Re: GWN predictions

I think these are actually pretty good.
A
1. ScotiaRouge
2. WRCC (unless they bring a team unlike anything we've seen - too high)
3. Hydrophobic Dragons
4. Piranhas
5. Canadian National Women's Team
6. Hanalei
A cons
7. BMO Groupe Financier (your thinking of last year, the team has slid but if they get some help from other Montreal crews maybe).
8. Big Fish (could be a surprise, have slid all season, or are they just waiting for a higher profile festival - we'll see)
9. MOFOs
10. Hammerheads
11. COllingwood Sidelaunchers
12. Team Chaos
B
13. Mojo's Reloaded (I'd actually give them the nod over Chaos, but it'll be close)
14. Urban Canoe Club (I'd expect them to be better - they have done pretty well at GWN for the last two years - and this year for that matter).
15. Wahoos
16. Jetstart
17. Saints - SJHC (perhaps a little low - I'd bump them a stop or two)
18. Wave Cutters
Forgotten teams:
1) SCC Phoenix (expect them to show up around 15)
2) PseudoBlades (how pseudo? they could be up there if they have most of their team from earlier this year)
3) Quicksilver may be close enough to hop on the tail end of this list)
4) Fairport Juniors - if they get a bit faster they might make the list, but I don't expect them to.

Finale
August 30 2007, 11:58 AM
I heard that both Scott and Rich were mortally injured in a mechanical bull riding mishap - trying the extremely difficult Russian Double Dismount - that the team barely finished the regatta and promptly tipped their new stetsons to the rest of the season.
Ranchman's bar - the scene of the incident mentioned above - was closed Sunday as a sign of respect to the fallen riders. Many have said that so many chaps were left at the establishment, the front door could not be opened.
Flowers and donations should be forwarded to the Many Happy Ending Spa in Mississauga and/or The French Maid gentleman's club in Calgary.

MGD will be a group of seniors (not Jim's full team, and probably half over 50 years old [at least the guys]) who will be paddling together for the first time this weekend. They're going to need some time to figure out how to work together, so I think any talk of open water is unrealistic.

Jim will be adding bodies, and 75% of this years Mayfair

I'm sure the athletes have enough financial load getting to Australia and a sponsored entry is helpful.

I'd be a little pissed though coming in second knowing you really won the event, or missed out on being in "B" for the first time...but you won "C"
because NDC attended as well. Just a thought.

Yeah, our national teams shouldn't be allowed to paddle in Canada before they go to Sydney! A true national team is different from a club team and has paddlers from all over. They should only be allowed to race in the world's trials, and then wait a year to race together in Sydney.

All you sissy men conciding defeat before the race has even started should stay home and not race at all. Being respectful of other teams is one thing, but all this homage to MGD is making me sick. Get over it and just race your race when the time comes.

yes - a stupid thought. what about all the good crews that chose not to geo this year. Maybe if the senior national team doesn't go - mayfair does - you think you are going to beat them? Chiro is not there either - if both chiro and mayfais go - the team that finishes second is now third.
Bottom line is - you finish where you finish - it is stupid to start saying that you deserved to finish higher because some national teams showed up to play.

Maybe not so dumb, just poorly worded.

Playing devil's advocate here, there are some valid arguments that National teams shouldn't compete at the club/coroporate/community level.
On the one hand I agree that our national teams need tune-up races prior to competing at the World level. Makes sense. You have to race as a crew against real competition to see what your strenghts and weaknesses are. And a good national team is a source of pride for our whole community. So they should be allowed and encouraged to race.
But on the other hand, it sucks to be a regular crew getting trounced by a selected, trained, genetically engineered monster team. Okay, maybe their DNA wasn't tinkered with, but I think there's little doubt that Jim's MGD Senior national mixed crew is going to kick some serious a$$ this weekend. They're also going to screw up the regatta in the worst way. Every heat they are in will benefit the two teams next to them. The finals will be decided why who get the lanes next to them too. Their mere presense will skew the results. And they will take away a win that you could argue rightfully should go to a "real" crew.
So there's the two arguments as I see them. You don't have to agree with them.
Maybe the solution is to have them race as an exhibition crew only. Paddle in outside lanes in the heats, be exlcuded from the finals but race a "fun" final against the top qualifiers, maybe as a extra challenge race on Saturday.
Just a thought. Vilify it as you will.
Of course, this whole argument depends on the MGD team actually being the Senior National team. If they're not, honestly, then the whole argument is moot and they're just another team with every right to be there as yours.

