Re: 2012 Canadian Nationals @ Montreal

June 29 2012, 2:51 AM

If it's based on last year's results then I'd rank it like this

Premier Mixed
1. SLIPSTREAM
...
2. ONE WEST
3. WARRIORS
4. VERDUN ADRENALINE
5. NDRC PREMIER
6. BMO

Reason being that One West raced photo finishes with False Creek all year round and have probably beefed up their team. False Creek would've ranked higher on mixed if they didn't screw up their 200m semi because of the false start.

Slipstream by 1 second with the rest fractions apart.

June 29 2012, 1:50 PM

Premier Mixed
1. Warriors
2. One West

5. ...

Who else is going? Hammerheads? Storm? CSDC? What about NDRC Jr.?

Re: 2012 Canadian Nationals @ Montreal

July 10 2012, 3:33 PM

NDRC will only be showing up for their Coronation Ceremony. They WILL NOT be racing.

Protocol regarding NDRC's appearance at Nationals:

1. Autograph signing will be limited to the first 100 requests. This will be strictly enforced. No exceptions.

2. All NDRC paddlers are to be addressed as "Your Majesty" or "Champion of the World", only.

3. No other paddler is to make direct eye contact with an NDRC paddler and/or representative, at any time, nor are they to have any sort of physical contact with an NDRC paddler and/or representative, at any time.

4. All requests for inspirational team talks from members of NDRC are to be directed to a Dragon Boat Canada (DBC) representative. Direct contact with any NDRC paddler regarding this matter is strictly forbidden.

5. The NDRC Coronation Ceremony will take place at 2:00pm on Saturday, July 28th in the Awards . All registered paddlers MUST be present for this Ceremony. Absent paddlers will have their DBC membership revoked unless otherwise excused from attending by an official DBC representative.

6. The violation of any of the above listed items (1 thru 5) will result in immediate disqualification from the Canadian National Championships, expulsion from the Olympic Basin grounds and revocation of the violator's DBC membership.

Thank you.

5)WArriors

Final B
hammerheads, bmo, mtl mix, storm (in no particular order)

pretty much the same results as per welland.

Just posted today on the DBC facebook page:

This year we are introducing a new service for all registered crews. If you or another crew leader wishes to receive instantaneous updates for marshaling and race updates on your mobile devices through SMS Text Notifications, then complete the following information located at:http://bit.ly/DBCNationals2012

Nice idea, assuming that they would also still have announcements over the PA system. But this is definitely an added feature.

^^ Are you a complete moron? This feature only informs you when your team is marshalling, like a PA system normally would. These apps for smart phones are pretty cool but DBC does not have access to anything that will automatically whisk you off to the marshalling area so you don't have to bother walking.

You are dumb. Sigh.

You must be the negative bust guy. Don't really know what your point is. Lots of teams still traveling after hong kong so weaker field, great for crews that normally aren't podium contenders. These things happen.

I'm not sure what point you're making here. The "teams are better this time round" or "teams still travelling after hong kong so weaker field". Better or weaker? Make up your mind.

I'm saying weaker field, nowhere near the calibre of the last Montreal Nationals in 2009. Someone else said it was about the same so I called bullsh!t, that's all. When someone makes a ridiculous statement, I call bullsh!t. It's a service I provide. You're welcome.

That said I wish all the teams attending this year good luck.

Gotta say though, this would have been a excellent opportunity for a non-CCWC team like the Hammerheads or Jetstart to scoop a National Championship. Just RIPE for the taking.

Re: 2012 Canadian Nationals @ Montreal

July 26 2012, 10:19 AM

Back in 2009 Verdun was 1st, sudbury 2nd and someone else third. No mayfair, beasts or false creek back in 2009 either.

2012 features a best of 22dragons (verdun/bmo combo) and one west plus some other decent mixed crews. So sorry ******** guy, this field is better than the 2009 one.

