Sudbury Predictions

July 9 2008 at 9:26 PM
Anonymous

Not many competitive teams headed to Ramsey Lake this weekend; I would lay odds that unless Chiro paddlers are tying one arm behind their backs that they'll easily take their home event.
If they do tie one arm behind their backs, look to them to take third...
The rest seems to be a bit of a crapshoot for that final race. In no particular order, the rest of the top six will be:

- Jetstart
- Collingwood
- Phoenix
- U of T
- Tail Gaters

Flame away...

BTW, and this is specifically for Power Demon, is Sudbury included in your rankings this year?

PD was already asked that question in the "Rankings Update" thread... his response was:

"I agree that it may not be the best use of time to add a festival that falls thin for a given year. However, by the same token I have committed to trying to add any festivals that had a competativeness indicator of 1 in the previous year - in an attempt to keep the ranked festivals more consistent over time, and so crews can no ahead of time which ones will count. I'll definetly do my best to uphold this, but as you so rightly pointed out the more competative ones may take priority."

Re: Sudbury Predictions

July 10 2008, 10:55 AM

1. SCC Team Chiro
2. Collingwood Sidelaunchers
2. Tailgators
2. Jetstart
5. SCC Phoenix
6. SCC Dragons

Sorry Tailgators but Team Chiro are a lock for victory, after all they DO practice just a bit!

Collingwood, Tailgators and Jetstart will be 2nd, 3rd and 4th, but in what order I have no clue. Phoenix should be 5th. And I'll take SCC Dragons to round out the A final, but it could easily one of Barrie Thunder, Hawaii 50, Catch 22 or U of T Scartan...

Pray for SUN!

Not much to choose from outside of the known quantities and so here goes:

1) Chiros
2) Jetstart
3) Tailgators (hate to rank a put together team over a team that practices regularly but gotta do it-on a hunch)
4) Collingwood
5) SCC Pheonix
6) Catch22

Rumor mongering...

July 10 2008, 2:39 PM

Jetstart - a few fillers from faster teams.
Collingwood - a few fillers, but not sure who.
Tailgators - 100% filler + Joel, who walks on water.

The use of the word "our" could represent "us as a forum" as well and should not be used as it is generally not refective of the nature of this forum.

If in fact that comment came from someone on Fondue then that's not cool. But that could have come from anyone. Calling people idiots is not nice either.

Re: Sudbury Predictions

July 13 2008, 8:21 AM

Chiros (of course): 1:57
Jetstart: 1:59
Collingwood: 2:02
Phoenix: 2:04?

Sorry, can't remember the fifth and sixth teams, but it was either Tailgators in a time of 2:06:something-something, and then Catch 22 or Dragoneers (local team), and they came in right behind Tailgators (or, you know, the other way around; regardless, that team had a time of 2:07:something-something... it was a long drive home last night!)

A brief burst of rain around 2:30ish or so, winds out of the south-south-east for most of the day, gusting to (supposedly) around 25 km, giving us a bit of a crosswind/tailwind for most of the day, and a bit of a chop (the thunderstorms promised by Environment Canada held off and skirted to the south, I think). The starter has us drift up to the line in the first round; second and third round organizers switched to having a held start (personally, I thought the held starts worked out better). The wind eased down a bit for the final and the sun came out, but it was still a bit of a bumpy ride.

Surprisingly, the conditions - especially in the middle of the day - didn't seem to cause that much of a problem for the teams. There was only one significant collision that I can think of, in which one of the local teams ran into another local team, and either tipped it over or caused the paddlers to jump out of the boat (the safety people were towing people back into shore). The other one was kind of humourous, as after the race, as the teams were preparing to come back in, one team turned into another (at a faily slow speed by that point), and took the dragon head off the boat.

There also seemed to be some screwy issues with result postings; for the semis they didn't even had Jetstart listed at first, and they had the second-fastest time of the morning.

