I believe it's National Dragon Club at http://www.nationaldragonboat.com/
If Anonymous 12:13AM could list the locations and the organization running them, it would appreciated. Hard to get much out of such subjective qualitative observations without any comparison. |

MCC limited training area?
I think they have a 5km protected water loop, which is more then pretty much all the other sites listed isn't it?
And my practice has never been cancelled there due to rough water like other places |

Sunnyside runs SRS boats so a bit scary unless they've done some major work on them.
The rest of the sites run BUK's which are used by pretty much all festivals including the island, Ottawa, Nationals and GWN. |

Heard Blake's running the show again.
Will we see a return to the GWN / Blake battle error or has everyone grown up? |

I heard that Sunnyside reduced a certain number of boats this year compared to previous years. I'm hoping that they finally got rid of those teak boats and are sticking with BuKs (They have at least one, maybe two) and SRS boats.
Even so, I wonder how Blake will handle the demand for boats before Island. |

Teaks? Yu've got to be kidding. You obviously have been out of dragonboating for a LONG time. The last time Sunnyside had teaks was at least, what, 7 years ago? |

It might be fun to paddle in one of those original teaks again. Kinda nostalgic.
Speaking of boats. Who's Boat and Home? According to the latest IDBF info they are listed as an official boat builder from Canada? |

| Expanded swimming area | February 4 2009, 9:53 AM |
Noticed the other day a story regarding the City's attempt this upcoming summer to try to keep the beach/swimming area at Sunnyside as a "Blue flag" beach. From this I take it that the City is attempting to keep the beach open as much as possible by installing some form of netting to try to prevent all the 'crap' from the Humber from polluting the swimming/beach area. I then presume this will have a significant impact on where we will be able to practice. Does anyone have any details? |

| Re: Who runs dragon boating at Sunnyside ? | February 4 2009, 10:52 AM |
The city is considering installing a semi-permiable membrain around an area of water of the beach. A pump will pump water out of the enclosed area , new water will enter the area through the membrain which will fillter out enough contaminaints to keep the water inside the membrain swimming quality.
Don't count on it working much , fine membrains plug up quickly , coarser pored membrains are ineffective. |

I am not sure what the above 2 entries means. Are we going to lose a piece of practice area to these membranes? Is TCBA/Sunnyside/NDBC aware of this? Do they have a response? |

Yes it would be nice to hear something from them regarding this issue. Also just wondering if anyone has been assigned their practice times at Sunnyside yet? Been waiting close to a month for them to get back to me... |

Yes, I received confirmation of my team's practice times this past week. Bookings only opened on Jan 15th, how are you waiting for a month? |

misinformation abounds on the forum again.
boats were wood, but not the old teak ones.
membrane? in the water? do you even know how long it takes to get an environmental impact assessment for something like this?
practices... be prepared for fast talk and not much action. less boats, less options.

Ironically, more 'disinformation' from another anon. source claiming to have the correct info. The old boats are fibreglas with a bit of wood trim. They're good for resistance training and planting flowers, but are not wood. |

u ever cut one in half? until then, don't write about what you don't know. of course they have fiberglass. and even BUKs have wood at points. all i was saying is the Cowan boats at sunnyside were NOT teak.
and the city may be considering a membrane, but in 2000-2005 the City was considering bidding on the Expo 2015. Ya, that didn't happen either.

You know why i know this? cuz i know more than you about dragon boat in Toronto. |

I'll bet I know more. Cowan and Voyageur boats. Balsa wood core with fibreglass exterior and interior. Wood cap rail and wood seats.
Balsa wood is light but acts like a sponge when water seeps in so not a very wise building method for dragon boats. |

"Balsa wood is light but acts like a sponge when water seeps in so not a very wise building method for dragon boats."
Funny, teah also soaks up water. They used to count on it when making traditional dragon boats, it stopped them from leaking. Nothing worse than a dry, leaky teak boat. Unless of course it's a dry, leaky teak boat full of spiders.
shudder
spiders!

Blake Vs kerkman. I like that. Right now Kerkman is dominant in Toronto. The Island used his boats and services last summer. If Blake takes control of the island back from Kerkman, that will be a huge accomplishment. |

Blake isn't out of the minors yet.
I will give him credit as a good paddler and coach, but it is not as if he wasn't involved in the decline of Sunnyside over the past few years as a board member. Why would it be any different now? |

I did hear that as well. This is a great thing for Sunnyside! It looks like Blake has a pretty good handle on things for the 2009 season as he's working at this full time now. |
