World Champion FCRCC Dragon Boat Teams

Sez who? Did they even go to Penang? Is this a hangover from Toronto 2006? Former world champions? Why doesn't it say "world club crew champions" or "former world club crew champions"? The dragon boat purity police better get on top of this one!

Of course, this is just pure BS I am putting up here. FCRCC is using its own "spin" to promote its product, a money making conference. Hey, if you got it flaunt it, once a world champion always a world champion in my book.

They took over when the flat water Toronto group packed it in. I don't beleive they have had the success the Doug's group brought to the sport of dragon boat.

8th IDBF International Dragon Boat Racing Championship 20/09/2007 to 23/09/2007 Sydney ,Australia

Race 37 - PREMIER MIXED 2000
Heat:
Place Lane Name Time
1 8 Canada 9:51.82
2 7 Germany 9:55.73
3 2 Macau 9:57.93
4 1 New Zealand 10:21.58

That result would make FCRCC the World Champion in the 2000 meter ,they also took silver in the 500

Anything else you want to know ?

Penang was a club crew not a World Championship !!

To compare Pogue Sports coaching to Kamini's coaching in D/B is like nite & day . When did Pogue ever have a competitve dragonboat team or dragonboat team at all for that matter ??? They are mainly a outrigger team so if you are looking to train outrigger ,good choice ,but dragonboat I would say wrong choice

2000m

November 5 2008, 11:00 AM

The 2000m race was not an official distance in Prague, it was an exhibition race. Points did not count towards the Nations Cup, so not all countries entered their top team or in some cases any team at all.

The 2000m race has NEVER been an offiical distance, but is the only one that an FCRCC based crew has ever taken a "gold" in.

Can you be the "World Champion" of an exhibition race? Argumentative at best. They should drop the claim, imo.

Can you please show us where it said it was an exhibition race ? When did they ever award medals in an exhibition race ? And I take it you mean't Sydney ,Prague will also have a 2000

Check the medal tables

November 5 2008, 11:29 AM

Yeah, I meant sydney. But if you want confirmation of the distance not being official then check the medal tables from 2007.

http://www.idbf.org/documents/results/2007WC_Medals.pdf

There are no 2000's listed in Nation's Cup point totals. So if it wasn't an "exhibition" race, what would YOU call it?

To the almost all the people above. JUST SHUT UP. I'm sick and tired of (I'm going to assume) the same people bitcin and whining about every little thing. You are the people who degrade this forum, who are probably seat 11 paddlers and want nothing to do with expanding the sport into a possible elite sport. This conference is a great idea, I see it as a great opportunity for mediocre coaches or clubs to gain valuable experience in the sport, and for elite personnel to discuss current issues about the sport in a PROFESSIONAL WAY, something that a lot of people on this forum lack. You guy's are probably going to bash on ME now, go ahead, show how much of an idiot you are. If you have nothing productive to say, don't say it, go back to your video games and tell your mom I'll see her tonight.

apparantly both Waters Edge and Pogue Sports are putting on camps at the same time but what i can see Pogue seems to have more better known hawaiian paddlers such as the Foti's

You get what you pay for.

November 5 2008, 2:01 PM

Water's Edge has such a good reputation-they have consistently produced a quality product. I would say Pogue is cheaper only becuse he wants to take business away from Water's Edge.
Yes Pogue and W.E. both have a camp in Hawaii - for outrigger; Water's Edge is run out of Hawaiian Canoe Club ( one of the most successful OC club in Hawaii) and the coaches are Rick Nu'u and Kia Barlett,( a rather big name) among others.
Ya Pogue is running a outrigger and dragon boat camp - And I wonder where he got that idea from - Water's Edge?
Differece of price is the quality of the product- I would put my money on Water's edge.
You know, you do get what you pay for.

that would make it a tough choice ,all are awesome oc paddlers ,it comes down to ones budget . I would think Waters Edge should promote those coaches rather than advertise canadian coaches with lots of hawaiian experience , not the same imo

Anonymous

cheaper is one thing

November 5 2008, 8:12 PM

But when your competitors charge 50% of what you charge, I think it says more about the greed of one company

There has been a camp in Florida for dragonboat/outrigger for years
I've been there are and could do two weeks for what the canpaddle people are charging for one week for their camp

BC folks finally tired of getting ripped off so business slow?

