GREER

by

I am reasearching my ggrandfather James GREER and his wife Margaret (McCLINCHY) who lived in Euphrasia from about 1860 to 1902 or 03.
One of their girls, SUSAN GREER married PHILIP SPARLING and had two girls Maggie and Flossie.

Another daughter, ELIZABETH A married Stuart Robinson, and I found them in Toronto in 1901

One son SAMUEL GREER married Maggie WALLER and theyy had two sons Malcolm and Walter.

One son Robert Henry came to Toronto and Married my grandmother there.

One son WILLIAM was on the 1901 census on the farm site but I have no record of him after that.

Another son JAMES Alexander GREER was not on the census after 1891.

My questions are:
Does anyone have any information regarding the death of James Sr., James Jr. or William?
Are there family members of Sam Greer or Philip Sparling who are interested in our family history?

I would appreciate any information.
Please contact me at kellycj@cadvision.com (CalgaryAB)
Many thanks,
C Kelly

For all of you on the paper trail ... you can search the Ontario Archives web site for information on how to obtain birth, marriage and death certificates. The Canadian Archives web site also has a genealogy section, and lets you find some information on your relatives.

Clugstons from Ireland

by

My great-grandfather is James Clugston, born 1829 in Armagh, Ireland, coming to Canada in 1845 and settling in Euphrasia Twp. He married Annie Knott in 1858. I am looking for information on James' family of origin. I appreciate any help. If anyone could help me locate the following booklet, mentioned in a Clugston web site, it would be a great help - I have no information on the family of 11 with whom he apparently came to Canda. The following text was submitted by a Stu Clugston.

Thanks for any clues you may have, Mary Ann Clugston
___________

"Brief History of John Clugston"

John Clugston was born in Armagh County in Ireland in 1818. He left Ireland in 1837 with a family of eleven and sailed for Canada, settling in Chingacousy Township, County of Peel, Province of Ontario.
...

An elderly relative, a cousin of my dad's, with the help of his family has put together a booklet that traces many in the Clugston family tree on the branch that settled near Meaford. They completed a lot of this booklet in 1982 with the help of their daughter (Kathryn Clugston Hewgill) and their daughter in law (Linda Williams Clugston).

Clugston's of Euphrasia

by

In 1851 there are 3 Clugstons born in Ireland residing in Euphrasia. 2 are married and one has kids. They are James, John and Robert. I am uncertain by your posting as to what exactly it is you are looking for. I know nothing of Ireland, but I can help possibly with Euphrasia. I am connected in a small way with the Clugston name actually as one of my cousins (way back) had married a Clugston.

David,

Thanks for your reply. You may realize that the James Clugston that shows up in the 1851 census is the James I'm talking about. He was apparently cousin to Robert and John, who were apparently brothers (as far as I know both James and John had quite a family - there's information on John's family on the Clugston web page: http://www.cstone.net/~clugston/). If there were actually 11 Clugstons who all came over together, that would add another dimension to my understanding of their life in Canada and of their voyage. Do you know much about that? Did they come over as an eleven-some? Were they all related, and if so, how? Did they start off living together as they got their lives in Canada started? So my questions span both Euphrasia and Ireland. These are the issues I'm pursuing with my own paper trail research - but some information will just never turn up on paper.

Thanks for any help.

Clugstons from Ireland.

by

Hi Mary Ann. I'm a grandaughter of Milton, son of James Clugston and Annie Knott. From him I inheirited some handwritten info mostly about his own siblings. From which one are you? As far as I know James's father died in Ireland, his mother(nee Smith), and a 'small family' (James & 2 brothers,John & Robert)were the immigrants. I'm new to net research and trying to connect to as many ontario Clugston decendants as possible, (I have old photos of them). Milton, Ewart, and Harold had their families out west. Look for my posts on this site and others related.

CALDWELL/LAURIE

by

I'm looking for information about my great-grandparents, William and Margaret Caldwell, who moved to Durham in 1876. He died in 1883. Margaret married again in 1890 (James Laurie). There were 7 Caldwell children: Robert, Mary Jane, Elizabeth, Catherine Anne, Maude, Margaret, and Lyman John.

