VANDERBURG, GOULD, MOFFAT, BOWERS

by

Looking for ancestors names or any other pertinent info regarding residents of Meaford, St. Vincent and possibly other areas of Grey County; my ancestors include former residents of those areas in the mid-1800s, Nelson VANDERBURG, his wife Mary Ann GOULD, their son Hassard VANDERBURG (who was a Canadian infantryman in Manitoba/Saskatchewan in the 1870s during early phases of the Riel Rebellion), and Hassard's eventual wife, Catherine MOFFAT, daughter of Thomas(?) MOFFAT and Catherine BOWERS. I have no info on identities of earlier ancestors in the VANDERBURG, GOULD, MOFFAT AND BOWERS lines and am seeking same. Most of these individuals migrated to Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario and the city in Michigan by the same name except possibly Thomas MOFFAT and Catherine BOWERS, who may have remained in the St. Vincent, Grey County or Bruce County areas. Thank you!

Your Message about the Cathraes

by

Hello

Our branch of the Cathrae family left Scotland in the early 1840's. My great great grandfather was Martin Cathrae born around 1820 in County Roxburgh, Scotland. He is buried at Anaan, Ontario, near Owen Sound. His wife was Mary. They purchased land and farmed near Anaan. His son, John Cathrae was born in Scotland and was one of the first attendees at the first school at Leith, Ontario in the late 1850's.

In 1863 John bought (I am sure with his father's help) 100 acres of land near Bognor, Ontario and cleared it on weekends, walking back and forth from Anaan (20 miles). The farm was held in the family until 1973.

My grandfather was William Cathrae and my father is Ted Cathrae.

I don't know where you are from, but that is the story about this branch. Another branch came from Roxburgh Scotland around the same time, settling first in Newfoundland, then Nova Scotia, moving to Chicago and finally to Idaho.

That is a quick summary of our immediate family. I have most of the information about this branch of the family if you are interested.

Please let me know about your branch.

John Cathrae (born Feb. 21, 1956)

Update

by

An update to my earlier post. Martin Cathrae was born in Hawick, Scotland on December 31, 1824. His wife Mary Turnbull was born in 1817. Mary Turnbull's sister Margaret was married to Martin Cathrae's uncle William Cathrae. The land at Bognor was purchased by Martin Cathrae in 1863and sold to John Cathrae his son about 20 years later.

William & Ann Hemstock & daughter HANNAH

by

My Gr Gr Grandmother was Elizabeth Hemstock, daughter of William Hemstock and Ann Anderson of Sullivan Township in Grey County, ON. William was married twice, first to Frances Smith and then to Ann Anderson in Nottingham, England. He and his family emigrated to Ontario in the 1840's and settled at Sullivan Township, near Chatsworth, ON. I have accounted for all of William Hemstock's numerous children with the exception of Hannah Hemstock. She was born in 1838 in Nottingham, England and is a child from William's second marriage to Ann. She may have married a DOOLITTLE. Any information about HANNAH HEMSTOCK would be greatly appreciated. Hannah found?

by

I think that Hannah Hemstock may have died around 1851. On the 1851 Ontario Census, William and Ann Hemstock are in Sullivan Twp Grey County with their daughters Hannah, Ann, Fanny, Elizabeth and Isabella. On the following page are more details about the family ie their marital status, kind of residence etc. Under the column 'Deaths during 1851' there is a '1' for the Hemstock residence and I think that this may be Hannah.

Also, there was discussion that Hannah may have married a man named Doolittle. I found that in Hannah's sister Ann's husband David McBain's family there may be Doolittles related through marriage. Lycurgus Doolittle married Jessie McBain in Orangeville, ON in 1889.

JOHN MORRISON & NANCY THOMPSON - Artemesia Township

by

Seeking any descendants of JOHN MORRISON (b. circa 1821 in Ireland) and his wife, NANCY THOMPSON (b. circa 1818 in Ireland).

This family immigrated from Derry County, Ireland in the 1840's and first settled in Nottawasaga Township, Simcoe County. Later, in the 1850's, the family relocated to Artemesia Township, Grey County.

They had a family of at least six known children - Margaret Ann Morrison (b. 1843); Jane Morrison (b. 1849); Emily Morrison (b. 1850); Esther Morrison (b. 1852); Nancy Morrison (b. 1854); and Sarah Morrison (b. 1856).

