I have posted this before and it dropped pretty fast and is now second page news. I hope Derek doesn't mind me resurrecting this post onto his topic. It is relevant. Fall is when OC paddlers look to turn over their boats because it takes awhile for us to get our new ones delivered. I don't know if Gord's boat or the Fusion are still available. If they are perhaps those guys could chime in here too and have all the boats in one thread. Derek if you are offended by this do e-mail me and please accept my apologies.
Anyways here it is again. Another OC for sale. A Tiger Makia. It is three seasons old lightly used. It is my wife's boat but she and I have both paddled it. She's 5'3" 120lbs and I'm 6' 215lbs so the boat will handle a variety of body sizes. I have had her out for a paddle recently and she is a very nice boat. No repairs required. The boat is designed for flatter conditions, long waterline and skinny.
It is here in Toronto/Whitby and is available for $3000 OBO.
If you are interested drop me an e-mail jwwhitbyguy@yahoo.com. Happy paddling

Jeff, I checked out the link. How do the iakos attach on Tiger's boat?
Also, I will be updating the list of available boats later this week as a few of the boats have sold and the for the ones that are left, many of the sellers are receiving multiple offers.
I will have a better idea of what is left once I have a chance to follow up with the sellers

The Iakos attach to the ama with a screw which pushes a flat piece of composite that is part of the ama into the iako securing it. That makes the iako/ama adjustment at the back of the ama completely adjustable. The amas attach to the boat with a round metal pin that is part of the iako. You push it down and feed it into a hole in the boat and when it is in the pin springs back up to secure the iako onto the boat. I think the Hukis have this type of attachment.
The attachment is pretty secure. I did an ama-under huli in Virginia with my boat (not the one we are selling) learning how to surf in the shore break. It was alot of fun (you go fast) but I don't surf shore break much anymore. Too risky for the boat and the waves in Lake Ontario can be pretty good at times. Looking forward to trying the Maui to Molokai race some time. Derek/Larry good luck with your training for the solo in April. I'll be rooting for you guys.

quick update
October 23 2008, 12:39 PM
most of the used boats have sold
There is one Pegasus left
Was $3600.
I have no doubt that the seller will raise his price as the replacment price (new boats) has just gone up by over 25% due to exchange rate
There are two Fusions left
$3200 cdn for one (located north of Toronto but seller willing to bring down for serious buyers)
The other is $2900 and is located in the GTA
These are larger volume boats and would be best suited for larger males (at least over 6 feet and at least over 200lbs)
I think that Jeff still has the Tiger boat as well
I will have new boats available from various manufacturers soon
Boats will range from $3300 to $3900 usd (factor in exchange rate and freight and gst)and you will be looking at about $4700 to $5500 canadian all in cost to the GTA.
Used boats sell for about $300 to $500 less then new depending on their use and model
If you can find a boat, now might be the time to buy it as it does not appear that prices will be coming back down unless exchange rate goes back down
OC2
OC2 for sale. $4000
October 30 2008, 12:55 PM
Albatross Ultralight - Carbon Fiber OC2--
1.5 years old
White/Red/Yellow colour
Comes with both deep water and sprint rudders
I find it funny that people would buy an albatross when "real" OC-2's (sit on top) are about the same price. Is it just because of the cockpit or is there some other reason.

So, which boat do YOU sell?

Good luck finding a sit on top OC-2 for $4,000! The albatross is a heavier boat and not appropriate for racing, but for training it is fine. Also, with the cockpit and spray skirts, you can keep warmer and paddle (on flat water) later on in the season.

The person selling the boat had contacted me prior to posting and I did give her a little feedback, but I wanted to offer one opinion
A cockpit boat does not make it easier to paddle during the colder months as they are much more difficult to get back into should you flip. Now I know you are going to say...we paddle it on a river...we are ok and have good balance....but we have had guys flip in sprint boats in December (hit a log with paddle....etc....so it can happen)and when it does you better have other boats around you to help you pdq.
A sit on top boat would be much easier to get back into
Ironically, prices for new OC-2s are not much more then new OC-1s. Don't ask me why, I have no idea, but is most likely a supply/demand thing.
I know that you can get new OC-2s from $3400 to $3800usd
Both models are used here in Toronto, although the $3400 model seems to be more popular and better suited (The $3800 model is more of a surfing boat...big rocker)
But don't forget that you got to factor in shipping ($350 to $500 cdn) plus GST plus exchange rate
So maybe you are looking at $4800 to $5400 Canadian
The Albatross models are extremely durable. The boat would be well suited for a club use or maybe even if you had to use outside storage.
Oh, and I have raced an Albatross OC2 before. It was the first race that Larry and I did Around the Island a few years back. The only issue we had with it was not the boat, but the rudder (which was in need of repair and we didn't know it before we took it out) Boat was fine.

I've always thought of the albatross as a death trap in rough water. And no I don't sell any kind of boat. I just like to paddle in lots of them. I am not sure how I would empty an albatross if I dumped it. Just ask a couple of guys from Balmy Beach that had an helicopter rescue in Lake Ontario how safe an Albatross is.

Albatross is a perfectly safe boat, just need to use your head and be prepared. As in any boat. A huli recovery is definately not as easy as a sit on top, but regardless as long as you have a bailer, you are fine. Probably wouldn't take it into huge waves for that reason.

I have an OC2 Albatrose with cockpit I use to paddle with my 8 year old daughter in front of our house. I like it a lot. Comfortable , room to carry stuff like lunch , drinks etc. Stable. Lots of fun.
Only complaint is it is heavy to carry to the beach by myself.

If you are referring to the incident by the Frenchman's Bay a few years back, I believe it was a Huki, not an Albatross.

He said guys from Balmy Beach. The incident occurred at Frenchman's Bay. The guys were forced to try to climb on to the concrete towers in the lake at the entrance to the Bay, because they couldn't get back on the boat.

Cockpit Oc-1
November 6 2008, 11:46 AM
I think there is a perception that a cockpit oc-1 is more dangerous than a sit on top.
A cockpit Oc-1 ,of course, will fill with water -if it has a venturi drain or a footwell drain then the water has someplace to go. Then no worries - right yourself get in off the back Iako and away you go.
BUT - No matter whether it be a sit on top or cockpit oc-1. As paddlers we must judge the conditions we are going out in. Winter rules apply - stay close to shore.
As an aside many of clubs have cockpit oc-1 that have footwell drains- FCRCC has at least 15 of them. They don't seem to be a problem. After all a cockpit is way warmer in the winter.
As the saying goes :
"better to be on the beach wishing you were out there - than to be out there wishing you were on the beach !"

None of the Fcrcc surfriggers have drains ,you huli you be bailin' .The C-lions do not have drains either but they are sit on top so only the footwells may be filled

stop whining about huling...if you stop trying to paddle an Oc like a DB, you won;t huli or need the ama so much.. look at the sprint guys at fcrcc. they sit centred and the ama just sizzles along..
