Apple orchard mitchells.
by
My great grandfather Robert Mitchell moved to B.C. at the turn of the century for health reasons. He was born in Thornbury of a family of orchardists, producing apples. Would appreciate any family history. His grandfather or father came from Scotland.
Randy,
George Mitchell was a prominent businessman and apple grower in the Thornbury area. If you contact the L.E. Shore Memorial Library in Thornbury there should be material available about Mitchells. The apple processing plant and warehouse are still standing, although not use as originally intended.Good luck.

Because the Mitchell name showed up on my family tree recently, I have been collecting information on the family you are interested in.
The following is a short review of what I have to date.
Alexander Mitchell was born in the Lowlands of Scotland, December 1817 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. He married Mary Gillespie in about 1847 and settled on a homestead north of Heathcote, Ontario around 1848.
The 1881 Canadian household census for Collingwood Township, in the county of Grey East, Ontario District 155B Division #1, on page 21 records his household as number 95+. It lists him as farmer and bailiff.
His older sons had their own families by this census, and the oldest,Lieutenant John G. Mitchell was one of the early military men in the area. He became one of the most important individuals in the development and success of the fruit industry in the Township of Collingwood.
When the Ontario Government established experimental fruit station in the province, he was given a contract to continue his experimental orchards. In the late 1800s he was growing a wide range of fruits, such as cherries, peaches, pears, plums, raspberries and gooseberries as well as different varieties of apples.
The 1881 Canadian household census for Collingwood Township, County of Grey East, Ontario, District 155 B, Division #1, on page 23, lists his household as #112.
In 1905, John G, his brother George, and other fruit growers in the district formed a cooperative fruit marketing company which was named the Georgian Bay Fruit Growers Association.
The Mitchells always dominated the company and sons and grandsons guided it to great expansion during the years to follow.
I am interested in Robert Mitchell's relationship to this family.
I have information on other members of the family and would be glad to share it with you, if you can provide an email or snail mail address.
Am research my GGrandmother Effie (Sinclair) Ross. She married Robert James Ross around 1861 in Chatsworth, Ontario, (Grey County)then moved to Ingelwood to raise their family
Would be pleased to receive any information or advice regarding sources for research.

THANKING YOU ALL IN ADVANCE; KEN MCDONALD
I have a McNaughton ancestor Reverend Duncan McNaughton who served as a presbyterian minister in North Keppel, Sarawak, Lake Charles and Kemble area from 1872 - 1877 which is right around the same time period that your McDonald family were living there.
The Reverend then went to Aylwin, Quebec from 1878 - 1882 before returning to North Keppel Township and adopting a girl Isabella Luxmore (original Surname) McNaughton born in 1877 on Manitoulin Island. Once again, a connection to your grandfather who moved to Manitoulin Island.
The Reverend owned a farm on Lot 41, Con. 19 and his obituary states that he died of heart failure while visiting his farm in Kemble in July 1899. I have not been able to find his grave but suspect he may be buried with his son, Hardy Stuart McNaughton who died of diptheria in 1877 and his sister Margaret (McNaughton) Cook who died in 1876 of cancer. Where were your family living in Keppel Township in 1877 at the time of your grandfather's birth?
I would not be surprised if your Kenneth is related to John "The Patriarch" McDonald who immigrated from Paisley Scotland to Ontario in July 1820 with his wife and children, many of whom were grown and had families of their own. A number of settlers came with them and my McNaughton family was most likely one of them. The Reverend's father Archibald McNaughton (also used the surname McNaught) was a native of Islay, a cooper by trade who came to Canada via Paisley, Scotland with his wife (Elizabeth Henry) and 6 young children and settled in July 1822 on Lot 3, Con. 3 of Caledon Township. He died in 1834 and his son Peter McNaught sold the property in 2 parts (50 acres each) in 1836 and 1846 and opened a cooperage in McCurdy's cornerns (now Belfountain). This property is currently called the Hart House Farm and is owned by the University of Toronto.
I have found a John McNaught in Keppel Township (Sarawak) who I believe may have been the Reverend's older brother but I have not had the time to research this further.
Also of note is that the eldest daughter of Archibald McNaughton married the William McDonald the youngest child of John McDonald (born 1805). It is believed that William and Elizabeth (McNaughton) McDonald moved to the United States but this has not been confirmed. Perhaps your grandfather is one of their son's children.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Laurie Lotz McNaughton
I am trying to put together a family tree of the John Bradey (1812-1876) and Eleanor(Ellen)Bunting(1821-1891)and their family of Edward John(1863-1926), William Edward(Willie)(1846-1894), Eliza Ann(Wilson)(1949- ),Letishia(Tish)(Arnott)(1852-1918), John Bunting(1854- ), Eleanor(ellen)(Walker)(1856-1943), James (1858-1947), Isabell(Taylor)(1860-1926), Alice Jane(Richardson)(1865-1908), Thomas (1845-1909). I am seeking descendants of the Charles & Sarah (Simons) Croft family from Osprey Township who might have in their possession some old photographs of this Croft family. I am in need of a particular photograph of one of their children (Walter Croft and his wife Margaret Reid) in order to complete our family history.
Charles Croft was the youngest brother of my great grandfather Joseph Croft and youngest son of Charles Croft and Elizabeth Radley. I have been working on the Croft family tree for a number of years and would be very interested in the descendants of Walter and Margaret Croft if you would be willing to share the information. Unfortunately I do not have a picture of Walter or Margaret.

