It should be interesting. Until I see otherwise my money is still on Mayfair. For entertainment sake I hope that every crew brings their A game!

Mayfair and False Creek - rematch of 2006 CCWC

Mayfair will win this time.

The Beasts are battling out with Hydro, Chiro, etc. for third.

FCRCC will come to the party as they did before and will more than likely leave the same way they did last time ,they live for these chances

FCRCC is doing the National Team Trials and Mayfair is going to the Club Crews . A good portion of the FCRCC team are also competeing at the 2008 World Outrigger Sprint Championships in Sacramento ,California in Aug following the NTT's so they should be in very good form when they arrive and if they all stay for the Canadian Nationals after the NTT's

It will be all Beasts and Mayfair. Its a coin toss as to who wins. Both excellent teams w/ members from the 2007 Worlds. Too bad Events alive doesn't race but are the not just the Rideau Canoe Club?

The Beasts have some very good paddlers, but they don't have near the depth that False Creek and Mayfair have.
I think False Creek wins narrowly over Mayfair, the Beasts will be back a bit and may not even get third over some of the other very good crews like Hydro, etc.

I think the Beasts have more depth, but not as good Dragon Boat paddlers.

"The Dragon Beasts won both the Men's and Mixed Championships using a mixed crew at Lachine."

You seem to forget which of these mixed teams took second at the 2007 World Championships .Lachine is a cakewalk in comparision

Look at the times FCRCC mixed just posted in Alcan for example ,I suspect they will bring their game to us .The mixed A final was just prior to Open final and if you compare the times for their mixed crew its almost 3 seconds faster than the second and third place open crews in the mens final just minutes later . It's going to be very interesting to see how this ends up

Dragon Beasts in NTT?

June 26 2008, 5:46 PM

It appears that some are confusing the NTT and the "nationals". What I read is that in the NTT only Mayfair and FCRCC are entered in the Premier mixed. the information on the dbcanada site is pretty old however.

Mayfair is not entered in the NTT's ,just FCRCC . Mayfair and FCRCC are both entered in the Canadian Nationals which follows the NTT's .The NTT's are on the Friday and Nationals are Sat & Sunday .Hope that clears things up for those confused

A large number of Mayfair paddlers will be racing in one of the mixed crews in the premier age group at NTTs, but it will not be an exclusively Mayfair crew. Of course, Mayfair will race their club crew at the Nationals.

The Mayfair crew registered for NTT's is not just usual Mayfair paddlers. There will be some Nova Scotians in the boat. I see this boat winning it all, FCRCC dissapointed in Australia.

In all seriousness outside from the trash talk FCRCC is very very strong. I don't think they'll win the mixed sanction (Mayfair plus external help should be an insane crew), but they'll romp the open. RTF < FCRCC < (MCC+Friends)

What kills me here is how really stupid some of you are .Do you actually think that the team that was supposed to go to Australia (but jammed at the last minute) would of placed in the top 3 in the Open . You are idiots !

Both the first and second place teams (in open) set new World Record times with the Philipines doing it first and then the USA doing it in the final .I highly doubt the team Canada that was originally put together would of set any new world record .They barely beat FCRCC at the last NTT's but hey you all all allowed to dream

The "FCRCC (East meets West)" premier team at the NTT is a mix of paddlers from FCRCC, Ontario (Mayfair?), and the Beasts.

RTF did pull out of the Premier Open. The entry goes to the False Creek / Mayfair crew... maybe with some Beasts thrown in as well.

Mayfair/Beasts are racing False Creek for Premier Mixed.

Eat Trout is racing Grand Master, not senior (the DBC website is wrong and shows the same entries for both senior and grand master). Stan M. has the entries for Mixed and Men's, and there is a raceoff for the Women's entry.

The Jim Farintosh/Albert MacDonald/Tim Schaus syndicates have the senior entries (Mixed, Mens, Womens) by acclamation.

Toba Dragons are the River City Dragons from Winnipeg. They came in 4th in the Minor Final (10th overall) at the Penang race off in Calgary last year. Although it looks like they have pulled a 2:01 in a regatta this year (doesn't mean much without context).

RACE TIME

July 15 2008, 2:27 PM

wow, the list of teams are amazing! can't wait to watch and race this weekend!
i agree with the previous post, it's going to be extremely hard to make it into A Final. most of the top teams from Center island race would end up in B or C division with this level competition.

1) Mayfair Predators
2) FCRCC
3) Dragon Beasts
4) Hydrophobic Dragons
5) SCC Sudbury Team Chiro
6) CSDC (Senior)

can we assume top 3 spots are locked for mayfair, fcrcc and Beast?
Hydro did extremely well over the years and have shown everyone they are the real deal.

even with such improvement, i think it's going to be a close call between csdc, chiro and hydro

any input?

