I just recently purchased a printout of the Boyd Cemetery in Keppel Township which is now maintained by the Village of Shallow Lake. To obtain the name and phone number, as requested, I would suggest you write to Bruce & Grey Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 66, Owen Sound, Ontario, N4K 5P1

Laidlaw, George and Campbell, Isobel of Bentinck Township

by

I am searching for information about my gg grandparents who lived in Bentinck Township around 1865-1880. George Laidlaw was born in Scotland in 1843 and moved to Grey County sometime between 1860-1865. He married Isobel Campbell born in 1847 in Ontario. They had two children Robert born in 1874 and Isabell born in 1878. They moved to Walhalla, North Dakota in 1880-1881, where another son Adam (grandfather) was born in 1885. If anyone has any information I would be very grateful for the help.

FLUMERFELT RELATIONS

by

Hello,
I'm researching the Flumerfelt family. I found that a Charles Flumerfelt was living in the district of Grey North, sub-district Sydenham. This information came from the 1871 census of Ontario. Can anyone tell me anything more about him and his family? I'm specifically looking for a Maud (Matilda) Flumerfelt who was the daughter of a William Flumerfelt.I also found an Ann and a Sylvester Flumerfelt on the same census. Ann was living in the district of York East, sub-district, Markham. Sylvester was living in the Ontario North district, sub-district, Scott.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maria

Hi Maria. We may be working the same family. My Ancestor is George Flumerfelt, who lived in Markham. George had a brother, William, and a son, William. George also had a daughter, Harriet, from whom I am descended. I have some information on the Williams I mentioned, if you think they are the ones you are tracking. Harriet

Hi Linda - I too am researching this family in Grey County. Charles & wife Eleanor are buried at St. Matthews Cemetery north of Bognor. Charles b 1822 approx. d 1884 and Eleanor b 1834 d 1903. A Christina FLUMERFELT m May 24 1886 at Bognor to WAKEFIELD and a William FLUMERFELT m in Owen Sound June 20 1876 to Martha NIXON. Have not been able to tie these together yet. My gm was apparently a FLUMERFELT b April 4 1881 and apparently adopted as a young child as one of her parents died. Any additional names you have would be appreciated!

Charles Flummerfeld

by

I have some information on the descendants of Rev. Cornelius Flummerfelt.

My grandmother (Margaret Flummerfelt) was the daughter of Robert and Mary (Byers) Flummerfelt.

I have found all of her siblings except for the lone boy...Charles Robert (b. 1889). He may have headed West...after he left the care of the Grey County Children's Aid.

Please contact me if you have any information about Charles or if I can help with any information that I have regarding his 4 sisters.

george flumerfelt

I used to babysit for a George Flumerfelt (wife Doris) family in Rouyn Noranda Quebec in the 1950's). I believe he was a mining engineer and they later moved to Ireland for a job. I did see them once in the 60's when they were passing thro' Montreal. If they are relatives and you know where they are I would love to reconnect.

Hope to connect

by

Hi Bonnie: I just got a call from my daughter, saying that she had googled George's name and came up with this message from you. I only hope that after six years, you are still at this address. What fun it would be to connect again.

I am living in South Surrey, B.C. and have since l988. Unfortunately, George is a victim of Alzheimer's disease and has been living in a care facility for the past two years.

Where are you living?

I won't go into any more until I hear further from you. After six years, the chances are slim I think.

Looking forward to hearing from you. As ever, Doris

Flumerfelt Relations

by

Hi Maria - I'm presently researching this family in Grey County. My gmother was Maud FLUMERFELT b April 4 1881, in Sydenham Tp. I'm going to request her birth info from LDS in Utah to determine her parents. She was adopted by Alexander & Rebecca Thomson of Sydenham - according to family notes this was because one of her parents (father?) died & mother remarried (Patterson?) and they moved to the U.S.
Does any of this connect with the Maud you are searching? I really would appreciate knowing!
Thanks - Janet

Maud Flumerfelt

Hello,

I came across your request for information on Maud Flumerfelt. From what I can tell, there is a Maud Flumerfelt in my family tree. From what I can gather, she was the sister of my great-grandfther William Flum. If we are dealing with the same Maud, she married Michael Alderman in 1891. I would be interested in hearing from you should be dealing with the same person.

Miersch/ Sanders

by

I am looking for relatives, long past I'm sure, to Matilda Barber Miersch [1862-1910]. In some records I have received, it's possible siblings of her's moved to Own Sound and later to Keppel. On a marriage registration, her future father-in-law Robert Sanders, is listed as being from Artemesia - his son was James Sanders, who married Matilda in 1881, they had a son Cyrus in 1882, then James died in 1883, cause unknown. At the time of James's death I believe he was a shoemaker in Listowel, Perth Co. I know it's a long shot to hope for another connection; my Canadian searches have been much more successful than my American ones...and I live in the U.S.!! Thanks.

