Re: Pickering Results

June 2 2012, 8:41 PM

Overall result: Slipstream 1, Verdun 2, Warriors 3. That was the order for the 2 km... all three crews within 1 second for the 2 km. 500 final finished in lane sequence (i.e. lane 6 1st, lane 5 2nd, ... lane 1 6th.

Cool weather, as per usual, but no real rain. Warmed up nicely in time for the post race beer tent celebrations.

Good to see close racing, and the camaraderie between the crews... real life is much nicer than the trash talk you see on the forum.

Special thanks to Verdun for traveling to Pickering. It looks like there will be some good Canadian crews in Hong Kong.

Re: Pickering Results

Conditions made the starts a nightmare. Many races were decisively won/lost at the start, with teams caught trying to position their boats when the barely audible gun went off.

In my 2nd race (rec division) the other crews got a 4 seat jump on us at the start when the gun went off while we were drawing to align. Not the starter's fault as our drummer should have signalled, but just mentioning it to note that times may not be an accurate indicator of the capability of the crews in many races.

Re: Pickering Results

June 3 2012, 10:26 AM

The 500 m final results reflected lane order. After the heats, Slipstream was seeded first (way ahead of everyone), and Warriors were seeded fourth for the semis.

Warriors lost to Slipstream in the 1 and 4 seed semi. That put the warriors in lane 3 for the 500 final, and they finished 4th. Warriors did have the 2nd fastest time in the semis (i.e. the other heat was slower), but the final seeding is based on position, not time.

All 4 of those top crews were closer than I expected... the Slipstream dominance in the heats may have reflected differences in boats (i.e. 3 seconds ahead of everyone else), or it may be that Slipstream just didn't execute as well in the other races. Having 3 boats within a second in the 2 km was amazing... I'm sure Verdun and the Warriors are all thinking of the little things they could have done differently to win the race.

Re: Pickering Results

June 3 2012, 11:04 AM

My thoughts:

- Slipstream is unequivocally a tier above verdun, mayfair and ndrc.

- Slipstream dominated every race, except the 200m sprint where Mayfair managed to pull off an incredible first place 200m out of lane 3, beating out slip in lane 6, verdun in 5 and ndrc in 4

- Mayfair collected enough points in the 200m to bump ndrc out of third, but otherwise mayfair looked like they were the 4th ranked crew out of the pack

- Storm (former SRP) makes a great debut - If they stick together good things may come

- CSDC no longer a podium contending crew like they were in years prior (they still are within their division of course)

- Verdun is a great bunch and great racers and everyone is thankful they made the trek to this event

Re: Pickering Results

There is no Mayfair...it was OHDBC Goodlife Warriors.

"Slipstream is unequivocally a tier above verdun, mayfair and ndrc. " how do you figure that when Warriors beat Slipstream in the 200 and Verdun/Slipstream/Warriors were all within one second of each other in the 2K?

With lane bias, unfair starts, there was no one team dominating another. It'll be good racing in Hong Kong.

Re: Pickering Results

June 3 2012, 3:23 PM

To me a "tier above" would be a 4 second gap. When you can beat a team by a boatlength, that's being at another level. Under 1 second = peers, 1-2 seconds consistently = superior, and a boatlength = dominance / the next level.

Just my opinon.

re: 1:33....each team only raced five races at pickering...and btw, mayfair wasn't paddling at pickering.

3:23 has good points.

great to have verdun show up. great sportsmanship from all the teams.

Mayfair hasn't paddled in years.
The last few years were a mixture of Jim's hand picked Senior Canada paddlers
or the Warriors.

Spoonnoops, great videos as always! Thank you! The community appreciates ur efforts no doubt.

I especially like the one of the 2Km.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGuFgWQ-9kc&feature=youtube_gdata_player

At the start, It really shows who is committed to fair racing, and who in in blatant disregard of the rules and respect for thier fellow competitors.... It's no wonder some land themselves with the "cheaters" tag.

At the end of the day, ultimate responsibility falls to the pdbc officials to enforce the rules... Which in this case they didn't. At the captains meeting it was made clear that not coming to a complete stop at the starting line (nevermind being behind it) would result in a time penalty...

Integrity please pdbc!

The starts were BRUTAL. Boats were drifting all over the place. Not entirely the officials fault as conditions sucked, as usual, but it seemed that after a certain amount of time the officials didn't care if the boats were even. They just let them go.

Re: Pickering Results

What is obvious from Pickering is that Ontario, Quebec, and Canada will be very well represented in Hong Kong. We are all very fortunate to have each other to race against as it will only benefit everyone's preparation prior to the big event in Hong Kong.

Add Philly, Chicago and DCH to the mix and North America will have 7 quality mixed teams competing against other solid crews from across the world.

And there are only 6 lanes in each A final.

definately some good drfting starts...especially on the 2km's. still good racing, but can never be sure how close it would be if held.

No offence but the WORLD does NOT care about MIXED teams
OPEN & WOMEN teams better be ready in Hong Kong

And mixed teams better not be ready?

And no worries, I don't take offence, nor do I take offense if that it was you meant. I wish I knew where you were posting from, so I could determine whether or not it is possible for me to make you look bad in your native language too.

Well 'offense' is the right spelling in North America, so I suppose you learned English from a Brit? Are you an Australian with nothing better to do at dawn? I would really be interested to look you in the eye and pummel you down in HK in a dark alley way.

Watching the 2km starts was beyond PAINFUL!!!!! The starter should be fired and why is the starter standing on shore and yelling directions for who has overlap? Was there a lack of chase boats?

With the amount of money we pay for such a crappy race you think they could afford a rental. Seriously considering not going next year. Crappy course marking, crappy officials, crappy lanes and always crappy conditions. Why do we bother?

BTW, I am going to complain about your spelling. When did the word losers become loosers? I see this mistake so often. Even spell check can't help the retards our education system are turning out.

Really, well let's see what they say on their site.

"The Pickering Dragon Boat Club is proud to host one of Ontarios most competitive annual regattas"

Dragon Boat Canada Sanctioned Regatta
Dragon Boat Canada certified officiating crew

June 9th 12:23. Saw your post. Breaking out the cheese and crackers to go with your wine. I guess you are looking for the indoor version of dragon boat. You know where the conditions are always perfect, so the lane markers dont get swept away by the storm the day before and the strong winds we faced on that day. Dont's worry the city of pickering is raising $ to build i giant dome over the bay just so we dont have to here you prissy little T.O. folks cry next year. As for the officials. Starter could have used a little work. I'll give you that. However most of the other officals are the ones who represent canada on the world stage. They do a fine job.
Oh and i know you're going to attack my spelling so heres a word scramble for ya.

I will gladly stay out of Pickering. Scarborough is the armpit of the GTA but Pickering is definitely the butt hole.

What a waste of time. Pickering is NOT one of Ontario's most competetive regattas because the course is absolute ***** and the people running it are re-tards.

Don't worry teams will opt out for other festivals.
You and the other community teams can stay :P

No excuses for a poorly run festival when you charge such an expensive entrance fee.