Re: Onto the Canadian Nationals - Who's in,Who's out

July 15 2008, 2:37 PM

It's gonna be hard for anybody to make the A final in the premier mixed. Except for maybe False Creek and Mayfair. Most of the races are going to be four lanes. Does this mean the lanes will be wider. Can we say less susceptible to wash riding?

Most Competitive Race....ever.

July 15 2008, 2:57 PM

Well, maybe not. But pretty close.

Looks like only a few players are missing, including Scotia Rouge, G&G, Wong's Dragonslayers, and...Mojo's Reloaded?!?! (How the f#ck did they get into the top 10 anyhow?)

So a few missing crews but otherwise a very, very competitive field.

Someone up there had it right, Mayfair, FCRCC and Beasts as Top 3 contenders, Hydro, Seniors and Chiro fighting for the 4th spot in the A Final. But as usual watch out for Hanalei to try to slide in there.

After that I think you have to take Piranhas seriously either as 4th in A or first in B, being challenged by the Adrenalines of Montreal.

Hammerheads and Chaos will be out to prove they're above the rest of the pack, with Big Fish also trying to mount a charge to stay out of the basement division.

Fun stuff. It's going to be nervous times at the results board!

Re: Onto the Canadian Nationals - Who's in,Who's out

July 15 2008, 3:32 PM

A Division:

Agreed - FCRCC - Mayfair and The Beasts are a lock. This is going to be a great, great race.

I think Hydro will be the 4th team in.

B Division:

CSDC Seniors, Chiro, Hanalei and Piranhas make this division - and finish in that order.

C Division:

This is going to be a great dog fight indeed. Too tough to call!

Verdun should top this group, with Big Fish - Hammerheads, Chaos and PDBC battling hard.

The rest:
TOBA - complete wildcard. Could factor in C maybe? Would be surprised if they finished any higher than that.

Montreal Adrenaline - much better then Stroke the Dragon, and Aquaholics - but not as good as Verdun, hammerheads etc...

GEEZ enough with wash riding and how they always ride it

who cares, it's old news,

i don't think any top team will ride wash in this event. this is the biggest and most competitive events for yrs,

any top tier teams out there who wants to prove themselve to be superior won't be thinking of riding wash....

Damn, nearly coughed up coffee through my nose reading that!

You serious? "Superior" teams understand wash riding, both how to do it and to best avoid being victimized by it.

As for lanes, standard IDBF width will be fine, thanks. Just keep the course out in the deep water.

Mayfair and FCCC are arguably the 2 best club teams in the world right now. FCCC mixed came 2nd in the Worlds in 1;53 against National teams. And indications are Mayfair is even better than them.

Imagine a Canadian race that any of Hydro, Chiro or CSDC may not be in the A-Finals!?

A warm welcome to the out-of-town teams like FC and the Beasts. Hope you guys/gals have a great time here!

Only one will win, but they will still all be great crews...don't forget it.

Let's get down there and support this and enjoy some amazing racing, starting on Friday.

Canadian Champ. That's it.

On a CCWC qualifying year the top 5 qualify for CCWC.

5 Qualify, but not TOP 5

July 16 2008, 10:31 AM

"On a CCWC qualifying year the top 5 qualify for CCWC."

No, the spots are awarded based on a mix of regional race-offs, if necessary, with extra spots awarded based on National Championship results if there is a National Championships.

For Penang CCWC spots for instance, Mayfair won the Central Region race-off while Piranhas and Chiros got their spots via the National Championships in Calgary.

fast forward to monday

July 16 2008, 11:02 AM

I predict that come monday this forum will be full of talk about:
1) How teams did not race with their full crews
2) How certain teams cheated bu riding wash, despite being given warnings
3) How certain teams cheated, and should have been dq because of inproper passing in the 2k race.
4) How some teams after qualifying at ntt might not care so mich about the cdn nats.
5) How joel and brad are meant for each other and should run for office together
6) How some teams did not show great sportsmanship
7) How x team is so much better then y team, but then others will chime in and say that the cdns mean nothing and that it's just one race
Any other excuses...lol lay them out now and let's start guessing how many excuse posts there will be come monday!

Re: Onto the Canadian Nationals - Who's in,Who's out

July 16 2008, 11:12 AM

How could I forget the most obvious ones such as:
1) Lane bias
2) Headwind vs tail wind vs sidewind
3) How x team pulled a faster semi time then y team but because only the top 2 teams move onwards to the a finals it was unfair (boohoo).
4) how the starter was an azz and was unfair to allow boat x to get a running start
5) How there should have been tied starts (do you guys know if there will be?)
6) How the times were so close that it could have been human error...

We've heard it all...so save yourself the embarrasment and shame and race hard.

That's dumb.

July 16 2008, 11:14 AM

Nice attempt to get teams to travel, but the one-per-region +2 at Nationals system worked just fine. This new system, if they do in fact ever use it, favours the teams close to the location of the Nationals too much.

For example, what if they hold the next Nationals in Halifax?