Kudos to Jetstart; in that final they seemed to be hanging pretty good with Chiros for the first 300 metres...

Washriding is all part of the game. If a team wants to take advantage of the chiros wash and knock a few seconds of their time - why not?

Re: Sudbury Predictions

July 13 2008, 8:33 PM

there was an agreement made between Jetstart and Chiro's to ride the left side of their lanes in order to keep tailgators off Jetstarts wash as best as possible.

"there was an agreement made between Jetstart and Chiro's to ride the left side of their lanes in order to keep tailgators off Jetstarts wash as best as possible. "

oh this is juicy. Why would Chiros have such an agreement to help out its competition?

No agreement

July 13 2008, 8:58 PM

There was no such agreement between Chiro and Jetstart.

Sudbury

Agreement?

July 13 2008, 10:01 PM

An agreement does not seem to make any sense but a strategy by Jetstart to ride Chiro wash seems obvious. Kudos to Jetstart's cox for a masterful wash riding performance.

Wash riding

Wash riding is cheating. Are there not rules against this practice and how come no race officials made sure the final was an honest race? What happened in Sudbury?

you dumb a$$ if both teams stay to the left side of their lane, it helps neither team out.

Re: Sudbury Predictions

Jetstart has probably never run any where near a sub 2 min time. They clearly jumped on the wash of the chiros. Isnt' this a strategy that Jetstart follows all the time? Regardless, this was a fun day of racing. We had fun...we came up from Barrie and really enjoyed ourselves. Thanks to the organizers for a fun day. Too bad there was huge crosswinds and waves but the beer was cold.

WHy in the world would the Chiros agree to help Jetstart out. Hey buddy... can I wash you so that the other team doesnt beat us. The benefit to this is we will win $0 dollars. Great deal.

Jetstart was seeded 2nd or was it 3rd heading into the final. So, they pretty much did what was expected of them in that race. Congratulations on a great race - Jetstart.

Re: Sudbury Predictions

July 14 2008, 9:20 AM

LOL...right. And Jetstart was only 2 seconds slower than the Chiros on their home water. I'm sure Jetstart finished in their correct place. Just not their correct time. J-Start should be at least 5 seconds slower.

Re: Sudbury Predictions

July 14 2008, 10:22 AM

Jetstart was right beside Chiro over 300m and as Chiro pulled away they probably got a drag to the finish and that sub-2:00 minute time. But they put themselves in position to get it. Conditions were much better for the final and most teams dropped about 3 seconds. Jetstart did 2:04s in the rough conditions, so you could argue they might have been a couple seconds slower without Chiro, but not five.

Re: Sudbury Predictions

July 14 2008, 11:25 AM

I watched the race from the shore. The chiro boat went down the middle of their lane for the whole 500m and the Jetstart boat went to the very side of their lane to the Chiro boat and was just missing the bouys most of the way down. I really do not think that the Chiros were trying to help any team by going down the middle of their lane. Jetstart was definitely on the chiro wash for most of the race, and it may have cost the chiros some time and gained Jetstart some time, but Chiro still won - so who cares

Wow that's pretty impressive on what Jetstart did. Did Jetstart have the same crew or they did they make any substantial roster changes?

Re: Sudbury Predictions

Jetstart are not only a good crew, but are also a good group of people.

They had some vacancies, which were filled with a few Hyrdophobic and a couple of Chaos paddlers.

Good for them, they raced well all day and gave Chiro a run for the money in the final.

Sudbury Observations

July 14 2008, 3:37 PM

Significant decline in the competitivness of this event and in the number of teams entered.

Mediocre officiating and starts that could sometimes not be heard by all teams...Ottawa fixed this so can you!

Nice new waterproof race time booth was an improvment over last years system of picking up crumpled wet race time sheets from the ground.

Still a great location to race but a long drive for non-Sudbury based teams.

Good racing by the Chiros and Jetstart-plus.
