I don't give a damn
if ya backbone quiver
man oh man, why'd ya swiver
wind some twine your spine while your slither
it's contagious, an epidemic
you try to lift, you're cool, but it feel again
or a scholar, sold like a
but like I said before, I'm not American
it's who you are, not the way you went
we all originate from the same descent
I make alot of cents/sense, and pence
gold (gold), murr and frankencense
when I'm in France they blow me francs
frank, with your swiss account is the way I bank-pank
at home, I make bills a brown from my sound
in the states green like the grass in the ground
when I'm in England, they pass me pounds now
I collect cash in every town, so I slide (slide)
but nowadays, I'm trapped
(why's that?)
so many suckers on my sac-ro-illeac
it's like a rap-sack, backpack
(wic-wic-whack)
give me some slack jack
rap is like a jungle
where rhyme for rhyme is like a vine to vine
swung line to line of mine
I'm collossal, you'se a mosquito
I'ma play Tarzan, you play Cheetah
cheeta, biter, love to forge
better yet, I'll call you Kurious George
cause curiosty cold killed the cat
can't hide so blind to the side
let your backbone slide
Verse Three:
the keyword is synchronism
yo, check out my homeboy paddle to the rythym
and hey, this hey, oh, this hey
I'm coming double-f
fortissamo, f-f for funkey fresh
my DJ is LTD, mellow-flex
you listen to the poetry
vocabularly golden, beats from my rollin
stone cold lyrics from the microphone I'm holdin
words I rip, egos I strip
I make sucker cruise kick, kick band I flick
I get busy, they're dizzy, they start to collide
they should've stepped of, I let it slide
but now they got brasen, dry like a raisin
I glaze like a vase, I smash you like daze
until they realize, they shouldn't have ripped
cause they deny y'all, not be told
this is a throwdown, I'm conducting it
it's like a highrise, I'm constructing it
was once thoughts, pen, and paper
now it's a tower, a soul, a skyscraper
it's getting out of hand after I aided a monster
my musical mono-louge makes you wanna
move with the maestro
you feel high so a set, the blend, a presendo is nice yo
I'm the guy, the rhythm is a ride
to the fresh side, let your backbone slide

Montreal DBC Women Developmental
3R dragon Women Team

I'll leave my mixed picks as is for now. Gorging is more than welcome to prove my off the cuff predictions wrong. I'll be the first to admit my predictions were guesses since I've never seen them race before. However, I've heard this same type of talk before about Pacific Reach coming out to MIDBRF leave all the teams in their dust. |

Pacific Reach did not bring their full A crew and was a mix of both the A & B crews as only those that could afford it went so not realy a fair comparision .Gorging will be the crew that raced in Alcan |

Soothsayer
| According to my crystal ball... | September 18 2006, 10:35 PM |
I'm here to stop the madness.
1. Beasts - It's true that the west is much better than many in the east give them credit for. But they can't beat the truly uber elite from the east. This is one of those crews that give Quebec/Ontario paddlers that false sense of security.
2. Gorging - Will always be second and it will be sorta close. But its those "sortas" that they know deep down inside they could never make up the difference no matter how many times they race.
3. Wong's - They are the 2nd best team in Quebec now but easily have the best experience. That matters more here.
4. Telus - the fastest team iin Quebec but a little too inexperienced. They are too high on themselves right now to succeed.
5. 3r Dragons - vastly underrated. They don't self-promote unlike most of the other teams (ahem 4)
6. Verdun - experience. Nuff said. |
|
I SEE ALL.
| MY TAKE | September 18 2006, 10:53 PM |
1. Beasts - no contest
2. Telus - They are hungry and are seeking a big kill
3. Gorging - Will be strong but will be jetlagged
4. Slayers - Killer crew, will surprise in a few races
5. 3R - they represented well at MIDBRF, will do so again
Wild Cards:
BMO - messed up a ton of teams in TO.

