2007 Alcan Dragon Boat RacesJune 19 2007 at 4:53 AM | Anonymous |
| Man...this year's dragon boat races were close! mainly in the junior races! Laoyam almost ended their 10 year winning streak to a out of town SF team (they also kicked major ass) first and second was only determined by .3 of a second while third was determined by 5 seconds!
Any comments that anyone would like to add to the junior races? (btw..first and second place got 2:05s) |

This is where it starts. Loayam led the way but look at what what's happening in Pickering with Mowat (2:06 I think in fresh water at the Island). Now S.F. is stepping it up. Awesome, all around.
As these teams and athletes mature in the sport, no one will be able to touch them. |

"As these teams and athletes mature in the sport, no one will be able to touch them."
We hear this song from every junior team that has any success, and it seldom carries through to any "legacy of greatness".
Teams are hard to keep together, and it seems that Junior teams are even harder in this respect. Life will intrude, the kids will move to go to school. Another Junior team will blow their own horn next year when the current team has scattered like leaves in the wind.
Remember the X-Paddlers? They had a few good years in their post-Mowat form, and some of them are still around but there is no dominant, lingering dragon boat powerhouse.
How about Red October? They thought they were pretty good too. Where are they now?
Layoam is admirable for sticking around as long as they have. Nice job keeping the crew together. The National team lure is a big part of that, I'm sure. And Mowat is ascendent again in the GTA. But I don't think the Mayfair's, FCRCC's and Scotia Rouges out there need fear that some x-Junior team is going to rule the scene a few years from now.
Never happens.
Enjoy University, kids. |

I hope Laoyam gets to see more San Francisco kids next year. My high school team from San Francisco went up to Alcan last year, we placed third. Our main rival team went up this year, they are really good, I'm glad to see them kick ass up there. Maybe out of towners will come down to San Francisco soon? |