It is possible that his parents lived in Bentinck, as there is mention of a Robert R.H. Caldwell (died 1876) wo was a member of Lodge 375 (what is that??) and his wife, Mary Moore, died 1907. They are buried in Holy Trinity Anglican Cemetery.

If anyone can help, I would be grateful.

Barnes and Parash families

by

I am looking for information on the Barnes and Parash families that, I think, moved together to Canada from Vermont. They settled about 9 miles outside Brockville, Ontario in the late 1700s or early 1800. When "Grandpa" Barnes became too old to work the farm, they moved to Markham to live with their daughter, Cynthia Barnes Flumerfelt, wife of George Flumerfelt. Does this family fit with anyone else's? Thanks. Harriet

Kelsey marriage-lookup in newspapers-1900s

by

I am hoping someone would be willing to look for a newspaper announcement of my Grandmother and Grandfather's marriage. I have already tried the Durham library several times without even an answer to e-mails or a written letter. Katherine Ermine Kelsey married James (Bud) Wellington Lamb, most likely in Durham as the Kelsey family lived there. The marriage would have taken place about 1922 or 23 as my Father, the first born was born in September of 1924. The Kelsey family had a photo studio in Durham in the late 1800s and early 1900s. My Grandfather (James W. Lamb) was from Woodstock, Ontario. He and my Grandmother split up about 1929. I have never met him. He may have died in 1961. Any help would be appreciated.

Moore/Theakston of Ravenna, Collingwood Township

by

I am the grandson of Ellingsworth George (E.G.) Moore.
He was killed in an auto accident in the late 60's.
I am also the "only" male Moore to further the Moore name.
Ellingsworth was my grandfather and was married to Sadie Theakston.
They had three children:
Iona- Mrs Harvey Park of Thornbury
Vernon- My father-married to Betty Stephens
Ray-

My parents still live in Ravenna.
I live in Clinton Township, Michigan.
I have a sister- Karen Cronin or Meaford

I know my grandfather had a brother Alan of Thornbury.
Allan passed many years ago.

Any other information would be appreciated as much of the Moore history is unknown to me.

That is the site I found. In a History of Grey County the only mission mentioned is is a Huron Mission near Penatanguishene. It says, "It was from this mission in January 1616 that Champlain set out with Father LeCaron on the jouney that brought them into Grey". There is only limited info in the book and no reference to a "Nawah Mission House".

Wilsons in Egremont, Osprey & ??: Andrew, Mahala, Helen Jane, Joseph Daniel, Alice Josephine, An

by

I have found a reference to Dan Wilson as head of household in Egremont in the 1860s.

My great-grandfather Andrew Wilson (b. Jan 12, 1849) and Mahala Wilson (b. June 25, 1854, nee Allen) Wilson appear in an 1881 census record of Osprey.

My great-aunt Helen Jane Wilson (b. Apr 1, 1877) and grandfather Joseph Daniel (b. January 15, 1879) were both born in East Grey County.

Their siblings Alice Josephine Wilson (b. Mar 19, 1880), Andrew Thomas Wilson (b. Feb 28, 1883), Annie Mahala Wilson (b. Feb 10, 1885), William Allen Wilson (Jan 22, 1888) and John Clarence Wilson (Jul 12, 1893) were also born in Ontario.

I am desperate to find any information on:
(1) the Dan Wilson in Egremont listed in the Gazetteer and Directory of the County of Grey, and
(2) birth records for Andrew Wilson, very conceivably born in Grey Country.

Any and all other information on this family would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you!

Mary b. 12-26-1846 Canada
Robert Jr. b.06-09-1850 Canada

Their children were Alexander (b. 1855, married Fannie, children William, Ida, Earnest, and Lindsay);
John (b. 1858);
William (b. 1861, married Barbara, children Mary Ann, Sarah, and William);
Emily (b. 1863);
Samuel (b. 1865);
Mary Jane (b. 1868, daughter by name of Mrs. Monaghan);
David (b. 1871);
Jamieson (b. 1872, married Mary Ireton, children Pearl, Clara, and Earl);
Robert (b. 1874).