How can you justify saying that BMO stacked their boat?? Just because they did really well against some ontario teams that are on the decline does not mean they stacked their boat!!! They will have the same paddlers at the Quebec Cup as they did in Great White North and will do just as good if not better. |

Hum dude do you have any idea that you probbaly said the stupidest thing ever ?
There's no way in hell that BMO will have the same pple as they did at GWN..... simply because they had 3 TELUS paddlers with them.
Now go back to your room and write 150 times.... I promise not to say stupid things without verifying how stupid they are and making sure no one will notice that they are stupid.
BMO shouldn't be in the "a" final at Quebec Cup but in the "b" division considering the presence of both Gorging Dragons and Dragons Beasts. Nevertheless, expect a strong showing for the BMO crew as they are coming all hyped up with their very good performance at GWN
A final : Dragon Beasts
Slayers
Telus
Verdun Adrenaline
and probably somewhere in there Gorging Dragons (sorry don'T know much about them)
B Final : 3r
BMO
Hyperactifs
Verdun Express
RBC comets
Women : is it really necessary ??
Men : Whoever though that LGMDM (les gros mongols) will beat the Men DBC is on some pretty high stuff
Men DBC
3R
Les gros mongols
and the rest...

For the poster looking for the results on Gorging in 2006. They won the 250 super sprints in the spring, were 2nd to False Creek at Alcan, won the Nanaimo festival and were second in Victoria Festival by 6/10 sec to a team that had 3 of the strongest men from False Creek onboard. I paddle out of the same club as Gorging and they are definately a strong team. No real point in trying to compare them to eastern teams though since the east hasn't seen the west and the west hasn't seen the east. Until they go head to head its all speculation. Of course if I was to speculate, (LOL) I would say they will be right there with the top teams. |

...last year 3 Ontario crews showed up (G&G, Hammerheads & Piranhas)....4 if you count Bytown. If memory serves me, they spanked most teams to various degrees with only Wong's and Verdun able to keep up (and do well of course). I remember seeing complaints on this forum over how the "supercrews" shouldn't be racing in the Quebec Cup.
Perhaps they didn't come because they thought GWN was going to be the better race? Who knew the Beasts and Gorging were going to come to Quebec? Heck, Gorging only came because the nationals were cancelled.
BTW, I'm kidding (partially) |

It's kind of funny how paddleboy has become Gorging's biggest fan all of a sudden
Yes Gorging is a very good team, but not at the level of the dragonbeasts. They were second at Alcan to FCRCC by 8 seats - a pretty big gap at this level. A little more concerning would be the recent loss to Kai on home water (even with the 3 False Creek guys). Would have expected Gorging to take that one. They should be good enough to fight for some hardware, but not likely the gold. Watch out for the canoe club kids from Cap...

| Re: Quebec Cup Predictions | September 19 2006, 5:32 PM |
Just some food for thought. At the CCWC, were there ANY Canadian teams that were able to consistently stay within 8 seats of False Creek? I had a quick look at the results and it looks like they were at least that far ahead of ALL the Canadian teams that were there, including Mayfair and G&G. Does that mean they're all slow teams as well, especially since you add that "8 seats is a big margin at this level" I've got no idea what Gorging will look like out here since I've never seen them paddle, but I would be pretty satisfied to lose by ONLY 8 seats to False Creek!! |

False creek was jacked with their race off crew. Essentially the best the west had to offer. Doubt very much they were the same as the crew that raced alcan. |

"A little more concerning would be the recent loss to Kai on home water (even with the 3 False Creek guys). Would have expected Gorging to take that one."
Never underestimate the strength of a few very strong male paddlers. Case in point. The recent Kelowna Festival. One team picked up several of the False Creek male paddlers and transformed from a team that was about 80th at Alcan to finishing in the top 10 in Kelowna. Granted the kelowna field wasn't anywhere near the depth and size of Alcan but that is a HUGE jump for them just by adding a few strong men. |

