Light tailwind with tide coming in with the boats, but still an impressive race. Their form appears to be almost perfect. |

Until someone beats them FCRCC over 500m they've got to be considered the fastest crew in the country at that distance. |

Is that different than the the Sydeny team? Did the team that went to Sydney come from one club? |

Actually it is all FCRCC paddlers racing premier mixed in Prague except for 1 female that was asked to join the team .The premier mens team is combining paddlers from all over for Prague .
The final for FCRCC mixed in Alcan today was the fastest 500 ever by a mixed crew and more than likely any crew in an Alcan event w/ a 1:47.00 flat .There was a tailwind this time but still a very very fast time .The men's open winning time was a 1.48 something which was run right after the mixed final, and that was by a very very stacked crew out of Portland (USA) w/ some of the best outrigger paddlers from all over the west coast of N.America who combined and were determined to finally beat FCRCC men who turned a 1.49 something to their winning 1.48 something .This says alot for their mixed crew when they can turn faster times then the mens heats .
I would think FCRCC mixed is going to do very well in Prague |

Jetstart got a 1:59 in the same heat...out east they would be in the 2:06-2:09 range. If you applied that to false creek their time would be in the 1:54-1:57 range - still very impressive. |

They could not have been that stacked if they didn't beat the mixed time but anyway who was in there of notable outrigger paddlers? Were the top US outrigger guys like Danny Ching or other guys from SoCal in there? Or how about imports from Hawaii? |

Shows a lot of class, instead of them being seen as a regular club crew. |

Awesome video of Turn 2 in the "Guts and Glory" race at Alcan this past weekend.
Way to go, you west coast patchouli sniffers, you're keeping the Ben Hur spirit alive with this one! (and I mean that as a compliment)

It starts out normal enough, but keep watching. Just gets better and better. |

the drummer hanging off the front was the Pemberton Team w/ Hugh Fishcer ( former Olympic Gold Medalist ) steering and the last 2 boats in the Video was the US Comp A team Kai Ikaika # 7 and FCRCC - Team Canada in boat #8 who eventually caught them winning the 2000 by 10 seconds over Kai who was second |

What's great is that in a future 2000-meter race, some drummer is going to try this without practicing it first and fall in!! |

At the CCWC, drummers were ordered to stay seated at all times. I doubt they'd be allowed to get up and hang to one side like that in a santioned DBC race. |

No , he is the coach for the team and he also coaches the Layom Eagles ( spelling ? ) who are past world champions in junior at the worlds . Hugh also won his division at the 2008 World outrigger sprint championships in oc1 .
I think he just loves to steer and this is the last guy you want to be beside in a 500 as he is 1 of the best washriders out there and known to come right over into your lane to get on your wash ,its quite humorous to watch how far he will push the lane officials before they call him for it .
I think last year at Alcan they told him 3 times to get back into his lane as he was in FCRCC's lane on trying to get on their wash and FCRCC knew he was going to do it so they moved over to the extreme inside of their lane but hugh still came over and pretty much into the middle of FCRCC's lane ,funniest thing I have ever seen |

I'm thinking that this race is a rarity in that there seems to be only one buoy at the turn, allowing for that team's super-tight move around it. Most 2000-meter races have much wider turns (with three buoys), so I'm not sure if her strategy would help in a more normal 2000-meter was. Great to watch, though!! |

| watch the video again | June 23 2009, 1:16 PM |
One reason the Pemberton team gained so many places in that turn is because ahead of them, one of the crews pushed the turn really wide, going waaaaay off camera. Then Permberton comes into frame and practically stops the boat on their turn. The other boats then return from wherever-the-hell they were and rejoin the race. The Pemberton turn was good in that it kept them out of the fracas, but it really killed their speed. I'm not sure that it's the best stragety in most situations.
I love the pile-on that happens later. It reminded me of the car chase from the Blues Brothers movie. |

The drummer's butt hits the buoy hard!! Now that's cutting it close.

I, too, was wondering if the tight turn slowed them down too much. But I don't think so. They came into that turn dead even with the #6 boat. By the time they got back to top speed, they are two BOAT LENGTHS ahead of the #6 boat!! Yes, the #6 boat went too wide, but you can't argue with two boat-lengths. |

Boat 7 that comes into the picture at the 1min mark makes a GREAT turn. Nice and sharp but also maintains boat speed. |

boat 7 was Kai followed by boat 8 FCRCC " team canada " who spikes at the front and ended up winning the event by 10 seconds over Kai I believe .I think they had a 9:13 |

Yes there were some very good paddlers like Alan Goto and Laci Budjos some canadian national team members and former members also some National team members from the US national team . Do you want me to list the entire crew ?
Sure, it would be interesting to see who was on the crew that finally knocked off False Creek in their own backyard. Also why were Canadian national teamers helping out an American based crew??? |

| Re: Out West - Day 1 | June 24 2009, 12:42 AM |
It has always be a fun rivalry between FCRCC & Kai and most years Kai shows up w/ not quite enough but this year they decided to go big and deliver useing whoever they could muster and so be it that some canadian national team members jumped on to help them out ,FCRCC enjoys having this type of challenge thrown at them and this time it paid off for Kai .
Sometimes you need a shake up to make you even better and give them a taste of what they will come upon in Prague .The race was worth every penny for FCRCC . This mens team is not the true one that will be in Prague but an even stronger mens team will be there as they combine w/ the eastern guys |

An extra effort was made to scrub the boats clean this year. Not sure if that contributed to the faster than usual times. Recent dredging activity may also have contributed to really strange currents running along the usual alcan course during the tide changes.