I'm not sure I understand the problem with Jim's crew racing.
Mac's former crew, the other seniors, race in Pickering & Ottawa.....how is that any different?

It makes me ill to read all the BS about good crews not being allowed to compete with the crappy crews.
Thre is always going to be a team that's better than the others. They're better because they've done something to be better. Whether that was training, starting young, getting good coaching, spending lots of money, whatever. They're better. Get over it.
They're the national team is because they're better. These are festivals that don't have a restriction as to whom can race. In the club crews, there are rules who can race, and they must be followed. At the GWN there are not. Again, get over it.
Stop crying that if only all those good crews didn't show up you'd have finished in B division. Wht don't you put your Wii down and do some real training and maybe you'll be in B division on your own merit not because you were lucky enough to be the only crew in the race.
Stop blaming others for your own shortcomings.

Community dragon boat festivals aren't part of some sanctioned league. You pay you play no matter who you are. No team is more entitled to compete than another. And if you finish second to a national team you should be able to take some satisfaction in that. You really need a generic piece of pewter to be happy?
When Simon Whitfield shows up at a local 10k do you think the other runners start grumbling, "Oh sh*t, now I'm gonna finish 86th instead of 85th"? Or are they excited to compete and measure themselves against an Olympic champion?
Exceptional talent is great for an event. If you can't appreciate the opportunity to see and compete against these teams then I suggest you take up Jazzercise or something, because you're not coping very well competitive sport.

If MGD is who every says they are they need to win. As much as a tune up GWN may be for these guys/girls, losing to any local club would be an embarassment.
Winning against this kind of team would be something else. I like the odds. Sign me up! Who's got space on their team for a rusty old blade?

So true.
All I can say is I look forward to racing head to head with some of these teams and wish them all the best in Sydney.
Once again this sport seems to really lack true athletes. The goal should be to compete against the best at YOUR best.
What a great opportunity to be able to watch the Junior Women race the Premier Women. Do you think those kids are complaining??? How exciting it must be for them. But I think that is where they are different from many involved in Dragon Boat.
See you on the start line.I'll have a cold beer waiting for you when you are finished.

If you've ever played any kind of organized sports you will know winners are there because like everyone else they take advantages when they can because they also know that everyone else would do the same then against them if they had the chance (within the rules of the game). I agree with Brad in that you have to be good to be lucky, because regardless of how lucky you may be if you can't take advantage of being next to a good team to ride their wash, then just about the only thing you can do is cry about how a national team should not be allowed to race in a local event.

"not knocking hanalei here, but the "have to be good to be lucky" crap is getting on my nerves"
Exactly. Same goes for these tired blanket phrases:
"They just wanted it more"
"Shut up and paddle"
"You must be one a team that can't beat X since you are complaining about X"
"Why are we afraid of competition?"
"If you worked on paddling instead of worry about <insert legitimate beef here> you might have won"

You guys are awesome and if there is ever a forum posting competition you should be seeded.
Unfortunately, you have decided that dragonboating is your athletic activity (and I am stretching quite a bit when I describe what you do on the water as athletic). While you might win gold in the "P" division, you will be far removed in ability and character from the teams in the divisions above you.

Nope. I don't understand why people can't recognize that top paddlers can also be concerned about issues of fairness and that itsn't all about the cliches (ie. shut up and paddle or I must suck and that's why I complain). Get a grip. Top paddlers have senses of fairness too.
