Hey GWN,
Please confirm the regatta is going ahead despite the strike since all permits are cancelled, or enlighten us to your alternate plans.

What about parking? Last I heard, both Sunnyside lots are still being used as garbage dumps.

Great, so you are planning on meeting your contractual obligation to provide us with an event after we have already paid you our non-refundable entry fees, goody for you.

Now, as it appears that the strike will be continuing into the unknown future, where are you planning on locating the "sport" regatta? Presumably outside of Toronto, so this means: Pickering (great lane situation there - although not a problem as you are not a true Sport Regatta), Welland (although an option I think with the situation between GWN and the Welland group I think this unlikely), Stouffville (can it be arranged in time?), Outer Harbour (does the strike affect this location too?) are there any other possibilities?

Its about time that GWN actually pro-actively communicated with its client base. How about updating your web site with the most utd info. I really am not concerned with you guys trying to look good by giving the right to play group $5/paddler as as donation. How about you drop our fees by $5/paddler and then give your donation.

Maybe you should call them with your concerns as they suggested.

Maybe they should proactively tell us what's going on instead of putting the onus on us.

I think they have:

"We have been working with the appropriate parties and plan to move forward with the event."

Unless you are trying to find a deeper meaning, it sounds like they have made arrangements. No mention of a new venue, no mention of cancellation.

Do you know more?

Maybe you need to speak GWNese. Nowhere do they state that they are still planning on holding at Marilyn Bell. Just that they are working with the appropriate parties and that they plan to move forward. Learn to read what isn't there. GWN did not say that they are working with Toronto Officials to try to keep the location the same. In fact they did not mention whom these parties where at all. For all we know they could be talking with themselves.

Pride week wasn't canceled (not that there is anything wrong with that). The Toronto Honda Indy is on. Carribana.....Taste of the Danforth.....The Santa Claus Parade.....all appear to be going ahead.

Granted certain events have been given special permission to continue during this civic unrest. However all of the events you mentioned above have huge economic impact to the city - in most cases with either tens of thousands of spectators or even hundreds of thousands, with the huge cash spin-off in the Millions that that creates. I would love it if dragonboat had the same appeal but as it doesn't Mike and the gang at GWN really don't have the same ammunition with the City that a Carribana or Pride official does, now does he?

Does anyone know of any similar events that have been canceled?

There are charity runs, bike rides, 10k's, etc going on almost every weekend all summer in Toronto.

This is hilarious. They didn't say anything about moving the event because they don't plan on moving it. I'm sure if they move it they will let it be known.

They also didn't say anything about laser guided missiles. Maybe we should speculate about that?

I heard they were installing the missiles on the keel of lane 4 boats. Will that effect wash riding by lanes 3 and 5?

Any chance they can point those missiles in the general directions of CUPE headquarters?

Heads up

From the GWN website:

Toronto Strike Update

At this time, working with the appropriate parties, the GWN Sport Regatta will continue as planned. We look forward to a tremendous day of racing at Marilyn Bell Park.

Much has been made of the re-match between 2 of top 3 teams in the country as they meet for the only time this season. Along with many of the top 10 teams set to race, the action will be exciting.

They didn't update their website until after the bitchin'. And GWN responded to this thread, so they are listening at the very least.

Anyone know if the Santa Claus parade is still on? It's going to be a long strike.

There are NO updates on the website. Why is Santa keeping us in the dark. wink.gif

Santa is on hold. Depends on whether he can get Federal funding. Does the Santa parade count as a "pro-life" or "pro-family" event???
