DANNY ELLIOTT, NW MOUNTIE

by

I am searching for information on a Danny Elliott who would have been born around 1895 or 1900 in England and was known to have been a Northwest Mountie (a picture of him in uniform on his horse existed with some of the family in NY)and could have been adopted by a Canadian family (cannot prove this). I would appreciate any information that anyone has concerning this. Thanks.

ROBERTSON/ BEATTIE Owen Sound, Annan and Woodford

by

My gggrandfather John BEATTIE (b. 1821) married Annie ROBERTSON who was born in Guelph 30 November 1834. She died in Kemble, Keppel Twp. in 1914, buried in the Annan Cemetery. All I know about her family is that she had a brother Alex ROBERTSON who lived in Woodford.
I have so many brick walls that I thought I would start in another direction, possibly with better luck.

Can't help you directly with your query, but I have an Archie McLean from the Grey County area in Ontario who married a relative, Ema Jane Wickens (1858-?), in 1889 and moved to Ohio. Nothing more for descendants, but have Wickens ancestral info if a connection can be made. Two Archie McLeans from roughly the same area getting married at the same time?

Hoaths in Grey County in 1870's

by

I am looking for information on my g-grandfather. On his immigration records found in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan in 1895 he lists that he was born in Tallingham in Grey County. I have also been told by relatives that he was from Meaford. The only thing I can find is that there is no such place as Tallingham in Grey county and I find no record of a Noble Henry Hoath anywhere in Ontario. On Nobles marriage and death certificates it lists his parents as W and Sarah Hoath and as John and Unknown Hoath. I am at a loss as to where else to look. Any suggestions or if anyone has heard of this family please let me know. Thank you very much. Kelly

Michael B(e)agan of Dornoch, Ontario

by

My great great grandfather is buried in a cemetary in Dornoch, Ontario. I don't know the name of the cemetary. My uncle has visited the gravesite and says the name on the tombstone is Bagan but this could be a spelling mistake as our family name is Beagan. I am looking for anyone who has information on Micheal
B(e)agan who was a farmer in Grey South (sub-district-Normanby)and said he was 66 years of age when the 1871 Census of Ontario was done. He wife was Ann(e)? McParland. Michael was born in north Ireland about 1802? and came to Canada. He and Ann had eight children-Barney, Patrick, james, john, Maurice, Daniel, Elisa and Margaret. Daniel is my great grandfather. Ann was born in south Ireland about 1823 and died in Canada in 1886. I believe she is buried beside Michael and that her marriage to michael may have been her second or third marriage. My family hopes that information about Michael will help us find out who his dad was. His dad stayed in Ireland but we don't know his name. Perhaps someone reading this will have some anecdotal information that will give us more information about Micheal and provide some clue as to where exactly in Ireland did he come from and who his dad might be.
Thank-you

Beagan Family

by

From the book Farmlanes of Bentinck Twp, one Maurice Beagan is buried in St. Paul's Catholic Cemtery. This cemetery is located behind the church in Dornoch. Listing says Maurice Beagan died in 1939. The only other indexed reference to either spelling is a James Beagan who had a business at the Dornoch store site. There is no date given. It says he called it the "Palmer House" after a hotel in Chicago. He did all of the barbering that was done around here at night. During the day he fired the boiler in the sawmill. About 1896 the buildings were destroyed by fire.

Looking for african american greens too

by

Hello:

My name is Tawala Johnson and I am also searching for the african american greens.

My gggrandfather was David Edward Green, he was born on November 21, 1869 in Collingwood, Ontario. He was Methodist.

I found his attestation papers in the Canadian Expeditionary Over-seas Forces, that was on June 30, 1917, he was 47 1/2 yrs. old.

He married my gggrandmother who was white.. Her name was Grace Lavina Graham, they had the following children:

Edna Christina Green-Durnell (My gggrandmother)
Grace Green- Pinch, m. John Edmund Pinch
Irene Green-Collins, m. Fred Collins
Hilda Green-Onstay/Anstay, m. James Anstay
Violet Green-Doak m. Harold Doak (my grandmother is named after her)
Roy Green
Wilbert Green
Norman Green (my great uncle is named after him)

Grace Lavina Graham came from a well to do family and when she married David, she was disowned.

All of her kids were mulatto and all the kids but my gggrandmother chose to pass themselves off as white and marry white men.

I am looking for any information you can give me.

The attestation papers describe David as being dark skinned, no visible marks on him, stood 5'9" and listed his address at box 186, Collingwood, Ontario.

He had grey eyes, if you can help me in anyway, it would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Tawala Johnson

Hallock in Meaford Area

by

William B.Hallock and his brother, Benjamin came to this area from Brockville (Elizabethtown), ONT with the Mallory's prior to the settlement of Meaford. They were residents of Mallory Mills, c 1830. William and wife, Anna Stephenson had 5 children before moving to WI abt 1840.

Benjamin had sons, Benjamin & Caleb for sure. They
stayed in Meaford. These Hallocks need to be identified and tied into parents:
Dow, Walter, b. 1875, Lorenzo, 1877-79, Alfred Dow, Sarah, Frank, Lottie, Junior Ben, George and Clark.
It would seem there are two Hallock families, mine came from Brockville, who are the other and where did they come from?

Usher / Grierson Sydenham c.1850

by

Hello all,

I have recently discovered a connection to Sydenham:
Robert Grierson m. Janet Usher 11 March 1852.

I knew from old documents that Janet and her 3 sisters all went to Canada but this is the first real lead I've had.

