Help!! McCormack's in Grey County
by
Looking to trace my great grandfather and his family. My great grandfather was Hugh McCormack born Dec. 23 (month and day I am positive on) about 1877? His mothers name was Mary, have no clue as to who his father was. He had 4 other siblings. Their names and dates of birth according to a 1901 census record. John McCormack born Oct. 27 1880. Dougall McCormack born Sept. 4 1882. Kate McCormack(later married a W.J. Crawford) born Aug. 26 1875. Annie(or may be Anne) McCormack no date of birth for her but she married a Grigg. They we're all Scotch Presbyterian. Their mother Mary came to Canada in 1873. The family moved to Northern Ontario Thessalon area after the father passed on, where they owned and ran a farm. That is where I found them in the 1901 cesus record, beyond that nothing so far. Please can anyone help me out, it's almost like they never existed. Thank you for your time, Sue
Looking for information on George GRIFFITH and his wife Martha (LUCAS) Griffith who emigrated from Ireland in 1842 and settled in Euphrasia twp. after a short stay in Vaughan. Reliable sources say they are buried in St. JAmes Fairmount Anglican cemetery, but they are not on the Grey county cemetery record microfilm. Any ideas where to look next? I would like to get their death certificates, but only know the year of their deaths, so need the tombstone info. All help appreciated. Thanks
WRAY, Robert b abt 1826 IRELAND
HUNT, Lydia b abt 1837 ONT (she died between 1871-1881) most likely
Sullivan Twp.
They lived in Sullivan Twp, Grey Co, in 1871 census, he was age 45
Their children:
John
Thomas
Matilda Jain
George
Frances Henery
James
I checked the GREY co marriages 1869 - 1873 surname list, and the 2
surnames show up, but it's only an index.
HUNT
WRAY
Robert moved to North Norfolk Co, sometime after 1871 and remarried there at
age 57
There is another WRAY family living in HOLLAND twp, right next to SULLIVAN,
his name is James and they may be brothers.
Looking at the time period, they may have arrived during the Irish Potato
Famine.
Any assistance will be appreciated;
I welcome any suggestions.

I am looking for information on the Bishop family. Anything to do with William Avery "Billy" Bishop.
I know that his parents were William and Margaret. He had a brother and a sister and he married Margaret Burden (grand daughter to Timothy EAton).
If anyone has any info on the Bishops or the Averys (mothers family) I would really appreciate it.
Thank you.
Billy Bishop was the son of William Avery (Will) Bishop (1858-1922) and Margaret Louise Greene (1857-1936). The name Avery comes from his great great grandfather Avery Bishop ((1805-1870) and is repeated in various family names. Avery Bishop married Elizabeth Helmke.
You can find more information on Billy Bishop VC in a book entiled Billy Bishop,VC written by W.D. Mathieson.
Billy's paternal Grandfather was Eleazar Bishop of Pennsylvania Dutch origin, while his grandmother was Sarah Lilbourn, who's roots trace to the United Empire Loyalists. Eleazar and Sarah eloped and settled in Owen Sound. Thire son Will marries Maragret Louise Green. Their children where Worth born in 1884, Billy BishopVC born in 1894, and sister Louise born 1895. Billy married Timothy Eaton's granddaugher Margaret in Toronto at Timothy Eaton Memorial Churth on October 17, 1917.
I am wondering where you have information from that Billy Bishop's paternal grandfather was of Pennsylvania Dutch origin. All that is known about the Bishop who started this branch of the family is that he was born in the US Abt. 1805. His name was Avery Bishop. He married an Elizabeth Helmke who's father Johan Engelhard Helmke was one of the original Berczy settlers. From research I have done I think that Avery Bishop is connected to the branches of Eleazar Bishop and his wife Sarah Dart, of Connecticut. As yet I cannot find concrete proof, however too many names in the two family are similar and in their own way unusual, such as Avery or Eleazar Wilson which is what Avery named one of his sons.
If you have any other information that you could share with me that would be great.
I have a copy of the Bishop-Helmke family tree. On this it says that Avery Bishop was born in PA between 1800 & 1805.
If you could send me more of the info that you have I would appreciate it. I am trying to find the connection to my family. My grandfather knew there was one but not sure how. Billy Bishop and my grandfather look like brothers.
Billy Bishop had 3 siblings: Reginald Worth March 18,1884-Nov. 27, 1957; Hiram Kilbourn 1887-1892 (named for great grandfather); William (Billy) Avery Feb 8,1894-Sept 11,1956; Mary Louise Oct 14,1896-Oct 26 1974
Billy's father: William Avery Bishop 1858-1922had the following siblings:Allan K. b.1861; Edward b. 1869; Maggie 1867-1947; Annie b. 1863 or 1865; Edith b. 1872
Does anyone know where I could obtain church or cemetery records for the Presbyterian Church in Williamsford. Where do these records go when a church closes? I know that my ggreat grandparents William Buchanan and(Janet Halliday)were married in this church in 1844. I know that many of my Buchanan relatives were buried in the adjoining cemetery. Can anyone give me some addresses to try? Please email me direct...thanking you in advance.

