Currently there are only 4 teams in common between Ottawa and the other ranked regattas. We will need to wait for more regattas before including Ottawa in the rankings in order to see accurate results. Including Ottawa will incorporate some fast teams such as BMO Montreal, BobBlake.ca, Wizards, Montreal Elite Women.
Please let us know if you find errors in the data.
Also, could somebody familiar with the 2012 Pickering results please clarify something for us? There was a team called "Cascades Senior Women" racing in the open division. They are currently the #1 ranked women's team. I would like to confirm that really was a womens crew.
Lastly if anybody can volunteer to enter data for future regattas please give us a shout!
Why is Pickering weighted more heavily than the Island? The variables of severe lane bias, poor conditions etc... should decrease the the relevance of this regatta.

The weight is based on competitiveness.

A bit of miss with Pickering at 1.1 and TIDBRF at 1.0
Look at the top 10 to to top 12, almost identicle with the exception of Verdun. I don't think one team should elevates the entire regatta.
Factor in the known deficiencies of the Pickering racecourse and I think TIDBRF makes a much better baseline.

The one Verdun counts for 0.1
They deserve it. So stop whining.
You even said Top 10. Verdun count of one. therefore 0.1 difference. Gee.

So you're saying that all teams went 10% faster because Verdun was there? Or teams were 10% better, because Verdun was there? Or just that Verdun is so good that any regatta they enter should ranked be 10% higher...because they were there?
All bow to Verdun, "The 10%"
In celebration of this amazing, world improving dragon boat team Unibroue should make a 10% beer called "Y'er-done", because after one of these beers, you're done.
...and you pee 10% faster.

Keep your panties. Once more festivals come out the 0.1 factor will mean less in the grand scheme of things.

Re: 2012 Rankings

The competitive multiplier is strictly based on attendance by top teams. We want to stay away from subjectively assigning weights that would be difficult to agree upon.
The way it works now is as follows: attendance by any of the top 50 teams awards competitive points to a regatta. For example team #1 (Currently Slipstream) gives 50*50 points. Team #2 (Verdun) gives 49*49 points, Team #3 (NDRC) gives 48*48 points, etc. down to team #50 (Durham Razorbacks) giving 1*1 points. The total is then divided by the Center Island competitive points (Center Island acts as the baseline) and clamped between [0.1, 1.5].

A 450m race (Milton) should not be included in evaluating 500m distance races, similar to why 200m races are not extrapolated into 500m results.

Actually all races are included. 100, 200, 450, 500, 2000, etc

^ Say what? The title of the results page says "2012 500m rankings". having any other race distance included on this page is only skewing the results.

Cascades has a Senior Women team and Premier women team...and there are a few paddlers on both. Because of this, they couldn't compete in the same 'catagory' at regattas as they wouldn't have enough paddlers if they raced head to head. For this reason, Cascades Senior Women raced in Open at Pickering and Cascades Premier Women raced in Women's Sport.

@3:56 AM - If you start discrediting distances like 200m, 450m (because the course had to shorten) then you need to seriously consider taking out 500m races with really strong headwind/tailwinds. A 500m course with a strong headwind can be the same as a 450m course with a strong tailwind.
I don't get it either. It keeps flipping to 2012. What was your point?

It works!

It's kinda cool, I substituted Mayfair Warriors for Big Fish, punched 2010, and it shows all the teams they beat that beat Manayunk.
I love it.
Who comes up with stuff?
The exact readout is as follows:
COMMON OPPONENTS ANALYSIS
TEAMS THAT MAYFAIR WARRIORS LOST TO THAT MANAYUNK BEAT
None
TEAMS THAT MANAYUNK LOST TO THAT MAYFAIR WARRIORS BEAT
BIG FISH
SHOCKWAVE
UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO PADDLING CLUB
Pretty cool, you just put in your fantasy teams, and, WahLa!
Thanks Matt, Sara and Mofo's! Not sure where you guys find the time to do this with a baby, but it's pretty damned cool.

I'm glad somebody liked that feature! We figured with all that race data stored in a database we may as well expose some interesting queries on the website.
The rankings have been updated with Ottawa, MIDBRF, GWN Sport, and the Canadian Nationals. Thanks Peter and Cam for entering the data.
There are several strong additions such as 22 Dragons A/B, One West, DCH
If something looks wrong with your team ranking please take a look at the data we used from The Race Archive and let us know if there is a mistake with the data.
To address an earlier comment although Milton was 50m short of a true 500m race the rankings algorithm will adjust those race times to be slower. How that is done can be read here Methodology

These rankings are so flawed it is ridiculous. For example, DCH is ranked 7th overall in Mixed based on one race with a weight of 0.3. That is just wrong. Many other crews have dropped way down the rankings after a single race ranking by a mediocre club. Time to hit the ignore button.

Well you could use the CCWC results and apply it to the Canadian teams I guess.
But I think it would be cool to use the extrapolation to see where everyone would fit against Shun De, Windsor Arch and Nymburk.
