2009 Canadian Nationals (Club Crews Race Off)June 25 2009 at 11:59 AM | Anonymous |
| So who's going for which classes and who is favored for the 5 sanctions in each?
For example in mixed, I'm pretty sure that Mayfair, Beasts and FCRCC will not be there due to the worlds so Premier Mixed will likely be a crazy wide open affair.
Is there anywhere to see who has registered so far for each class so we can start playing with it? Is anyone coming from out West? |

I would also add Chaos and perhaps Jetstart to that list too. |

No chaos or jetstart at Nationals. They're not DBC sanctioned crews.
It looks like the GWN Sport Regatta is going to be the real big festival this year with Mayfair, beasts, chiros, all attending.
Too bad that we now have to wear lifejackets due to a couple non-DBC sanctioned crews wanting to take part without being part of DBC. |

Not sure where the above poster is getting his information from.
According to teamchaos.ca, Team Chaos ARE going to the Nationals. |

Has Chaos done 2 qualifiers this year? I guess that they're going to race Nationals, but don't care about the club crew sanctions? |

According to the team website, they'll do Sport Regatta and Woodstock, both of which are Qualifiers. |

Amazing at how often people run their mouths on this forum. Chaos and Jetstart for that matter have the whole season to do 2 qualifiers. |

We should start another thread for the GWN Sports Regatta. Agreed that this will be a high calibre event, but this thread is for the Nationals.
I also agree that if we have to wear life jackets for that reason then that's stupid. Let the teams that don't want to get sanctioned wear them and the rest of us not have to like it should be. It's their choice.
That said we also better at least be able to wear inflatables then. I can't wait to see Beasts and FCRCC wearing festival jackets because they didn't bother to pack theirs for the flights (Although I guess Beasts could be driving).
As for the Nationals, from the list posted just above, that will be quite the dogfight for the top 5 spots. Will be a very interesting race-off. |

It's only a short 24 hour drive from Halifax to Toronto. |

Part of the selling point to become a DBC registered team was to participate in sport regattas where PFDs are not necessary. If my team is forced to wear PFDs then I will be asking for a part of our DBC membership fees back. |

No Hydro at Nationals as they are not interested in going to Asia as many of the guys just came back from there with RTF
They are taken it easy this year and the results show.
Scary though if they actually practiced with a full boat or more than 1 1/2 times a week.
Look at Fish they are flying with 4 practices...hope they can keep it up and not burn out!
August will tell the story!
So many talented true dragon boaters in Ontario and Quebec. |

Many of us are looking forward to putting Fish back in their place. Way too much ego for half a season's worth of decent paddling. |

No need to tar all of Big Fish with the same brush. Most of them are great people. |

"Many of us are looking forward to putting Fish back in their place. Way too much ego for half a season's worth of decent paddling."
Most of us are looking forward on focusing on racing the best that we can and not worrying about what other teams are doing because those who motivation primarily comes from beating others is one that will never ever win anything meaningful in this life on and off the water. |

Love this B.S. I've done great on and off the water. Likely better than the majority of the people in DB. It's a matter of different sources of motivation. You draw yours from the "little engine that could" mentality. Mine is drawn from beating others. Ask Michael Jordan whether he simply wants to do his best or whether he wants to beat everyone else. I think he's pretty successful on and off the basketball court. |

Man this will always continue and never end. Michael Jordan was a success on the court but beyond the celebrity, marketing and the hype:
(A) He also has a serious gambling problem and he's admitted that his " drive to win is so great I just step over that line." http://www.contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/jordans%20gambling%20shame)
(B)His family is broken http://www.usatoday.com/sports/nba/jordan/2002-01-07-wife.htm)
And my final statement may not apply to Jordan, but a lot of people who flash around their wealth or try to live beyond their means and finance their lifestyle through debt - it's all smoke and mirrors. And those who are so extrinsically motivated and focused on others - generally lose anyway.
Now bringing it back to dragonboat, if you talk to Jim Farintosh for example, he wants his crews to be the best, but he doesn't go around trying to beat everyone. He sticks to his guns, stays true to his philosophy and ideas (which he is more than willing to share to those who ask) - and the winning comes as a product of focusing on what he can control (his team) and not what others are doing. Others may provide additional motivation but beating others is not the focus of what he and most other TRULY successful people are like - yet he's the one always winning out east.

Just noticed that it appears as though the GWN Sports regatta teams have been seeded into their lanes by their perceived rankings. IE. Perceived better teams all got the same favorable lane. Who actually gets to decide this is a problem all by itself, but the fact that it's still even being done since way back at the first couple race offs is beyond me.
Does anyone know how the lanes will be assigned for this event? Will Montreal be allowed to put their pet teams in preferred lanes like they did the last time the race off was held there? Of course this is the same thing that has happened wherever the race offs have been held so it is not just a poke at Montreal.
When will we learn that before a race takes place, YOU DON'T KNOW WHO IS GOING TO WIN. |

At least in Montreal if they seed the "perceived" top teams in lanes 3/4 or maybe even 2/3/4 then you all pretty much have a fair chance and really only having fast teams in your heat will make much difference.
I sure would hate to train my butt off and find out you get lane 6 for your first race and spend the rest of the weekend trying to fight your way back out. | |