Reverend John A. Andrew- Methodist Minister 1860's-1900's
by
Looking for info on this relative of mine. Since he was a Methodist Minister and lived in Osprey Township, and possibly Artemesia, I thought maybe someone might have his name on marriage certificates, baptism certs., etc. And possibly someone might have a photo of him at a wedding or other family church event. Please contact me if you can assist me with this search. Thanks.
Looking for info on the Andrew, Lee, and Farley families of Osprey and Artemesia, Grey Co in the mid 1800's. Names include Anson Lee, Mary Lee, Fergus Farley, Hannah Farley, Reverend John A. Andrew (Prim. Methodist), Joseph Andrew, Elizabeth Andrew, Rachel Andrew, Phebe Andrew
I found a Joseph Moggie (spelled this way on the 1851 census in Holland Twp,Grey Co.)(married Margaret McCauley) His twin sister, Isabella (married William Donnelly) and two brothers William (married Ann Donnelly) and my GGrandfather John (married Barbara Murdock) show up on the 1861 census in Holland Twp., Grey Co. Joseph,Isabella and William went west to the Portage La Prairie area in the 1870's. John went to the Manitoulin Island at the same time. Out west the name got changed to Moggey and on the Manitoulin it got changed to Moggy. I'm looking for info on where they first immigrated to in Canada from Northern Ireland.
Any info will help.
In the book "The Path That Led To Holland" Vol II, pg 32 it states
"LOT 54 AND 55, CONCESSION 3, EGR
Joseph Moggey (Moggie) was born 1822 in Antrim, Ireland, came to Canada in 1844, and two years later married margaret Ann McCauley, a bride at 16 years of age. Joseph died Jan 31, 1900, Margaret, born Apr 18, 1830 died Dec 10, 1914; both are burried near Glenboror, Manitoba."
The article states that what land he got, the fact that he built a school on the land, and lists their children. It states (no date) that they left Owen Sound by train and completed their journey by covered wagon, a trip which took eight weeks.
The farm was sold in 1882, before they went west, or after, I don't know.
There is also info ref your John and Margarets property. It says the school and Moggie community got its name from this family.
There are two volumes for the book I quoted, and I have found them invaluable in my search for my ancestors in Holland Twsp. Alas, I haven't had much luck on this query page, but some day, some time someone will see my posting on Young/Fraser.
I'm not sure if there is a relationship, but in my research I have found a Margaret Goodwill that married John McKenzie. Does this seem familiar to you? I believe Margaret is the daughter of Anthony and Jane and she and John named one of their sons Anthony. My husband is related to the John McKenzie family.
I am looking for Merriam's related to Justice Johnson Merriam and Carolyn Honeywell Merriam who came from Northumberland Co.to Grey Co.in 1852. They settled in Chatsworth Ontario.
I am researching ancestry and descendants of John Walter, founder of Walters Falls about 1850, in Holland township. Would be pleased to receive any information or reference to sources.
Hello Don
In the past couple of days I have come across some info. regarding a great aunt, Eliza Harriet Taylor (1850-1935 who married a John T. Walter (1854-1915. They had a son J.E. Walter.
John T. was supposedly the grandson of John who founded Walters Falls.
The 1881 Euphrasia census show Eliza as being age 21 and John T. at 26 years of age. They are listed as married but having no children.
Eliza Harriet had a brother Joseph Taylor who married an Elizabeth Walter (1867-1904), they arel listed in the 1891 Euphrasia census as being 33 and 37 years of age and having two children. The marriage announcement says Elizabeth is the daughter of Philip Walter.
I am following the Taylor line but am also trying to fill in my grandfather Taylor's aunts and uncles, and there were 8 altogether. Some of their lines merge with the Abercrombies, Pottages Hall, etc.
If you haven't seen the book "Euphrasia, Glimpses Past and Present" there is a section on page 181 on the founding of Walters Falls.
Hope this is of some help.
Donna
Thanks for the response Donna.
Reviewing the information you sent, I would believe that the siblings Eliza Harriet TAYLOR and Joseph TAYLOR that you describe, may have married siblings John WALTER and Elizabeth WALTER, both children of Philip WALTER the eldest son of the John WALTER who founded Walters Falls in Holland Township, a neighboring township of Euphrasia. I am sending you a separate e-mail with a bit more info on these WALTER's.
I have a newspaper article taken from an Owen Sound newspaper on March 23, 1935, on the founding of Walter's Falls - how John Walter discovered it and the descendents and early life and settlers of that time. Do you have this? If not, if you could send me your e-mail address, I will type it up and send it to you. It is most interesting. This article is from my great aunt's scrapbook.
re: the newspaper article you mentioned so many years ago.
my great great grandfather was john walter.
all my family are buried in st philip's cemetary at the falls.i spent many summers at the falls with my father thomas payne louis walter. many fond memories there.
any info that you can send would be appreciated.
thanks very much