And the earlier poster is right

2km don't count for squat at Worlds as most teams don't race it at World Champs

"Pogus Sports"- exactly ! They are a bunch of posers in all paddlesports- certainly nowhere near the real thing.
Any monkey can sell a canoe - it takes talent to coach. So why go to their camp? - just cuz it cheaper? Gotta wonder what has been left out ...?

intresting post WE

Pogue sponsors crews that have done well in outrigger
mens races
12th and 14th in Molokai Hoe?

And your men have only broken the top 15 when they raced with them? (not including the boys from over 25 years ago)

The boys from Pogue are also something like 7 or 8 times world champions in Mens and mixed dragonboat

don't post out east just to steal our money

staging area... docks... who uses that stuff to get in a canoe or a dboat?

see that's the difference out west.. we use the beach to launch, cusz we can...that and we're tough enugh to handle the cold water..

"oooo it's cold, let's load teh boat from the dock"... pussies.

November 9 2008, 10:20 AM

How much is each camp?

I've been going the GWN dragon boat camp for the last 3 years. The price of the GWN camp has gone up every year, now $400 (camp fee only, no travel, food or condo).

A friend from Montreal just sent me the info on the 22Dragons camp, $295 taxes in.

I went to the Qc Cup in the fall and was impressed. If they run a camp like they do events then GWN should be scared.

Personaly I won't go to the 22dragons camp but will defenitely be listening to abyone who does go.

It does seem that GWN is getting too expensive.

It's nice to know there is a less expensive alternative.

Sorry to all the westerners, once again a west topic starts to turn east!

Re: 2009 North American Dragon Boat Conference Announcement

November 10 2008, 9:23 AM

This will be my first year not going to the GWN camp. Last year I was put in a crew with only 14 paddlers. I had been paddling for 6 years and there were two people in my crew that LITERALY was their first time holding a paddle. Our coach did a great job but our group was constantly held back with the rookies. A few of us complained to Jim but we were not switched out.

I'll be looking at one of the smaller camps. Either Peter's camp or now I might check out the 22D camp. I have a feeling that smaller might be better for training camps.

Anyone been to Peter's camp. Can anyone tell me more about the 22D camp?

Peter's camp is really good. Individual attention, grouped by level of ability, equipment provided, competitive program, great coaching, beautiful location (close to Dunedin, Clearwater, Tampa, reasonable price.

Ryan Pogue placed third in his category (behind D Ching) men's solo in Kona this year. I'd say he knows how to paddle and coach.

Re: 2009 North American Dragon Boat Conference Announcement

Paddling and coaching are two different things. I know many athletes who are horrible coaches (even in their sport of choice), and many good coaches who are marginal athletes. You will sometimes find both competencies in the same person, but it's not automatic.

So based on the above, Ryan Pogue is a competing at a high level. How is he as an OC coach? ...a dragonboat coach?

Anyone ever been coached by him?

I've been coached by him, he's just as good as all the other 'top' coaches. He has a keen eye and can assist all levels of paddlers with improving and pushing one to achieve their best.

Isn't this post about Water's Edge Dragon Boat conference. Time to get it back on topic people.

It's all about money

November 12 2008, 2:10 PM

You will never see so much aggro and bitching on the forum as you will when money is involved. Well, either that or the U.S. vs. Philly rivalry. Or maybe the New College vs. That College vs. Some Other College rivalry. But I digress. Let's talk money.

A lot of anonymous crapweasels come out of the woodwork when money is involved. GWN camp vs. OCpaddler vs. 22Dragons vs. the San Diego thing. Hey, there's money to be made from dragon boaters, let's sharpen our knives and stab each other in the back on the forum! What fun! Too bad they all look bad doing it, even those who aren't actually doing it themselves at all but are being made to look just as foolish by some well intentionned "booster".

Same thing for those selling outrigger canoes. Most of these guys know each other socially but they all crap all over each others boats on the forum. Yeah, lots of Aloha spirit in the outrigger world...except where it intersects with the business world.

But hey, it's a long boring offseason and we need entertainment. Flame on!

Re: 2009 North American Dragon Boat Conference Announcement

November 12 2008, 3:32 PM

Bottom line: Its got to be worth while for coaches and paddlers. If it sells paddlers get the coach they want at the price they want. If it doesn't sell it won't run. The organizers/coaches can then either lower prices or decide its not worth it to them.

That's the way the system works.

Plus it depends on your paddling style. Unless you're a west coast paddler, a False Creek style stroke camp probably won't help you much.