Anonymous

Re: 2012 Canadian Nationals @ Montreal

July 26 2012, 10:28 AM

Must be a 22 dragons guy (likely BMO) posting that. This field sucks. 2009 was much better. Combo teams are rarely that good compared to teams who train together. 2009 had Verdun, Sudbury, SRP, Big Fish, Hanalei, a stacked 3R team, and a few others. It's not even close.

Anonymous

still calling it b.s.

July 26 2012, 10:51 AM

Here were the top 15 from 2009

EDBRC Mixed Premiere Mixed
SRP Premiere Mixed
Mofos Premiere Mixed
Half Row Premiere Mixed
Les Pics Bois Premiere Mixed
Verdun Adrenaline Premiere Mixed
Verdun Express Premiere Mixed
Commerce Court Health Centre Premiere Mixed
Sudden Impact Black Premiere Mixed
Phoenix ETS - Fireball Premiere Mixed
Team Chiro Premiere Mixed
Hanalei Premiere Mixed
Montreal Mix Premiere Mixed
Adrenaline Mixte Premiere Mixed
BMO Premiere Mixed

So I disagree that the 2012 is more competitive, or even the same. A throw-together of BMO/Verdun and one more team from the Vancouver does not bring it up to the same standard. 2009 was a CCWC qualifying year, and very competitive even in the absence of Mayfair or Beasts. Verdun Adrenaline and SCC were hammer & tongs all weekend. Recall that in 2009 teams like Hanalei, SRP and Big Fish were very competitive at the time as well, despite falling off the radar in recent years.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but 2009 > 2012 by a long shot.

This year's field has some great speed, just not a lot of depth. After 22D and one west, field drops off.

Looks like the west still cannot compete against us out east. For all the hype, One West was not any better (some would say less competitive) than FCRCC. A throw together team beats the best that the west can send. Hope the west is embarrassed, I would.

Guess the west will win next year since it is in their backyard and none of us will be attending. Why is it that the west can only win when it is out west? Can't they send a team that can take us on?

The 22d team was hardly a throw together team. Their men's and women's programs were randomly split up into verdun and bmo. Creating a new mixed crew out of athletes that share a common philosophy and training program is easy. The 22d club is a pretty tight club compared to those in TO

They set a few basin records for mixed crews. one west is very fast, the 22d crew was just faster.

IMO it's a bit hollow competing at nationals during non-ccwc qualifying years because if you're not the top crews in the country... only the top of the crews that attended.

Why does it suck? This is the way clubs should operate. NDC dominated in 2011 with Slipstream as the Premier Crew and CSDC as the Senior Crew. Why not select the best paddlers available within a broader club scope in order to put the best boats possible on the water? Makes total sense to me and it is within DBC rules.

Re: 2012 Canadian Nationals @ Montreal

July 31 2012, 2:23 PM

Although that is the spirit of the club structure, I totally agree. Take a look at Vancouver. FCRCC crushed everyone with ease for a very long time because it cornered the market on all good paddlers for a very long time. After FCRCC there was a big drop off in talent and their main challengers were FCRCC 2. One West made the big move up last year but as we can see from these nationals they still aren't "that" good. I prefer the Central region's system of smaller clubs who can rise up and challenge. Over the years we've seen Imps, Wong's, X-Paddling, MCC, Huron Kayak, Madawaska, Mayfair, Sudbury, Scotia Rouge, Slipstream and Verdun all lay claim to title of best overall. With really strong teams below them all pushing to be the "next one". Teams like Big Fish, Hammerheads, SRP/Piranhas, NDRC, CSDC, BMO Montreal and Hydrophobic.

Give me the central region's style any day. This is the Mecca of dragonboating. We're all as good as we are now because of the competition.

I like the use of larger club structures for the formation of crews in the more specific racing classes like Senior, or Unisex. But I prefer it when Premiere Mixed crews can keep some pride in their own teams and race indpendently.

Toronto as Mecca is a bit much (dude, are you trying to get us hated?) but we do have a good variety of crews here and most pefer to race independently when they could easily have formed "supercrews" instead.

Really?