Looking for my Great, Great Grandfather Bartholomew O'Laughlin. He and his family had a farm in Proton Twp (on the corner of Highway 89 & Proton SR7). His name shows up in Dundalk's registry in 1861 and 1865. In 1865, it was spelled without the O', but his decendents all use the O'Laughlin name. Family lore said he came from Ireland (County Clare), was married twice, once to a Johanna Boland, and also a Katherine ?. We also think he was killed in an accident, and buried in a cemetary in Mt Forest on a street called Lovers Lane. His son and brother are buried in St Patricks Catholic Churchyard in Proton Twp. Much of the latter above information comes from a now deceased elderly relative whose memory was fading fast. Thanks for reading this. Proud to have Canadian heritage.

Thomas Edward HUGHES married Ann BOYES in St. Vincent Township in Nov. 1873. He was born Angelsea, Wales, s.o. Griffith Hughes and Frances. She was born in Foleshill Warwickshire, d.o. Benjamin Boyes and Maria Poltney.
Thomas and Ann had dau., Frances Maria Hughes (b. Owen Sound 23 Sep. 1877). As far as I can tell, they then vanished from the face of the earth!
In 1871, cenus, Grey Co was home to 4 BOYES Heads of Households. Most likely to be related to our Ann is Joseph, born about 1829 in England, farmer, Wesleyan Methodist and in St. Vincent twshp.
If anyone knows anything about these families, please respond.
Thanks

Hi
There is a Thomas Hughes married to an Ann in the 1901 census Of Grey County Sydenham. It shows a daughter Sarrah, son - Grifith and Benjamin.Ann Hughes is buried at Annan Cemetery. Her husbands grave is marked Thomas E Hughes. I don't know if this is the Hughes you are looking for.The daughter in the census was 21 years old born 1879 so it is possible they had a older daughter. Not sure if this helps
Seeking information on the location of "Wilders Lake". At one time it may have been known as "Hamilton's Lake". It was/is located near Durham. The Hamilton family property on the lake was sold to the National Cement Company for "marl". Does anyone know what "marl" is?
Wilders Lake is located east of Highway 6 at the Varney cut off. Varney is approximately 5 km south of Durham. As I understand it marl is like a limestone. They excavated the marl from the lake and then sent it by rail into Durham. Because of the limestone base this is the most beautiful green colored lake. It is now surrounded by cottages and a lodge and golf course.
Thank you for the information about Wilders Lake. Sorry I haven't responded sooner. My husband and I were recently in Ontario and had an opportunity to see the lake. We also found the property where my husband's great-grandfather, Alexander Hamilton, first settled. The property is right on the lake. One of his sons (David) and grandsons had a picnic area on the lake that was visited by many from all around. They also ran a boat rental on the lake.
There are a couple pictures of the lake and the marl "mill" in the History of Egremont book.
Looking for information on a Hugh McCormack/McCormick born Dec.23 1876 in Collingwood, ont. His siblings we're John, Dugalt, Katie and Annie. Don't know who his parents we're. IRWIN Family - Proton & Artemesia Townships, Grey Co.