I have found information on some of the above family members in a book entitled "The History of Floyd Co. Iowa" 1882 & 1900. Also, articles written in a few Marble Rock newspapers. I've also documented tombstones I've found in the local Marble Rock cemeteries. I have photos and etchings.

Alexander Vanmyer Sr. was a prominent citizen in Floyd Co. around l870 ish. He ran a
Prescription drug supply company with a Mr. Clark. Member of Oddfellows. He and his
Wife married in Ogdensburg NY and their son Alexander was born in CANADA. Jane Bell was from Doormoor IRELAND. [I have more details on this for those who want to know more]

Alexander Vanmyer Jr. died in a hotel in St. Louis MO. His death mentioned in the local Iowa newspaper said he died for unknown reason but it was suspicious. [I have a little
More detail for those who want to know more.]

Please note the change in the Vanmeer spelling. This was not done in my error. This
is exactly the way it was written in the bible. I am unclear why the change in the name occurred. [I would love anyone's input on this] One other thing I would like to mention, on the death certificates and on the tombstones of Alexander Sr. & Jr. and
wife Jane the last name is spelled now spelled VAN MEYERS. I also found them by chance in the cemetery when I was searching my Collison line. They were all in the same area. I would love more info. on the JOHNSON line as well.

I am truly excited about sharing my information with all of you. Please let me know
what you think of this information. I would love to hear from all of you!

By the way, I am a direct descendant of Mary E. (Vanmeer) Johnson. She would be my
Great-Great-Great-grandmother. In M.E. Johnson's bible there are two tintype photos.
I think it's Mary E. and Charles M. Johnson. However, they are not marked.

UNDOCUMENTED info. below.

Recently someone on the internet wrote me and explained that Hannah (williams) Vanmeer raised Elmina Johnson because Elmina’s mother Mary E. Johnson was ill.
Mary E. Johnson died when Elmina was young. So, Hannah raised Elmina and this to me would explain why someone would believe that Elmina’s mother was Hannah.

On Elmina’s death certificate it lists her mother as Hannah Vanmeyers and father J. Johnson. Now, I’m not sure who J. Johnson is…made Charles father????

I also found out that Charles was a civil war soldier…could it be he died while at war and that’s why he was unable to care for Elmina???

If you can verify any of this info. I’d love to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Dawn (Reeves) Hass

I am in need of the name and location of the United Bretheran and Methodist Churches in or near Grey County Melancthon Twp. that I may contact for a search of their records for my great-great grandfather Charles Badgero (Bagero)and his son Lorenzo. Charles'religion is listed as as UB in the 1861 Census and in the 1871 as Methodist.
Any information about Charles prior to 1861 would be very helpful.
Birthplace listed for Charles on the 1861 Census record is NY which I which I have taken to mean New York, however since I have been unable to locate him in New York, I am wondering if this could possibly mean North York Ontario.
Anyone having experience with either of these Census records and their abbreviations that have any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thank You
Sheryl Talley

Curry - Boyd

by

Hi, I'm doing research on the families of William Boyd, b. 1830 and Jane Whyte, b 1836, of Bentinck Twp; and also Samuel Currie and Ann Jane ? of Keppel Twp.

These Currie's had four daughters, Sarah Ann (m. John Boyd), Margaret Jane (m. Frederick W. Spencer), Elizabeth (m.George Henry Barfoot), Rebecca (m. Thomas Cain.)

In Census' and birth registrations I am running into conflicting dates and spellings of Whyte (White) and Currie (Curry)

Any information would be appreciated.

Rouse or McPhatter

by

I am looking for any information I can get about these two families. The McPhatters were commercial fisherman at Presquile and owned the Big Bay General Store. Charles McPhatter owned McPhatter Moters in Annan. The McPhatters offered to let the Rouse's who were also commercial fisherman to use their dock after the land that the Rouse's dock came out from was claimed by indians. Alexander Rouse later became the building inspector for Kepple Township.

I don't know if I am one of the descendants but my mother and I are trying to gather information on an Elizabeth Grose who died in 1942 but we do not know the exact year of her birth. She was in fact my mother's grandmother which makes her my great grandmother.

I have come across some information which gives the names of the children of Walter Grose and Eunice Rogers.

Hope this helps us all.