Premier Mixed CCWC Qualifiers from last year:
Slipstream ~25 members
Mayfair ~25 members
Verdun (sorry I dunno)
FCRCC (Huge)
NDRC (~30 members)

The club system in Ontario is a team that calls itself a club. They may have a sister crew to form unisex teams with (NDC with Jetstart and NDRC with New College) but these "clubs" are drawing from large pools to make their roster.

The crew system of toronto is not better...

top crews like mayfair build their crews by taking top paddlers from other crews.

The point is, paddlers need to be developed somewhere. In Toronto it starts paddlers moving from weaker crews to stronger crews. No beginners starts on Mayfair.

Essentially the same thing that happens in a large club like 22dragons.

Re: 2012 Canadian Nationals @ Montreal

July 31 2012, 11:37 PM

I agree that beginners can't start on Mayfair, but when did we all decide that making their crew and Slipstream need to represent the pinnacle of dragon boat paddling ability?

What, are they too good for having to suffer the difficulties (like crew retention) and ignominy (actually losing a race or not winning a medal...or gasp not making the A final) of rebuilding that every other crew has to go through?

Going to use Big Fish as an example (don't hate): a top notch crew a couple of seasons ago but couldn't make the cut for CCWCs. Fast forward to 2012, most of their best, fittest athletes are on which crews I wonder? Maybe there were other reasons but it doesn't sit well that the 2010 GWN Challenge champions are no longer top 6 contenders just because their best people jumped ship for 'better' crews. That's just reeks of disloyalty to me.

I guess sticking with your team through thick or thin rather than jumping on the winning bandwagon is just for losers...

Re: 2012 Canadian Nationals @ Montreal

August 1 2012, 12:39 AM

Let's get down to the root of why Slipstream and Slipstream Francais (22D) were formed: a collective group of butt hurt paddlers who gave up on their original teams, formed an uber team of butt hurt paddlers who wanted to win and get butt hurt less...which is what happened. They (Slip) ended up becoming the best team in Canada.

The only problem with this team structure, is the people who make up the team are still the same people who Q.U.I.T their original teams. Only difference is they have larger EGOs. Therefore, when a real race like Gong Kong comes along, reality hits. They lose. They start flaming the forum and flooding it with complaints. They realize a year of work went to waste, only to see themselves get pummeled by a more deserving team (NDRC) - which might I add has the right idea of how to build a team (cultivate and keep talent).

Therefore, next year come back to this thread and don't be surprised that I was right about Slipstream losing it's prestige and being overtake by their new and better parasite team 22dragons (Slipstream French Chapter). The team will fall apart because the quitters that comprise it will join other crews...or end up like Mayfair - irrelevant.

What makes NDRC more deserving than Slipstream? They're both top notch teams and one just came out on top. And what's wrong with people quitting their teams to join others? Obviously the teams they were on did not do it for them. Would you rather have everyone quit than join a team that fits their ideals better? I'm pretty sure most people don't just quit teams because other teams are faster. There's usually more behind that. Teams all come and go. It's part of the sport.

You sound more butt hurt than the teams you are flaming. It's always the fastest teams that raise the level of the sport overall, so it's good that we have the Slipstreams for everyone else to chase and perhaps eventually surpass.

The big difference here is that unlike Slipstream, or Mayfair: 22Dragons is a club with walls, a training facility, boats and hundreds of people. From one year to the next the A team may change entirely, but it will always be there and always be the best of what the club has to offer.

The bottom line is the elite want to be together. The best are pumped for this team, and those that didn't make it are crying for BMO, Verdun to come back.

Re: 2012 Canadian Nationals @ Montreal

August 1 2012, 8:37 AM

Now now people... Calm down everyone!

Who here has NEVER left a team to go to another that suits their needs more????

All top teams are made from recruiting paddlers that come from different teams but want something more after a few years of learning the sport and getting stronger. The only difference at 22D is that we called ourselves "22 Dragons "A" instead of sending all those paddlers under the Verdun or BMO banner.