Seeking further information on the family of JOHN IRWIN & JANE ?, originally immigrating from Ireland. Actual death dates and place of burial remains undetermined.
JOHN & JANE IRWIN likely settled in Proton Township in the early 1850's. They had two known children - namely, Sarah Irwin; John Irwin Jr.
SARAH IRWIN was born 1832 in Ireland and died possibly in Grey County after 1895. She married in 1858, THOMAS REID of Proton Township. They had a family of four known children - William James Reid, Margaret Reid, Susan Reid and Sarah Reid.
JOHN IRWIN JR. was born 1841 in Ireland and died 1907 in Proton Township. He married Jane Nixon (1847 - 1929). They had at least three children - namely, Mary Jane Irwin (1871 - 1888); Sarah (1876 - 1921) Mrs. William Moffat; and Wesley Irwin (1871 - 1961). All of this family is buried in the Ventry Cemetery, in Proton Township.
I am seeking death dates for John & Jane Irwin. And I am also trying to determine further family members other than those related above.
Have you tried the on-line search of the Ontario Cemetery Fund Aid (see cemetery on Homepage of Grey County). There is a listing of a John & Jane Irwin at the Hornings Mills Cemetery in Dufferin County in the twsp. of Melancthon. The details of these listings can be viewed at the Ontario Archives or at your main library by inter-loan.
He was born in 1871 in Dundalk, (Proton township, right?) and married Elizabeth Adelaide Collison (b. 1882 in Bognor, Sydenham Twnship, On.), in 1906 in Shelborne ON, d. 1946. He was my great-grandfather, but I don't know who his parents were. Is he related to your Irwins? If you are interested in him, I can get more information from a relative who researched the Irwins. I'm looking for info on the Collisons.
Thanks for your response concerning the Irwin family. The individual you mentioned in your response is not connected to the Irwins mentioned in my query. I believe that there is no relationship between the parties here.
Boy, do I ever need information on J.A. Irwin! If I'm correct he may hold the secret to my true identity! I was adopted by a family of Irwinsons, but I "learned" that in reality I am an IRWIN. My true heritage "may" make it clearer why I have such physical and mental health problems: I have osteoporosis, erectile dysfunction, rickets, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and most of my right "leg" is moldy. Also I hate cats. Especially superintelligent ones from the future. Please help me "learn" about MY true history. I fear I may never learn how to deserve to LIVE among "good" people.
I may be able to help you if you have not found out the information on the Irwins you are researching re: your inquiry of 2000 on the Proton Twp. surname queries page. His parents were Christopher Hamilton Irwin b. Co.Tyrone, Ireland and his mother was Jane McCutcheon also b. Ireland. Write if I can give you any more info. Gailene
REID Family - Osprey, Proton & Artemesia Twps., Grey Co.
by
Seeking the earlier history of the John Reid family that came to Grey County in the 1850's.
JOHN REID was born circa 1800 in Ireland and died between 1882 - 1891 in Artemesia Township, Grey County.
He married MARGARET ?, who was also born in Ireland circa 1800 and died 1880 in Artemesia Township, Grey County.
They had one known son, THOMAS REID, born circa 1828 in Ireland and died 1891 in Artemesia Township, Grey County. He married SARAH IRWIN in 1858 in Artemesia Township.
These families resided in Osprey, Proton, and Artemesia Townships throughout their lifetime. I am seeking the maiden name of John Reid's wife, Margaret. Also, any other possible children they might have had, other than the Thomas Reid mentioned above. Lastly, I suspect that this family immigrated to Canada around 1848, so I am also trying to determine this family's residence in Ontario prior to moving up to Grey County.
THOMAS SHEPHERDSON is mentioned in the 1871 census living in Grey County. He and his wife ELIZABETH THORNTON (sons GEORGE, MATTHEW, THOMAS, WILLIAM) emmigrated from Yorkshire late 1860?.
I think THOMAS was a great uncle to my grandfather. Has anyone any data on this family
I have found a James S Hudson on the 1871 census that lists district Grey south and sub district Osprey - I would like to find out if he is the same James Sanderson Hudson whose wife Georgana Fleury gave birth to James Harris Hudson in 1873 in Collingwood. I would like to know if there is any family in the area. My Grandfather was Wesley Doxstadder Hudson - born in Ontario in 1876 to James S Hudson & Georgana Fleury and I'm trying to find out if this is the correct family. Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Linda, I saw some of your postings on another geneology site and hoped to email you, but the email address you used at the time is no longer active. The woman you call "Georgana" is listed in geneology sheets I have as "Jennie Fleury Hudson." She was the daughter of Robert Fleury, as I believe you know by now. Robert is my great-great-grandfather. Robert seems to be a "Roadblock" in my family's attempts to look further into the past -- but I'm willing to share anything I know about his descendants who moved to Michigan. Feel free to contact me at my email address, Fleuryssa@aol.com.

