PaddleOne is a little bit cheaper. Only problem with it, it doesn't really mimic the downward force on the paddle......but I have heard of people raising the back of the machine to help with that.
Multistroke is probably the best machine, but it is also the most expensive.

The vermont waterways paddlemachine is an adaptor for a Concept II rowing erg while the other two mentioned above are paddling only. It all depends what you want.
imo
paddling adaptor

Why not just erg? Is there really a benefit to using a paddling adaptor?
Anyone have experience with this?

Ask a marathon canoer if there's any benfit to doing more paddling.
imo
more paddling yes - paddle adaptor not the same

Why don't people read posts before responding?
Paddling and paddling adaptor are not the same. I know the benefit of paddling, training, etc., etc. I was asking about benefits of paddling adaptor over erg without adaptor. No question more miles is a good idea.

I did read your post. And I answered accordingly.
What do you think would benefit your paddling more? PADDLING on a paddling adaptor, or rowing? The more miles you log paddling, the better. And you could always take off the adaptor and just erg if you really felt the desire to.

...and now the post degenerates into mud.
The poster was looking to buy a paddling Erg - not asking to evaluate the benefits of one.

I love my concept2

I really like using my concept 2 rowing erg.
Check out the website. www.concept2.com
I like that the website has a personal rowing log, worldwide and country rankings for several distances, practice of the day, seasonal competitions for prizes etc. This is very motivating to me.
I don't think that there are distributors around here, you buy it direct from the manufacturer.
And with the good cdn dollar, life is good.
You can buy these ergs at competitions like Crash in Toronto's CBC building, once a year and in St. Catharines (i think it was a university) competition, once a year. see concept2 website for full information.
If you want you can even hook up your PC laptop to the erg, hook it up to the internet and race someone somewhere else in the world or in your neighbourhood.

ergs

The Canadian Indoor Rowing Championship is usually held the first weekend in February, and afterwards they sell all the ergs they use there. This is a great deal.
Website is currently down, probably being retooled for 2008
Having an erg that you could use for rowing and then convert for paddling sounds like the best of both worlds, but I suspect it would be a better rowing machine than paddling machine.

Hiho, Silver. I bought my erg after that Canadian rowing competition and in hindsight, it was a ripoff!!
Now that the CDN$ is $ 1.03, I suggest you look in the US. You can get a good Concept II cheap. Adapt it for paddling, and then row when you want as well

I use a Concept 2 with the Vermont Waterways paddle adaptor and I find it to be a very good paddling erg. Endurance , power , interval, time trials etc. workouts all work very well. I have not heard of anybody using it for long slow training (longer than 1.5 hr.).

Concept2 is $850 brand new from manufacturer...
How much for the paddle adapter?
thx to all for you thoughts and input.
i ended up buying a concept 2 model d from fitness depot in barrie
they matched the web price from the factory.
the landed cost was $1137 cdn which included shipping $100, brokerage $150 and taxes.down from $1498 they were asking of uniformed consumers.
i think i'll hold off on the paddle adapter for a bit, lake simcoe is still open water for a while and when it gets hard i'll switch to my new x-country skiis and supplement with the erg and a couple of pilates and yoga classes /week.
i'm loading up my peg to go for a paddle on simcoe on this sunny afternoon.
peace and respect to all.