Angry posts like the few previous ones always make me smile because when you are actually AT the competition, in this case the Nationals, you always feel like there is great interaction with the opposing teams might it be Slipstream/Ocean1 last year or this year 22D and One West. I always see these guys as being very respectful and great sports and very much fun to race against wether you win or loose...

Now it would be interesting one day to see who actually hates every team that does well or should I say better than their own??? The fact is, if you want to get better, train hard, look at your teams strength and weakness and do what you need to do to make sure you get better should it be recruiting or get a new coach or get a new training program...

My 2 cents...

""

Well whomever posted the above comment was smack on. Most of paddlers of the "a" team were from Verdun. BMO paddlers didn't want to drop BMO and join Verdun. Ta Daaaaam, create "new team" (22ragons "a"). Now for those that were frustrated not to be in "a" team... ta daaaaam ! create a 22dragons "b" team.
Many of those paddlers were in the same "unisex teams" of 22D. They also wanted to be together for the mixed paddling, thus the 22d mixed teams.
Problem is there will be no competition at all (not even close) for them at any of the Quebec races. They will have to go visit other provinces to get some decent competition, such as slipstream.mayfair, fcrcc, one west, etc. etc.

The way I see it

August 1 2012, 10:47 AM

Bringing the thread back to Nationals.

I was expecting the Montreal open crew win and they did not. Why? Did anyone notice that One West Open had women on it. Now looking at those women (and having talked to some other paddlers) and reviewing the results we can make some interesting observations. First, 22Dragons wins the mixed races but when they go into Open they lose to a team that is "mixed". I am not saying that women should not race open (if they are fast then go for it) but generally accepted norms say that an all male crew should win against a mixed crew (look at the controversy at the Olympic pool with a certain 16 y/o swimmer).

My observations/recommendations for next Nationals:

a. Our Montreal women are the best, they were the difference in winning Premier mixed.
b. Our Montreal men need some more work as they let a "mixed" team beat them.
c. Next time put the Montreal women on the Open team so 22Dragons can win Open also.

Just sayin

LOL. It's a well known fact the Montreal Women are the reason why Verdun wins. This point is probably true with most elite crews since men generally cancel each other out. I've seen this in the past and there is a higher correlation of mixed team success based on the success of the crew's women's team (or number of national team females)

About that comment about One West having their medals tarnish for beating Mahjongg "B" and not Mahjongg "A"... Remember one cannot control who shows up at competitions and so when you win a gold medal, you win it by beating everybody else so in my book, a win is a win!

I am sure One West would have liked to race against the "A" crew but they still won fair and square and they deserve to be called Champions... It's not like they had to beat some community crews, Mahjongg "B" is a pretty decent crew...

"get your numbers right...no way most of the 22D team was verdun, it was about 50/50."

All that tells me is that this team will be sub-optimal. There is a reason why Verdun was faster than BMO. Might as well get the best of the club which SHOULD be mostly Verdun paddlers.

Re: 2012 Canadian Nationals @ Montreal

August 2 2012, 9:08 AM

- 12 from Verdun
- 9 from BMO
- 2 from other teams

Verdun might be faster than BMO but it is very close so it make sense that the team is about 50/50... (look at the results in the past years and you'll see how close it is...)

And yes, I am from BMO but I'm also intelligent enough to read a results sheet and I can also say that yes, Verdun had the upper hand in a lot of competition but are giving them a run for their money so the two teams are really close...

You can only race (and beat) what is put in front of you and that is what One West did. They ARE the Open Champions.

For whatever reason Mahjongg 'A' didn't show up. Are these guys so poorly conditioned that they can't handle CCWCs then Nationals 3 weeks later in their own backyard? No excuse!

One West showed up and won. Can't say the same for a lot of the other so-called top crews in Canada that couldn't handle the volume of racing.

Mahjongg A didnt show up is because they have their reason. You spent a shitload of $ on HK, there may/may not be 'A' paddlers still wandering in Asia. And finally, they can beat you happy.gif

How do you know they can beat me? They didn't have the fortitude to show up in their own backyard. No excuse!