Re: Onto the Canadian Nationals - Who's in,Who's out

July 16 2008, 5:58 PM

Given a 4 lane race course, in the heats, teams must first make the top 8 to move into A/B semi finals. There will be two A/B semi final races, top two from each A/B semi will go to the A Finals, bottom 4 will go to the B finals.

There will be 2 2K race for premier mixed. The first one will be for the bottom 9 teams (B), the second one will be the A final. Your time from the 500 meter race will seed you. Could be interesting to see what happens here as points are up for grabs. Would be interesting to see all 17 teams race at the same time, but am not sure if they have enough boats for that.

Overall winner is the team that gets the most cumulative points in the 200/500/2K race. For each final race, 200/500/2K, teams will get points based on how they finish.
Points System
1) 21
2) 18
3) 16
4) 14
5) 13
6) 12
.
.
.
17) 1

Good luck to all teams.

Re: Onto the Canadian Nationals - Who's in, Who's out

July 17 2008, 1:33 AM

Hmm, depending on how they seed the Semis, there could be some interesting upsets if only the top 2 in each Semi heat move onto 'A' and not fastest times. Hypothetically, if Mayfair, FCRCC, Dragon Beasts and Hydros are all in one of the Semis, it's guaranteed that 2 of those teams will not make it into 'A' even though most predictions have Mayfair, FCRCC and Beasts as lock for 'A' Final. Could be interesting...

In order for this to happen it would mean that these teams would have to somehow finish 1st, 2nd, 7th, and 8th. That could happen. Anything could happen. It will be exciting.

2,3,6,7

I highly doubt you will see a Mayfair FCRCC Hydro Beasts semi.

Re: Onto the Canadian Nationals - Who's in,Who's out

July 17 2008, 2:45 PM

Here's a few things that will be talked about on Monday.
1. How a shocking upset came to be with Mayfair and Faulse Creek on the lower levles of the podium.
2. How Hydro's keep getting faster.
3. How great the starter was. Yes she will be good.
4. How Joel and Brad can't run for office as they will never decide who will be vice president. Unless it comes down to an arm wrestle. I vote Joel!!
5. Who gets the most warnings and who is actually dumb enough to get dq'd. I vote the opposite from #4.jk(please no offence B)
6. Who has the best excuse for not showing up.
7. Who would have won had they been able to practice more in the newly renevated suage coarse.
8. Well at least PDBC is used to that. I hear they don't need lights on there boat at night becasue they all glow from the power plant.

Now this is very silly and not to be taken seriously. let's get out there race and have some fun. Remeber that. That's why we all started in this sport.

Adding to above list
9. Stroke the Dragon rides the Mayfair bus to the A finals
10. Cox from Stroke the Dragon installs himself as Supreme Leader, therefore trumping the need for Joel and Brad to decide who is vice-president.

Starts

July 17 2008, 9:13 PM

Looks like they are putting the docks at the start line for held starts. And those lanes combined with the ghost lanes are looking awfully wide - gonna be that much harder to ride the bus...

Re: Onto the Canadian Nationals - Who's in,Who's out

July 17 2008, 10:16 PM

Held starts, wide ghost lanes...that's great for a fair race. The interesting part will be once again the 2000m...no held starts, no ghost lanes, how tight can you make your turns, how good can you ride wash, who will stop paddling should boats collide...I think the Premier Mixed 2000m will be quite a show. Hope someone will capture it on video while I paddle my brains out!!

Re: Starts

July 17 2008, 11:19 PM

Yes, looks like held starts is a "GO", as for the "awfully wide lanes" they didn't look so wide today.. Any team can still ride into the final w/o even trying...

Re: Onto the Canadian Nationals - Who's in,Who's out

July 17 2008, 11:45 PM

Do they have idbf standards on the width of the ghost lanes? They don't look that far apart is what I'm trying to say.

Anonymous

Huh?

July 18 2008, 12:45 AM

It's funny how two people can look at the same thing but see things entirely different.

"Yes, looks like held starts is a "GO", as for the "awfully wide lanes" they didn't look so wide today.. Any team can still ride into the final w/o even trying..."

Really? The "ghost lanes" were as wide as the lanes! Meaning that the lanes were narrow and the ghost lanes wide. This restricts a crew's movement within their own lane while giving a larger distance between lanes. It looked pretty much like having an empty lane between each lane.

Wash riding? It may still happen, but it will be a lot harder than usual.

Re: Onto the Canadian Nationals - Who's in,Who's out

July 18 2008, 9:20 AM

We were out on the course last night. GWN has made the ghost lanes wider, and they've taken that space from the race lane (instead of keeping the race lanes the same width).

It will be harder to ride wash, but not impossible.

Also, GWN has pushed the course closer to the shore. Not sure what affect (if any) that will have.

The closer one gets to the shore the more shallows and weeds one encounters, could be a factor!
