People keep track of flatwater time records, but they are not recognized in any official way. (Although CKC has a list.) They tell you more about wind and water conditions than about paddlers.
(from the holder of a totally meaningless Canadian record in a very insignificant national race - but it's still fun to brag to non-paddlers) |

The sprint times on the ICF website are just the top 10 fastest times and do not presume to be world records. As stated many times before there are too many variables from race to race (heat to heat). As an example Steve Giles could have come home from Sydney with a gold medal instead of a bronze had the wind been a head, tail or from the left since in C-1 a cross wind advantages those who paddle on one side over the other. But that is the nature of the game, to be guaranteed the best you need to not only beat your competitors but Mother Nature too. What is interesting is that Kolonicz and Knazovicky have times in the C-1 200m that still rank given that late 97 was the beginning of the technical revolution in hull design, that made the boats radically faster (yet another variable) |