Simple, cause I know for sure you arent in One West. No other team in the West can compare to One West Open.

And if you are from Montreal, you must be laughing at yourself because Mahjongg A has been Quebec Cup winner for the past 3 years.

See you at Victoria.

No team, come on FCRCC has beaten them when they show up with a team. For additional teams look at Vancouver results and there are throw together teams that beat One West`s open team.

Next time check your facts, One West is not the best that the west can provide. Good but not the best based on results (and Nationals proves it).

The last time False Creek decided to show up, they lost by 2.5 seconds to One West in the 200.

why is it that the east coast thread always sooooo negative?? why cant we all support each other.. holy s***. dragonboatwest clearly doesnt have this type of negativity within the forums.. you people are clearly talking crap because youre jealous that a good team beat you nor be in a good team to begin with..One West is one of the best teams in canada along with other teams like FCRCC slipstream verdun mayfair etc etc. they train hard before,in between and after work, school, exams etc and to bring them down is just ridiculous. stop bashing and just fricking paddle!!!

Re: 2012 Canadian Nationals @ Montreal

August 3 2012, 9:11 AM

But why enter a race when there's nothing at stake? No team that went to CCWCs has anything to prove by going to Nationals, even if their home city is also the host. Stop using that reason because it's pointless. Teams enter races to face other competitive teams and since there is nothing at stake at the Nationals this year, it makes sense not to go.

You might want to tell that to the Montreal Premier and Senior Women. Both of these crews went to HK but, unlike Mahjongg 'A', they had the guts and determination to compete for the National Title regardless of who else showed up.

Lol. The attacks on Mahjjong are a joke.

Mahjjong alone - not you or any anonymous person on the forum- chooses how to structure their season and which competitions they value the most.

See all of the great Mahjjong paddlers at National Team tryouts in late September. Your former national team teammates look forward to seeing you all again.

I think the One West guys are posting and puffing their chests about their Open crew was because they won....against a B team from the east. Their mixed team expected to romp and couldn't beat a throw together mixed team from the east. You One West open guys should stop talking, Ocean 1, NDRC and Mahjonng A can romp all over Mahjongg B. And no offense to the 22 Dragons mixed crew that went to Nationals, but I think you'd have your hands full with Slipstream, Mayfair and NDRC (can't say Verdun since some of them were on that team).

Also, there are STILL people in Asia right now after CCWC. Some just got back this week. No one cares about Nationals in a non-CCWC qualifying year. Get over it.

Finally the truth comes out

August 4 2012, 7:46 PM

I know quite a few paddlers from Vancouver and the general feeling is that One West are a bunch of kids who have let their heads get too big. I chatted with a number of my friends and not one of them felt bad that One West did not win. They were all happy they lost, not because they are a better team than my friend's teams but because of their attitude.

Everyone referred to last year when this team was so different, gracious when they lost and humble when they won. This year they walk around with attitude. They said the same thing as a previous poster, a few bad apples sure changes the bunch.

One West has nothing to be proud about, Open winning against the B team, yet they keep on posting s**t like you see on facebook. Arrogance does exist out west and we easteners can hope they got a reality check just like the teams here get a reality check.

Again, who hates so much????

I have raced against Slipstream/Ocean1 in Hong Kong, Pickering, 2011 Nationals... These guys are class acts and great sports... Same with One West, I've know a few of them from the National team and the tryouts (the guy standing, Dave tried out and "paddle smacker" Ryan made it to the team) and raced them at Nationals in mixed and I can say these guys are very fun to be around and great sports also...

I am making this comment again because I just don't know what drives "the haters" to publish some stuff like that on the forum... I suspect it's only one or two Anonymous posters that will forever stay anonymous... And oh, now there is also hate on Mahjongg "A" because we didn't go to the Nationals this year... Just get a life! Go paddle and you will have the chance to race these guys and see how they really are! wink.gif