Johnston

by

I think I have finally found a link - been searching forever. I come from the Ernest Johnston line - The mothers real name was Frances Ormandy. I know that Ernest was from Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada, before coming to Manitoba where he met and married Anna Reid and having 6 children. Ernest and Anna are my grandparents !!. I don't know too much on any of them but I do know some. How are you related in this scenario?
Look forward in hearing from you

Minards of Owen Sound/Paisley

by

I have a blank in my family tree and am wondering if anyone can help me out? I have used the OCF, but to no avail.

Record Dates from November 1962:

Wellington V (U?) Minard/Catherine Minard (nee?)

Mathew Huston/?.....? Minard/Huston?

Welington G. Minard/Mary E. Minard (nee Huston?)

Harold F. Robinson/Shirley M. Minard

I'm trying to find out whom was married to Mathew Huston (they were a Minard as well I believe), in 1962.
As well as the maiden name of Mary E. Minard, I believe it was Huston as well.

Thanks to anyone that can lend a hand.

Tone's looking for birth info on foster sister, Mamie Alvera Dewart

by

Our adopted sister, "Mary Tone", aka Mamie Alvera Dewart, was born sometime around 1898.
She was brought to our home in Ayton, Ontario on June 18, 1904 from an orphanage in Hamilton, Ontario. The only information that we have is that she was 6 years old at the time. A gentleman by the name of Mr. O'Connor or O'Connell was in charge at the orphanage and arranged for her to be sent to us. For reasons unknown to all of us, she was never formally adopted, although we all considered her our sister. She left Ayton, in 1917, at the age of 19 and returned to the orphanage in Hamilton, where a woman there, by the name of Miss Downey arranged for her to work there. She moved to Sask. in 1919 with the Stewart sisters and married their brother, William Stewart, and we never saw her again. Our family, and especially her children, are interested in learning the details of her birth; her birth parents, etc...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Todds and Roomes in the Proton area

I am searching for information about John Todd and his wife Hannah (nee Roome) and their family. They are in the Dundalk and Proton area in the 1881 census, 1891 census, 1901 census and they are both buried there. However, I am having trouble tracking their movements prior to that time, and I can't find records of the two oldest boys that were living with them (John and Richard) - they were Hannah's children from before her marriage to John Todd, therefore they are sometimes reported as being Todds and sometimes as Roomes.

Bowley Arnold of Melancthon Twp m. Matilda (?)

by

Bowley Arnold is the gr gr grandfather of my husband William A Arnold.

We are looking for:
... the children of Bowley and Matilda
... Matilda's maiden name and parents
... parents of Bowley
... any other marriages of either Bowley or Matilda
... Birth/death dates/places of Bowley and Matilda

We know of 2 sons so far. Not sure if there are any other children. We have William Isaac Arnold (gr grandfather of my husband) m. Francis Marion Coe; and Josh Arnold.

We know at some point William Isaac was either born in or moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba as that is where the rest of the family is currently living and where Francis was born.

We know Bowley's home became known as "Fiddlers' Green" as several fiddlers including him used to gather there to play. The fiddlers included: John T Hemstreet, Harry Stewart, Walt Yokum, Jack Anderson, Bill Phair, Jack Scott, Alex Goodwin, WJ Cunningham, Tom Ghant. Not sure if any of the family's connected to these gentleman would have any info, but didn't think it would hurt to include them

All I have to go on our 2 newspaper clippings which do not even list the name of the newspaper, a connection to another line starting with William Isaac's youngest daughter, and a scant few memories.

If anyone could help with any kind of info, it would be greatly appreciated. My father-in-law will be 81 in September and he is a bit anxious to find out his roots as he has been told he is a direct descendant of Gen. Benedict Arnold (according to one of the newspaper clippings and family stories). We are just unsure as to which one of Gen. Arnold's children we stem from

Thanks in advance for your help.
