Garmin 205 Question
October 25 2006, 10:43 AM
The 205 is a GPS HRM. In the winter I run/spin/erg inside a lot. While the unit will continue to monitor my HR over the duration of the exercise (and graph it ...... love the graphs!), it will not calculate calories burned. I assume the caloric consumption shown by the 205 must, therefore, be measured using distance traveled. Does anyone know if it can be changed? Is there a rough calculation that could be used to determined calories burned?

Calories burned is the crappiest possible measurement of work.

"Calories burned is the crappiest possible measurement of work."
Really? If some of my off-season goals are weight loss and body masss composition change (decreasing fat as a percentage of total weight), is it the "crappiest possible measure"? I thought caloric deficit will contribute to decreasing fat as a % of weight.
Or maybe you just assumed I was using as a measure of work ......

I'm talking about "calories burned" displayed on all kinds of equipment.
You know, people running on a treadmill with calories used on the display... it's not an accurate measure of calories burned/used.

Calories burned

The good thing about a calories burned display is that it makes you aware of how long it takes you to burn through that row of Oreos you at for breakfast. It's scary.
(and don't you say you haven't done it yourself!)

The new Garmin is too bulky , I use the 301 w/ HRM and it works great and never had any issues . I got it on e-bay for $197 which is a steal . Its not as bulky as the 205/305 and I modifed it to mount on my oc1 so I can see it while training and racing and I use it on the d/b as well .
Its useless wearing it on your wrist because you can't read it unless you stop paddling