I have looked around and managed to find some material online relating to Sydenham, including W. W. Smith's Gazetter and Directory of the County Of Grey for 1865-6, where a Robert Grierson is listed as a magistrate.

I also found Janet & Helen Usher enumerated in the 1851 census in Grey County.

Does anyone else have any tidbits of info that might relate to these people at all?

best wishes,

Mark Usher

Hello Rita - thank you for responding to my query about 'The Irish Block' and it looks like we are definetely related! James Hood would be my Great Grandfather, and yes he had 3 brothers - Robert, William & Thomas - so what does this make us?

My Mother, Ella Mary Gertrude Gibbons (Hood) is the youngest daughter of William A Hood and Julia Mary Hood (Bolger). Her brother John A. Hood started a family tree in 1992 and I am trying to piece it all together. I would really love any information you have about your family & I will pass on any information that I have. Chase family

by

I am looking for a George Chase, brother of James Henry Chase (the latter was born at Uxbridge 22 April 1854.) George had 4 children: Frank, Byron,Carmen, and Iola Millicent (born 1 September, 1895.) The latter is my wife's grandmother. The family were apparently known as the "Yankee Dutchmen", so I am wondering if they came from Ontario. The name Grayton" or "Greytown" is mentioned, so I'm hoping Uxbridge and Grey County are nearby.

Obtaining a death certificate

by

I have been trying for two years in obtaining a death certificate for my 2ggfather, Rueben Cronk dying in Grey County, in 1900. Could anyone there tell me if the county of Grey, keeps a copy of death certificate some where in County records or is all sent to Ontario records. I can't get anything out of any Ontario records and was just wondering if the County of Grey keeps these type of records. Thanks for anyone who will answer.

Hello Jim:
There must be records kept in Grey County. My nephew got a copy of my grandmother's Medical Certificate of Death. I am not sure at what office he got it, but it was in Owen Sound. She died in 1925.

Youngs - Holland Twsp

by

I am a descendant of the Young's from Holland Twsp. There are about four of us researching the original four brothers (Samuel, William, James, Thomas) that came from County Armagh, Ireland circ 1847. Their mother Eliza (Morrison) Young and another son David joined them in 1851. In all our research of census's etc., we always run across Hugh, and have wondered if he fit in this family. In Eliza's letter of reference from the Aghavilly Parish, it stated she was coming to Canada to join her five children already here. We can only account for four. We don't know if the fifth was a daughter or a son. If it was a daughter, she might show up in the census' under her married name. Just thought I would connect with you on the off chance.

Young family

by

I am researching the Young name also. The first I can find mine is Bentinck, Grey Co. 1853. John born 9/14/1830. married to Margaret McIntyre 12/06/1853. A thomas young is found near by so I assume this is a brother. On the 1861 census a "Lunitic or Idiot" named Rachel lives with him. {Probably deaf or something like that}. So, John, Thomas and Rachel were probably siblings. I do not know where they came from or any other names. Parents poss. John or William Young married to Kate Malloy. I am stuck and do not know how to research back from 1853. I think they were just leasing and did not purchase the property in Bentinck. In my perusals I have seen the name Hugh Young but can not make a connection. Can you?

Young/McIntyre

by

I am the great-granddaughter of John and Margaret and am also trying to find their parents. I expect you are correct that Thomas, John and Rachel are siblings and I am hoping to find written proof of this. In the 1851 census for Albion, Peel Co., Thomas, John and Rachel are living (along with a widowed Elizabeth Young) with their parents, James and Catherine Young (Catherine's maiden name was Mulloy.)

An Ann McIntyre is living with John and Margaret in Bentinck in the 1861 census. She is from Carrick. There is also an Ann McIntyre buried in St. George's cemetery (1846-1869) - would this be the same person? Perhaps so. John and Margaret's daughter, Kezia (d. 20 Mar 1862) is also buried there.

Perhaps you could email me directly and we could exchange info?

Young Family

Hi Irene, I believe we may share the same relatives. My gggGrandmother was Lavinia Ann Young who was the daughter of James and Catherine Young [Milloy/Mulloy].She married Jacob Parsons on Sept. 17, 1834. I also believe that my gg grandfather George Wilson's step father James Young may have been related to Lavinia. There is a great similarity among the names of the children. Do hope there is a connection. I have pictures of Catherine, Lavinia and Lavinia's daughters. My mailing address is box A120, R.R. #1 Coldwater, Ont. L0K 1E0. My phone # is [705] 686-7309. Youngs - Holland Twsp

by

Amazing how all families carried the same names. One of the original Young brothers was named John (but he did not emigrate, died in the war). At this point I see no connection, but who knows. Our William married a Curtis, so there is no connection there. Is interesting your mention of Peel, as our William was in Peel in the 1850s. So for now we keep searching. Am really hoping to find out the 5th child who was already in Upper Canada when the mother (Eliza) emigrated in 51.

My gandfather, Danel Allan Boyd, came from Glowgow, Scotland in the 1890's and lived with his uncle (name unknown) in Owen Sound. In 1906, he married Margaret Jane Masson, a daughter of Judge James Masson of Owen Sound, and moved to British Columbia. I would be interested in learning more about his family, as I understand a large number of the Boyd family still resides in Grey County.

Boyds

Hello. My ancestors came from Oxford, England and settled in Grey County (St.Vincent and Keppel Townships) in the early 1840s, therefore they are likely not related to your predecesors. There are still a number of them in the vicinity so be aware of the separate families.

Good luck in your search.
