I think we'll still see a bias of Lines on the Island, we always do. The lanes on the far side of the grand stand (I believe lanes 1,2,3) are always quicker. Rain should help, but its effects won't be felt as much by this Saturday.

Yes there's lane bias, but lane 1 is definitely not where you want to be. Who knows how much the weeds have grown and if GWN has done anything to fix that. Lane 1 is easily the worst lane at the Islands.

Dude! Why would GWN be fixing the weeds at the Island? They are only supplying boats and I believe-not sure laying down the course.

If you have a problem with the weeds contact your local politician to cleanup the waterways in the Toronto Island or better yet get off your computer and head down to the Island now to cut the weeds. Then smoke it.

Considering the above average snowfall and spring rainfall this year, in addition to a cool spring, I think water levels will be higher and weed levels lower than usual.

If pickering is any indicator, lane bias will be less pronounced than usual

Looking forward to the weekend

Man isn't there anything better to talk about than Lane Bias? It rears its ugly head every year and yet somehow the strongest teams still manage to win. Funny thing that.....

Lane Bias

If there is a truly dominant team, it can overturn the effect of a strong lane bias.

But among teams that are close, it counts. Take a team like Mayfair or CSDBC and they can churn through the weeds faster than most other teams can through clean, deep water. But if you're comparing teams that are closely matched, then bad lanes can count. I won't mention team names for an example here because it becomes a touchy subject.

But one example of perhaps the strongest team NOT winning due to lane bias was in Sudbury at the Central Region club crew race off a few years back. I think that Mayfair was the better team, but they tried too hard to cook the books in their favour which gave Pickering the outside lane in two final races. Pickering won on aggregate, partially because the outside lane was the deepest and cleanest.

Well, it went something like that. The details are already a little fuzzy, but I remember thinking that it was ironic that the "top teams" campaigned so hard for the middle lanes when the outside lane was the best ride. And too bad for them that they did, because it didn't help them.

They got their sanction later, btw, so no permanent harm done.

Solution, train for it!

Train for the bad.
Every practice site has a bad lane or a body of shallow water.
Pickering, Stratford, OH and Sunny Side all have shallow spots run a few race pieces in the shallow areas.

Don’t complain because you got a shallow lane and were not prepared to race in it.
Stop making excuses.

unfair advantage

June 19 2008, 1:22 AM

Hey folks,

After not posting on here for a crapload of time I've decided to weigh in (again). As someone who was involved in making the Island race course for the past 3 years, I can say that Lane 1 is generally more shallow than lane 4, that the start is generally more shallow than the finish, that the City tore out weeds for sure in '06 and '07, and that the water level of the Lake is about 8" higher than this time last year.

I also know that last year we moved the race further south (away from the grandstand) than I have ever seen it in 10 years, and felt that made the course more fair.

So those are the facts. I wouldn't dare to draw conclusions for all of you that know so much about so little
