Overrated: Hanalei - some poor performances last yr, followed by lots of turnover
Underrated: Hydrophobic Dragons - consistently improving performance
My 2 cents.

So an under rated team is one that is up and coming while an over rated team is one that was great but fading???
I would argue that under rated teams are up and coming teams from out of area that are seen less often, and overrated teams the fading teams from out of area that race less often (like Bytown or SCC - who people think is the same team as Chiro).
I don't think anyone thinks Hydrophobic is slow after Toronto and GWN.

Underrated: Canadian Senior Dragon Boat Club - National team b.s. aside, this team is bloody fast and has consistently improved over the years. Have substantially narrowed and closed the gap to the once untouchable GWN Senior crews and has beaten the vaunted DragonBeasts (G&G East essentially). They are old, but they keep getting better with one of the best paddling coaches in the world (even though his methods rub many the wrong way). No team other than the aformentioned GWN Senior crew can lay reasonable claim to being better than this crew on a consistent basis and few can even entertain thoughts of beating them. Yet they are generally ranked behind G&G and Mayfair by perhaps younger and less open minded forumites.
Overrated: Scotia Rouge - After peaking in 2005 to win a club crew spot at NorAm, Scotia Rouge has taken a small step down. Barely squeaking by a victory at TIDBRF in 2006 over a depleted field, this crew substantially underperformed expectations at the 2006 CCWC. Now with only a trip to Hong Kong holding this crew together, I suspect that there will be a noticable fade by this once mighty crew as they move on to other interests. |

@Observer:
The reason why CSDB is usually ranked behind G&G and Mayfair is because it's true, look at last year's rankings:
http://www.dragonboatcanada.org/rankings/2006_Top250.htm
However, that is not to say that CSDB can't win a regatta if G&G and/or Mayfair are in it as well. It's just that the latter two teams are more likely to win it all than CSDB. Regardless, I would still rank CSDB one of the top five db teams in Ontario, if not, Canada.

The CSDB mixed team has done well and are underrated. Their women's team were upset in NTT last year but are probably the best SR team in the country also. Jimmy's boys have handled the men quite convincingly over the years. But overall I agree that CSDB team is a truly remarkable and underrated team. Mac is the best coach in the country.
Are the Dragon Beasts really G&G East? From their website and seeing them at festivals they look like a bona fide "team" of dragon boaters. As far as CSDB being better than them - I observed them in Ottawa and they were obviously struggling and figuring it out - and they still only lost one race out of six - albeit the most important one. They did not "race" well. Their tactics were bad and their start was bad. Quebec Cup was a different story. They toyed with Gorgin Dragons and had separation at Olympic Basin. I'll be interested to see them a year later. |

Nothing kills a good crew more than success. |

It's a cool website but the Beasts won't be much this year. A year older, other teams have improved and in Ottawa they will face the return of Events Alive and several other top quality crews. Plus CSDB team will be retooled and focused on Australia. Events Alive (or whatever team all the Rideau CC paddlers are in) will beat CSDB team by a boat length. CSCB team will beat everyone else by at least half a boat. I predict the Beasts will be fourth or fifth. |

So a year later, the Dragon Beasts will be a year older... how is it that other teams manage to avoid this? I don't understand the argument that getting older will hurt the Dragon Beasts, when the same poster is arguing that the Canadian Senior Dragon Boat Club (i.e. all over 40) will prevail!
I understand that one of the new paddlers on the Dragon Beasts is Steve Giles... that sounds like more of an upgrade than the Canadian Senior Dragon Boat Club could ever dream of!
I'd put my money on the Beasts. |

Over CSDB team, maybe. The kids from Rideau - all current, young, fit sprint racers are unbeatable by a bunch of seniors, which is what the Beasts are for the most part. |

I'd say the Beast have a shot at taking down the seniors. Ottawa usually isn't the CSDB's fastest crew (as not everyone on the crew makes the trek in) and the Beasts will be a year more experienced and a lot better prepared. It's pretty hard to call at this point but don't expect the Beasts to make the trek out if they don't intend to beat the seniors.
Events Alive would of course be expected to easily beat both - the MCC of Ottawa.
