True Rankings - Quebec CupSeptember 30 2006 at 9:39 PM | Power Demon |

Hello all.
The results from the Quebec Cup have been added to the True Rankings:
http://www.dragonboat-truerank.blogspot.com/
For those interested, Gorging would have placed just under the Imperial Dragons at spot #13. However, they don't qualify to be added as per the rules (out of area team that did not race in a true rankings festival last year, or two festivals this year)
I will try to get around to looking at some of the smaller festivals I missed as well. I know it is a little late in the season at this point but I'll see what I can do.

Interesting that you would place the Gorging Dragons in 13th place. According to the results at the Quebec Cup their slowest time was 2.07 while their fastest was 2.05. Their only loss in the 500m was to the Beasts by less than a second. I was there and had my ass kicked all weekend by that team. I think anyone that raced against them would agree that they would be rated in the top 5-7 teams if they paddled out here on a regular basis. Anyone that hasn't seen them would be in for a bit of a wake up call!! |

Essentially the Gorging results indicate that their average time was only a little faster than the 3R, Dragonslayers, Telus, Verdun - but they were on average a considerable amount slower than the Beasts. Had they been closer to the Beasts they would have ranked higher. Once again take this was a grain of salt since once again the more true rank races the more accurate ranking.
The Beasts were already pegged as roughly as fast (but a little slower) as the seniors in Ottawa. The expected gap between the top Montreal teams and them closed a little at the Quebec cup so they get pulled back a touch.
I haven't had any new emails since the people who volenteered to help with the rankings. If you did volenteer you should have received an email from me. If you haven't heard let me know and I'll send out another.

Take the rankings with a grain of salt.Who cares what they come up with because it really comes down to head to head on the water .........thats all that counts in reality so don't be offend by stupid rankings |

Indeed, as it has been stated previously, true rankings does not predict the outcomes. Teams should be lumped in a specific range. Anything can happen in a head to head race. Lane bias, wash riding, or good old plain nerves. Of course it does not take into account vigorous training that might take place during the season either. That's why you might see a few teams rise and fall throughout the season. Take golfing as an example. Besides Tiger Woods, you may see a golfer place in a certain range, not necessarily end up in that place. They might be working on certain swings and techniques. After the hit it bang on, they're back up in the rankings. |

Looking at the ranges make sense. If you check teams 13-20 (Big Fish through BMO) most of these teams raced and had different results against each other through the season.
PD - looking at rankings by festival for QC cup, almost all the teams slowed down or stayed the same as I look down the list. Who sped up at that fest to make the other look relatively slow? Or did I misunderstand something? |

I would stay away from adding Stratford due to the extreme lane effect |

adding Stratford would make the rankings less accurate. |

Thanks for keeping a watchful eye on me Q. I guess I kind of rushed that one because I did find two mistakes in what I had posted (forgot to update one formula and pulled the wrong ranking times to compare to). I'm hoping to automate a lot of the processes over the winter which should cut down on human error.
The new results are now up:
http://www.dragonboat-truerank.blogspot.com/
Beasts and BMO improved enough to move the other top Montreal crews down a touch. Gorging would now have finished behind Eat Trout in the top 10.
Once again I do want to look at possibly adding other festivals but I have a lot on my plate. If they are added it will likely be over the winter when no one really cares anymore. Sorry. I'm hoping to have more resources next year and be able to produce results on a timely basis.
