New Race Format at MIDBRFJuly 19 2007 at 3:07 PM | Anonymous |
| WHY?!
Is anybody for this change?
The part I find most ridiculous is that, on the first day you race with ANYBODY. And then BAM! on your first race of the second day you're expected to do your final 500m with the teams that are of your calibre.
No "semi final" style race to see how a team compares to others of the same speed.
Assuming both races of Saturday are random, then a fast team in a slow heat can potentially get times faster then a faster team in a fast heat, because of the wash affecting everyone.
Hopefully, only the first race is random, then the second race of Saturday is classified by time.
And on another point, the stupid "Best of the Festival" race, which has been cancelled two years in a row, might I add, is now to the fastest teams of ALL categories.
So in other words, we're gonna have another Men's Final, with MAYBE a mixed team or two popping up.
If you're reading this, Sunny (or any of the MIDBRF people), I'd like some explanations! |

Take a deep breath....it's going to be ok.
Sounds like the same format as the Island race. It's not that bad, buddy.
The one thing it does, is make sure that the fastest crews, get to the A final. No crews will be able to sneak in just because they were pulled down the course in a fast semi. |

It is a festival.
Be ready to sing and dance who cares about racing.
You will still be back the following year.

Looking at the MIDBRF website, semis and finals are still listed for Sunday, semis starting at 7am, and finals 11:30am. Do you have inside knowledge of changes? |

Best of a team's two Saturday 500m times will seed to one of 3 Finals (Premier, Intermediate, and Rookie) on Sunday.
Saturday afternoon are specialty 250m races, these are awarded on Sunday lunch time.
Sunday morning will be 500m held-start finals using Saturday's seeding.
Sunday afternoon will 250m held-start finals using Saturday's seeding. So you'll end up racing same teams as Sunday morning, but based on your Sunday's 500m result you'll fight for better lanes for the 250m Final race.
Once again Awards will be:
500m Premier (Mixed-Women-Men)
Final A-B-C (1st-2nd-3rd place of ea. final ) will be awarded Trophy+28medals
Final D-E-F-G-H... (1st place of ea. final) will be awarded Trophy+28medals
500m Intermediate (Mixed-Women-Men)
Final A-B-C (1st-2nd-3rd place of ea. final ) will be awarded Trophy+28medals
Final D-E-F-G-H... (1st place of ea. final) will be awarded Trophy+28medals
500m Rookie (Mixed-Women-Men)
Final A-B-C (1st-2nd-3rd place of ea. final ) will be awarded Trophy+28medals
Final D-E-F-G-H... (1st place of ea. final) will be awarded Trophy+28medals
250m Premier (Mixed-Women-Men)
Final A-B-C (1st-2nd-3rd place of ea. final ) will be awarded Trophy+28medals
Final D-E-F-G-H... (1st place of ea. final) will be awarded Trophy+28medals
250m Intermediate (Mixed-Women-Men)
Final A-B-C (1st-2nd-3rd place of ea. final ) will be awarded Trophy+28medals
Final D-E-F-G-H... (1st place of ea. final) will be awarded Trophy+28medals
250m Rookie (Mixed-Women-Men)
Final A-B-C (1st-2nd-3rd place of ea. final ) will be awarded Trophy+28medals
Final D-E-F-G-H... (1st place of ea. final) will be awarded Trophy+28medals
All awards will be given out almost immediately after your race. There's no waiting at the end of the day (over 4,000 medals will be handed out on Sunday, no way will it be saved until 4pm). |

Looks like this person had the inside scoop afterall!
Only difference I see is that the MIDBRF website's list of medal winners included top 3 in all divisions? Here is says top3 only in divisions A-C, and first in all others. Which is correct the message posted on this forum or the website? |

I think the new format was fantastic. The 250's were a lot of fun and the random 100m sprint for the men's teams was great to watch. Good job Montreal! |

What do you mean for the Men's teams? Verdun mixed was in the 100m Best of the festival. Philly Mixed was the second seed. Philly scratched the mixed but put a couple of women in the boat they raced in the 100m.

I have to say I enjoyed this race format. The only thing I would consider changing is instead of best time to determine ranking and placement in final, use the average times on Sat.
Good job in maintaining the festival pretty much on schedule. Great addition having the 250m. 100m was interesting to watch, though at that distance big advantage for lighter crews I believe, so please keep it exhibition/demo. Giving teams cases of water was a great, something that all festivals should be doing. No it didn't 17 year old announcer did not bother me. She gave ample notice for marshalling, with 3 calls to marshall which were loud and clear enough. Other than that what do I care if she decides to break out in song.
And on to the medals. I know lots of people could care less about the medals and others that feel jipped if they don't get one in R division. Montreal has always seemed to lead the way with the hardware and believe its a good thing. The ones that really care about the medals are the lower divisions (weekend warriors, noobs) and if it keeps them coming back for more as they improve good for them. I've always look at medals/cups as an added bonus, so extra brownie points here for Montreal.
Level of competition was great, from top to bottom this could be the top festival. Maybe Ottawa or GWN has better A final teams, but this overall seems to have a deeper field. MIDBRF team great job and just keep on improving. |
