The House of refuge in Markdale was later called Grey-Owen Lodge and a new building on the site was recently built as is called Grey Gables.
In the past, people who could not afford to take care of themselves or where destitude became wards of the county and where lodged in "the house of refuge". I remember older people calling it the "Poor House"