In particular, Emily Morrison married JOHN REID in 1881 at Flesherton, Artemesia Township, Grey County, Ontario. Following the death of her husband, she later remarried Boyd Thompson in 1892, also in Flesherton. No children were born to these two unions.

I am seeking a photograph only of Emily Morrison and her first husband, John Reid of Flesherton.

Any descendants from the above Morrison pedigree who possesses a photograph of John & Emily (Morrison) Reid,
please contact me.

With thanks,
Kevin.

Ransom Family, Owen Sound Area

by

My grandmother, Margaret Ransom, was born in Owen Sound in 1893 or 1895 to Robert Ransom and Maria Henson. She married Robert Mclean probably in 1910 or 1911, probably in Owen Sound. Robert's birth year is estimated as 1883, The only thing known about Robert McLean's family is that his father was a Salvation Army officer in the 1920s.

The Ransoms are believed to have had 17 children, including Margaret, Will, Tom, Jack, Clarence, Bob, Leone, Katie, Mary (Marie) and Deloris. (Names come from the memory of my mother's cousin.) Two children died at birth and one died around two to three years old. Katie died in a flu epidemic.

If anyone has any knowledge of this family, help would be gratefully appreciated. The McLeans divorced when my mother was young and the knowledge I do have comes from one of her cousins. Peggy

Hello,

I don't have very much information. My Dad is from Markdale and he is a Colgan. His mother was Verna Burnside.

Let me know if there is any family connection?

Vickie

RETRIEVALS FROM LAND TITLES OFFICE - Owen Sound

by

I am seeking someone in the vicinity of Owen Sound who would be able to retrieve copies of a couple of needed land document instruments for my family history. These are available from the Land Titles Office in Owen Sound.

I would certainly appreciate anyone's assistance to complete this small task.

With thanks,
Kevin.

Death information on Long

by

I have information from the Office of the Registrar General dated 25 MAR 1981 regarding the deaths of Robert(Dec. 30, 1898)and Isabella (Mar. 22, 1900) Long of Egremont township. The information contained is the name, date of death, place of death, age or date of birth, marital status, place of birth, informant, and registration number. Would there be a record anywhere that would give me the cause of death, names of parents, or parent's birthplace?

Any information on the couple would be appreciated.

Death information on Long

by

Hi:

All Ontario death registrations prior to 1932 can be viewed at the Ontario Archives in Toronto. These are exact duplicates on microfilm from the original copies.

If properly filled in by the physician, the cause of death and informant will be noted on the death registration.

The names of parents only began to be stated on the Ontario death certificates after 1907 though. In the earlier records, often these entries were left blank, especially when completed by the physician who completed the form back at his office without a family member present to devulge the necessary information.

The information that you had received from the Ontario Registrar General Office back in 1981 would have been very brief. Parents names, place of burial and cause of death were not included in their form responses back then. Personally, I had to review all of the my earlier death extracts to add the necessary details that were omitted by the Registrar General Office at that time.

Your only other alternative to the death certificates is to review the local newspapers that had served your area. Depending on the editor at the times, alot of the earlier obituaries contained a wealth of information about the deceased. This may just contain the parents'names which you are seeking.

Continued success in your research!

Regards,
Kevin.

Kevin:

Thanks for the response to my query on death records. Would these records be available through the family history centers of the LDS church? I live in the US and it isn't possible for me to visit the archives.

I appreciate your assistance in helping me with this.

Death information on Long

by

Pat:

Yes, the Ontario Vital Statistics records would be available through the various LDS Family Centres throughout the U.S. Since you already have the death certificate numbers previously listed on your 1981 receipts, you will just have to review the index by year which you need. Within the year, locate the specific microfilm number which falls in the range of your death registration numbers.

Continued success in your research,

Regards,
Kevin.

ROBERT ROBINSON'S FIRST WIFE?

by

Robert Robinson's second wife was Mary Anne Clarke. He had a daughter Margaret (Maggie) by his first wife. Maggie married George E. Howell. I want to know who Maggie's mother was and when and where she was married. When was her death. Also when did Robert marry Mary Anne? Robert was a minister in Owen Sound in the 1800's. Thanks for any help.

Robert Stamper Robinson

by

I have a Robert Stamper Robinson, born County of York in 1834 and died Oct 1904 in Euphrasia township. He's buried in Thornbury Union Cemetery with his sister Ann Robinson Julian. I believe he was a farmer, though. If any of this matches, I'm happy to share my information.