MONTREALER
| AYOYE ! ! ! | September 23 2006, 8:12 PM |
Actually the fastest team (and consistent) was the Dragon Beasts with all races clocked at 2:04 something
Gorging was second all day long and ....well they finished second in the "A" Final
I was surprised by 3R taking 3rd place. They are strong, consistent, hungry (see paragrapsh on men) and ... well they are up there
Slayers took a little bump to fourth place. Kinda expected me to be after Dragon Beasts, but after watching Gorging thought why would take 3rd... not fourth !
BMO came in 5th. Consistent time of 2'06 xcept in the final where they slowed down like hyperactifs. They are ending their dragon boat season on a strong note. Let's wish them good luck on the 250m.
Hyperactifs came in 6th. What the F?% happened. Was a "b" division contender. The fact that the 3best teams in each heat of the semis was moving to the "a" helped them, as Verdun had a better semi time.
TELUS, VERDUN (Adrenaline)................ What the blue blazing hell happened to them ? I guess they will want revenge on the 250m
Men's ...................................... OMG 3R beat DBC by a mere 0.12 secs on the 500 m final. 3R men were jumping up and down with that victory whereas the Men's DBC definetively were not happy. Was one hell of a race between those two teams. Seems like we have all the ingredients for a good rivalry between those two teams.... I could say three teams, if we had the LCGDM (les gros mongols de montreal) .
The 250m races will be damn good to watch especially since Dragon Beasts and Gorging Dragons will mix their mens to compete in both 250m and 2km ! |

250 women (and 2km) Mtl Elite, developmental and Gorging Beast
250 m men : Gorging Beast, Mtl Elite, 3R

It's the first time I had the opportunity to race against both Gorging Dragons (GD) and Dragon Boat East (BEAST)
All I can say is that they are very good, especially Beast and they can come back to MTL whenever they want as they will be welcomed with open arms. Our team's tent was close by theirs. They are full of sportsmanship (unlike other teams on this Forum) and could show quite a few things about sportsmanship. They are a nice bunch of pple , competitive, win fair and play hard.
Good showing for the both of you and believe me... you're welcome to come back whenever you want

Alright everyone, give some love to the teams who competed this weekend.
Firstly, alot of us underestimated BMO who eneded up winning the Quebec Cup and raced strong in the 250's. They showed that their placing at the GWN festival was not a fluke.
Secondly, the teams from BC and Halifax travelled a long way and showed great sportsmanship to everyone around. World class teams and I would paddle against them any day. To be strong, you have to go against the best.
Lastly, I was very impressed by the sportsmanship of everyone at the finish line for the 250 A final who cheered the boats on.
Big up to everyone. |

Geez, a lot of you Montreal paddlers are such kids and I'm embarrased to be represented by you. It's come to a point where all Montreal teams trash each other. Where's the love people???
If anything, it's great that teams from out East and West came and woke us up. They put us in our place, and it shut many of our mouths up. Thanks to Dragon Beasts and Gorging Dragons for coming to Montreal and giving us a really good run for our money. It goes to show that there are stong dragon boat communities throughout the rest of Canada. More importantly, it'll now make us train harder knowing what we're up against. It was a pleasure to have you paddle with us this weekend! You guys are a class act and a valuable example that we can all learn from. |

| What's Up | September 25 2006, 8:44 PM |
These Beasts (and Gorgin too from what I understand) seem to be changing dragon boat. I mean, here we have a major festival and not one word about lane bias, or arguments about rules, tactics, wash riding, etc. The Beasts just show up, usually win (by my count they have lost one race this year, heats, semis, etc included in Tampa, Ottawa and Montreal, don't complain, respect their competitors, don't make excuses, and - miracle of miracles - we have this positive thread on the post. Good job everyone who raced Quebec Cup. My team didn't make the A or B final, but I loved it and the Beasts are my favorite team in dragonboat - cool uniforms, uber paddles, and they just look different paddling than everyone else.
The Beasts are what dragon boat should be about. I was going to quit dbing after this year, but I heard they are coming back to QC next year and I'm going to keep dbing cause I want to race them next year.
Thanks guys. |