I have a Georgianna "Jenny" Fleury born in 1849 (daughter of Robert & Caroline (Fuller) Fleury that has children Marshall, Ada, Maggie, Harris, Robert, William, Wesley, Anne, Carrie, Rosaline. I don't know the name of her husband though.
My husband's great-grandfather was Thomas Wilson from Arran Township, Bruce County. He married Mary Ellen Betson, daughter of William Betson and Elizabeth Oppenshiesen, in Keady in 1888. I am trying to find additional info on William and Elizabeth, as well as to determine where in Ireland Thomas came from. Thanks.
I now know that Thomas' brother was named William and that he settled in Bentinck Township (near Elmwood) in 1881. Any information (especially regarding where Thomas & William Wilson came from in Ireland) would be most helpful. Thanks.

Vanmeer , Lindley -Artimesia and Osprey in the county of Grey Ontario
by
I am seeking information on Samuel Vanmeer in Osprey Ontario around 1871. I know he was there then because he is in the 1871 census. I am also seeking information on a Thomas Linley or Lindley who lived in the Artimesia area around 1875. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi. I'm researching the VANCE family. Henry Vance and his wife Susannah Leary were born in Ireland and came to Canada circa 1853. Several sons were born in Ireland, but I think the first born in Canada was John Robert Vance b. 18 Mar 1853. According to his death certificate it was in Rodman. Is there such a place? His brother, George Vance, b. 13 Jul 1856 says his birth place was in "Dereham", Gray county, Ontario....so I'm looking around Durham, which seems to be the closest I can find. Any tips as to where I should focus? Thanks

Hi Connie,
I'm also researching the Vances and I'd like to exchange info; please get in touch.
My information suggests (for what this is worth) that Henry had a son Thomas b Ireland in 1849 and another, Henry Benjamin, b 1852 in Canada - so presumably they emigrated around 1850-51.
Regards,
Jamie.

I read with interest, your offer to look up marriages in Proton Twp. I believe my gg grandmother may have re- married sometime after 1856. She was Eliza Guin (or Guinn) Nickle, also listed as Nicol. There is a birth/ baptismal record for a son Joseph b. 1856 and baptized 1859, with Eliza listed as a widow... Then nothing. Both Joseph and Eliza disappear. Which makes me wonder if she re- married...
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I am trying to learn more about my roots on my grandmother's side. My grandmother Mabel Switzer married Melville Ross and moved to Vancouver B.C. around 1910 or so. She came from a large family (8-13 children?) had a brother she called "Charlie" and possibly one or two of her siblings also moved to Vancouver. I believe they lived in Mount Forest as some photo's left by her were done by a photographer there.
I am interested in any Masonic connection as well.

I am trying to find a birth certificate for my grandfather who was born in Grey Co. in 1882. Any ideas where to start looking? Do you have a Vital Records Dept.? Were records even kept at that time in Grey Co.?
Not everyone was registered by their parents or guardians. However, you can access this information at the Archives of Ontario, either at the Archives or through your Main Library. If you use your Library ask about the microfilm loan program with the Archives. If you are lucky you may find a copy of the birth registration. If you require a certified copy you will have to contact the Archives.

I am searching for my families connect to other Schafers - ola & Huron County, Michigan which is the County just east of Sanilac Co., MI. They came from Germany. My Great Grandmother was Luise Leyrer, who married Johann Diebel. She had a sister Katerina Leyrer who also came to the US from Kirchberg in Germany and married August Schafer in Tuscola County. They homesteaded a farm there where her Great Grandson still farms today. The Schafer spelling is a little different - but thought there might be a connect since the counties are so close! They had a son Julius, who married a Margaret Buesch, their children were Martha, Henry, & Arthur. Arthur had a son Arold who married Dorothy Johnson - he also had a son Donald. Hos son Arold still lives on the Schafer Homestead in Unionville, MI. Do you have any connects to this family in your tree??? Joyce