I am a member of the Henning family of St. Vincent township. My mother was one of the Henning girls. She married a Waite.
What's your connection to the group? My sister-in-law spotted your post on the net and forwarded it to me. If I can be of any help, just email me back, and I'll see what I can fill in for you. I know, or can find out quickly, most of the current/recent history, etc., but I'll bet you have more of the older information, (e.g. DOB of grandparents, etc.) than I do.
Looking forward to hearing from you,

Wiley's

by

I can't recall if I replied to your posting or not, sorry for the delay if I hadn't......Unfortunately there would be no connection the Wylie name from my experience tends to be of an Irish background and my Wiley's (Spelling) are from England. so far I have seen no variations of the spelling in our lines. Just so you know there were some "Wylie's" in the Toronto Gore/Vaughan area. There are some notes on them in the "Perkins Bull Papers" at the Peel Region Archives in Brampton. I had run across them earlier. But you'll have to keep an eye out though as there are also "Wiley's" of English descent noted. There are also old photographs of "Wylie's" listed in the "Cole Collection" there. I got a picture of an Alice Wylie from there. She's not related, but it was a very interesting picture so I got a copy from them. Anyway it's a long shot, but perhaps your "Wylie's" started there?

McClinton

This is in answer to your old query. My great-great-grandmother was Elizabeth McClinton who married James McMeeken. They homesteaded near Varney and are both buried in Maplewood Cemetery. I was told that there was a crossroad (which is now on the main highway) kitty-corner from the Maplewood Cemetery called McClinton's Corner by the locals in the old days. Does any of this sound familiar? Have you heard of the surname Lash?

I am of no help to your search regarding the family members you listed. However, there is some connection with my paternal grandmother's family with McClinton's in the Grey County/Owen's Sound area during that time period. Unfortunately none of our family knows alot about our grandmother's family (she was born out of wedlock). Her mother was a McMeekan and her grandparents were McClintons.

Lighthouse at Presqu'ile

by

Hi Susan

I have a copy of Sarawak Saga. Yes there was a light house in Presqu'ile. According to the book the light house was built in 1873. The only keeper listed was John McKenzie, and he allowed his younger daughter to assist him. Her duties consisted of lighting, extinguishing, and cleaning the lamp.

My maiden name is Sutton, but I am not sure if there is any connection between my family, and Catherine's family. I do have a little information on Sophia Sutton, and her family. I have kept everything I have found so far on Sutton's in the area, as there may be a connection, but I am in the process of switching over my database to a new computer, and would have to look up what I have. I will check out the book, to see what information is in it about Joseph, and Sophia if anything, and I will get back to you. If you have any specific questions about them, please get back to me.

I will get back to you soon.

Catherine Sutton's mother Mary and Catherine, William Sutton's oldest daughter looked after them and the rest of her sibblings. William Percy Staves and Catherine Staves eventually went to Cape Croker Reserve with Catherine Sutton's mother Mary, their grandmother to live. William Percy Staves is my g grand father . Smith of Flesherton and Markdale

I'm researching the family of Richard Smith b. 1826 d. 1914 m. Eliza Jane Glassford b. 1833 d. 1895.

Also listed as spouses are the names Aubern, Bates, Boland, Carr, Dinwoodie, Henderson, Large, Madden, McConnel, McGee, Munshaw, Parr, Pipher, Ratcliffe, Teeter, and White. There are no first names of spouses but I do have the names of some of the children of these marriages.

I am looking for a William Smith who was born in England in 1819...lived in Artemesia...found in 1861, 1871, 1881 census there. Married Ellen White about 1845 in Vaughan, Ontario. Children were John, Sarah,Ellen,Henry, William,Hannah, Samuel, Catherine, Isaac, Joseph, Annie, Robert. Don't know where in England our William was born or what age he came to Canada. Could have been an older brother to your Richard, and married to the White in your spouse list. Would like to know more about what you have. The town of Flesherton comes up in our Smith's history but the only one we know of that lived there was Wm's son, Samuel, who was my grandfather. Hope we have a match.....Gordon

Thanks for the prompt reply, Jim. Doesn't look like we're in the same family, although I suspect my William's father would also be named John (like your Richard's) as William named his first son John. And the time frame would be right. But nothing else seems to fit. I am about to order land records for Artemesia from the Family History Library in Salt Lake through our local Family History Center which now seems like my only hope for getting any background (where born in England). Good luck to you....and thanks again.

Bailey, McDonald

by

I am searching for information on/ancestors of and descendants of George Bailey born~ 1831 and his wife Ann McDonald born ~ 1836. George was a blacksmith and in the 1871 census was in South Grey, Bentinck and in 1881 was at South Grey, Durham.Their children were Maggie, Eli, George, Anne Jane, Albert and Lily. There are possible family connections to Puslinch, Wellington in the census of 1851 and St. Thomas in the early 1900's. Parents of George are probably Eli (a blacksmith) and Jane Bailey, both born around 1808 in England and their children were George, Sophia, James, William and John Henry.
Also, does anyone have access to a book "History of Sydenham Twp. - Owen Sound -1967 or the Grey Directory for 1890 as I believe George Bailey may be mentioned in those publications.Hope someone else has seen these people as I sure could use some help!