Some QC cup and end of season thoughts: firstly congrats to BMO for an emphatic finish. It was nice to see them prove their naysayers wrong, particularly since some clowns saw fit to drag us into it while trashing them over GWN.
Beasts were dominant and Gorging were full value for money. Great competitors and good sports all, you can never get enough of them. Nice people to share a beer with too (I'm the duck guy in case any GD read this site). Hope to see you guys again sometime and maybe we can make the trip ourselves (in either direction). Any word on the results of the shuffle board showdown on Sunday night?
We'll likely take some deserved ribbing over our weekend meltdown. No excuses really, we were exactly the same crew as Sherbrooke, but faded somewhere along the way. Or others got better. Winning, even if only the local bragging rights that were realistically in play this weekend, isn't anywhere as easy as some on this forum would make it out.
We had a great time racing in Montreal this year (time is already blurring memories of the Outer Hebrides summer). The gaps between crews collapsed and on any Saturday morning it felt like anybody could win - us, Slayers, BMO, 3R, or Verdun (vastly underrated by the online incognoscenti). Despite the fierce competition the after parties were pretty much all high fives, chest bumps, and toasts - and that was just the ladies - the guys got really emotional. Hopefully we'll get more of the same next year, with everyone stepping it up to give any distinguished visitors more of a challenge.
Have a good winter people.

Just a few thoughts. I'm speaking for myself and I think for most of the team when I say thank you Montreal paddlers for a great weekend. There was a number of strong teams out there and you made us work hard for what we accomplished.
A tip of the hat to Dragonbeast. Well done! Hopefully we'll get a chance again to paddle against you or with you sometime in the future.
We felt welcome at your festival. You made us feel very comfortable. Whether it was a positive comment from a team or from the individuals who came up to us, thanking us for making the trip.
Thanks Matt for the use of a tent for the weekend. It was a godsend. I think I say for all the paddlers, that was some nasty wind and rain at times. It was nice to see the sun on Sunday.
What a beautiful city you have. We only got a chance to see a little of it and it is breathtaking.
And speaking of beautiful, Montreal ladies....thank you!! Is it something in the water, I don't know.
I could go on and on, but this sorry ass has to go and take a long, hot bath and soak and savor all the great moments of the weekend.
Hopefully we see some of you eastcoasters come out for some of our festivals. Your welcome anytime. And hey, all I saw was good sportsmanship all weekend.

that was more a result of the winds. It was more sheltered and therefore had less of a tailwind. Also, lower seeded teams. |

| You got to be kidding me | September 27 2006, 2:54 PM |
Lane bias is when the results are abnormally changed by unfair or dissimilar conditions, such as depth. Yes, the outside lanes at the basin are semi sheltered, but sometimes that helps you in lane 1 or 6, and sometimes it hurts. It's literally which way is the wind blowing, and that's not unfair lanes, that's luck of the draw in an outdoor sport. Plus, the slowest qualifiers get the outside lanes.
Somehow, the Beasts managed to paddle right down the center of the course, in lane 3, for two days, and win every heat, semi and final. Those guys must be killing themselves with laughter reading this.
Let's raise the level of our sport. There wasn't lane bias. Just get out and race.

I don't think they really care about what is written here. Their time is better spent paddling than sitting on this forum laughing at lane bias discussions. They came and they impressed. Standing on the sidelines Saturday watching a race, one of them just struck up a converstation with me. Extremely friendly, approachable with no perceived attitude and easy to talk to. Not much complaining to be done, I suppose. Dragon Beasts and Gorging Dragons were awesome! BMO held their own and won the Quebec Cup by being the most consistent team of the weekend in all 3 race formats. It'll be interesting to see if thay can keep it up for next year or if they will once again be overtaken by once-considered powerhouses of Montreal - Wongs, Verdun & Telus. This is not a knock against BMO - they deserve their due! | |
