3) Mayfair
4) Wongs
5) Scotia Rouge
6) Imps

You can take that to the bank.

Pickering registration is now up, most of the above listed Toronto based teams are going, but no Montreal/Ottawa/Sudbury crews yet. So here goes:

1) G & G - their's to lose, returning champion with (rumour has it) a younger crew
2) CSDC - Will make it close with G&G
3) Mayfair - nipping at heels or should I say tails of their senior brethren
4) Scotia Rouge - 4th through 6th will be a crap shoot, lane positioning etc.
5) Imps - Strong practice turnouts can't put Imps out of the mix
6) Piranhas Beach - 4-6th will be fun to watch. Really 2 races happening here 1st - 3rd and 4th - 6th

7) Hanalei - lots of turnover but home water advantage
8) MOFOS - Braun and now a little technique
9) Collingwood - Will show T.O. that racing north of hwy 7 exists outside of Sudbury
10) RBC - slow fade from the past glory years
11) Hammerheads - rain aside turnover and coaching are an issue
12) Wahoos - CIBC lite? What Enron settlement affecting sponsorship?

1) G & G - If the rumors of a stronger team are true
2) Mayfair - Working hard and a tiny knotch above the Seniors
3) CSDC - It may be hard for them to find room to improve
4) Scotia Rouge - Usual spot
5) Imps - Imps will remain strong
6) Piranhas Beach - They are only going to get better

7) Hammerheads - falling from the ranks of the elite
7) Collingwood - only going to get better
8) Hanalei - weak showing at GWN, can they rebuild?
9) MOFOS - Too early in the season to have getten cardio up to speed
10) RBC - rebuilding

Schedule is now up!

May 22 2007, 10:06 AM

Seems like the Imps were the only team from last years A final to be screwed by lane positioning this year. Looks like Gary has pulled his weight yet again: G & G Senior Panasonic Lane 5 beside Scotia Rouge, G & G Sony Lane 6, G & G Mens Lane 5 sandwiched between PDBC Men and CSDB, the only G & G crew that didn't receive a preferential Lane placement is the defending Rec Champs, G & G Alumni; but I guess with the crew being somewhat stronger then every other Rec crew Lane positioning didn't matter. Nice to see that fairness and transparency in dragonboating has finally arrived!

Hey Scotty why don't you just hand them the trophy's??

Typo

May 24 2007, 7:48 AM

I found out where the misunderstanding is. The line, "All crews in all divisions are randomly seeded for their initial qualifying heat race." should have read:

All favoured crews in all divisions are randomly seeded in lanes 4,5&6 for their initial qualifying race.

Hope that helps.

Yes there triaing. Various destinations. The Alumni are out of PDBC. You will notice they did not get a great lane. Makes you wonder if it was random after all. You would think that if it wasn't the boat Gary actually paddles in would have got a good lane. So those people that have started to bitch about the regatta before it has taken place. STOP MAKING EXCUSES ON WHY YOUR NOT GOING TO WIN! I forgot in dragon boat there's no loosers just bad lanes, poor race oragainzers, crappy boats. Oh and a whole buch of ****ty paddlers that think because they practice a few times a week it entittles them to win every time. Suck it the F$#k up folks!!!

Re: Pickering Perdictions...

Wow! Great predictions.

1) I'd expect BMO to place higher, GWN was not a fluke and rumor has it these guys have worked hard through the off season.

2) Second G&G team that close to the top? I might pick Scotia to take them.

3) TO university teams might rank a little higher and are probably more comperable with ETS if the end of last year was any indication.

4) I have no idea what the Montreal Dragon Boat Club is - so that's a crap shoot?

Other than that, I think these are well educated predictions. Good luck to all crews.

The Montreal DBC team is a throw together of the Montreal Women and Men's teams. They were coming over to kick some ass and would have made it to the top 3 without a doubt. Too bad they bailed at the last minute.

Predictions

May 30 2007, 11:59 AM

I'd put Mayfair ahead of the CSDB team, and maybe, depending on who shows up for G&G, ahead of G&G. Mayfair has had some turnover, but I think they'll be stronger, rather than weaker than last year, when they beat G&G at the world championships.

Wow! Only one prediction of Mayfair getting at least second. It seems like the predictions always underestimate these guys.

A lot will depend on the lanes but I would expect Mayfair to be the faster team than CSDC and definetly Scotia Rouge. They were faster than the seniors last year, and have gotten better - if scouting reports are too be believed.

Interesting

June 1 2007, 3:15 PM

PDBC website now has its rules up. Not sure if its in reaction to another thread here but look at the specialty cup details:

university cup
a. Only students currently enrolled in the school which they are representing, may participate in the University Cup or University Cup qualifying races.
b. University Cup participants MUST provide student photo id during roster checks in order to be eligible to race.

bank cup
a. Eligibility for the Bank Cup consists of a recognized financial institution as the primary sponsoring entity of the crew. All athletes do not have to be employees of the institution to be eligible.

womens cup / breast cancer cup
a. All athletes competing in this competition and qualifying races for this competition must be female.
b. Steerspersons and drummers do not have to be female.

health care professionals cup
a. Eligibility for the Health Care Cup consists of a recognized health care professional organization as the primary sponsoring entity of the crew. All athletes do not have to be employees of the institution to be eligible.

So overall, it looks like University and Women are being policed. In particular, it specifically states that for the first race, university teams have to race their University-legit lineups.

I called it, WRCC A came in 6th, beat out teams with much bigger paddlers who have paddled together for way longer. Like Imps, Collingwood, Hanalei etc..
Let's go Rouge.
And the boat had 8 juniors who are going to Australia this year for worlds in it.

Fun day

June 6 2007, 12:27 AM

The only team that refused to rerace was Mac's. 2 other teams (3&4) were DQed.
G&G was ahead , was interfered with when lane 4 entered their lane and they lost ground avoiding colision ,droped to 2nd, finshed second.
Interference obviously may have affected results.
Protest filled , judges decided to run rerace after DQing 3 & 4 , who collided.
Mac declined to race ( afraid of getting beat ? ), made BIG production of coming over to G&G area (why ?) to anounce his intention not to rerace.
That left 2 teams to rerace.
Next race Mac hit G&G boat in 200m. Hard to believe he did it on purpose. Extreemly bad judgement , trying to ride wash in 200 when you have very good crew and not stopping paddlers when collision was unavoidable ( Mac & bad judgement ? Gig surprise ?).
Of course , latter , G&G was DQed for running into Mac (did stop paddling well before contact) in what was a low impact but avoidable (as it apeared from shore ) brush.