Interested in your Solomon Kerr. What year was he born? I'm wondering if he could be brother to my Alexander Kerr, born abt. 1833 in Scotland. Alex came to Ontario in 1853 and settled in the Grey County area. He moved to the Manitoulin in the 1870s to be nearer to family. Alex was visiting family on the East Bluff of Gore Bay (Manitoulin) when he died in 1900.
I have lots of Kerr information if this is a connection!

I live in Cumbria, England,UK. but I search for my birth father/his family. My original story is on http://www.project-roots.com/weirj.html although since that was published I have found that the ID number is wrong and I really wonder whether he 'inflated' his rank to impress my mother, also I am trying every message board that I come across.I had a military researcher help me with that side and after a few years and a lot of emails, money, etc. later,he 'drew a blank'. If you can help please email me, I shall be, as you can well imagine, very grateful. Sylvia Lister
Looking for any information on Henry Weaver who married Frances Jane Wright. They had a son Percy Weaver, born 1893 in Brooke, Sarawak TWP. I am also interested in knowing what regiment Percy might have served in. He was in the service in 1916 when he married Alice Dixon in Owen Sound.
My husband's uncle Roy Alexander Mohrhardt was born in Tara, Ontario in 1919. When his mother Bertha (Locke)Mohrhardt died in 1931 while working at Alex Leslie's farm in Derby Twp. he & his sister & brother were orphaned. The Leslie's buried Bertha in their plot in Greenwood Cem. in Owen Sound. Then the children lived with their grandmother Mary Anne (Downey) Locke, Doig in Tara until she died in 1933 and they were separated and a family by the name of Banks took Roy into their family and educated him and treated him well. I'm not sure if they ever actually adopted him. I haven't been able to find any info on them but would like to know the story to add to our family tree.
A few years earlier I posted a message with regard to my family history for Ontario. My email address has changed and I would like to update it for those who wish to contact me. I can be reached at doncatling@hotmail.com I am still searching for my Catling family members who would have any information on Herbert Augustus Catling. Thanks
I am interested in contacting anyone who is researching the Peter McArthur who was about 86 and living in Sydenham Twp. when the 1871 census was taken. I particularly wonder if he is the same Peter who lived at Lot 10, Con. 5 West, Caledon Township around 1837.
I would like to correspond with anyone familiar with the history and genealogy of the Proctor family in Grey County. What I know is sketchy at this point: My great great grandfather was William Proctor. He was survived by his wife Mary Webb who passed away on 27 April 1930 in her 85th year. The funeral service was held at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. Richard Solomon, on Gershom St., Meaford, Ontario, on Tuesday the 29th and at the Thornbury Baptist Church. Internment at Union Cemetery, Thornbury, Ontario. Their children included my great grandfather Edward Thomas Proctor (a.k.a. Thomas Edward) who may have been born on 21 Oct. 1868 in Kimberly, Ontario (Township of Euphrasia, Grey County). According to the 1901 census his birth date was 11 Oct. 1869. The Ontario Archives Marriage Register (MS 932, Reel 80, Registration # 010969) says he was 24 on the date of his marriage to Agnes McKillican on 21 Feb. 1893 in Alliston, Ontario. His siblings may include four brothers (Jonas, Louis, Bill of Alberta and George of Georgetown) and two sisters (Mrs. Richard Solomon and Mrs. John Randle). Both Edward and Jonas or Joe moved to northern Ontario and are buried in the Webbwood Ontario area.
My husband's uncle Ted (Edward Arnold) Teed b in Duncan in 1906 married Velma A. Proctor. They are buried in Thornbury-Clarksburg Cemetery in Collingwood. I don't know her parents names. I attended Perth Collegiate with a Wade Proctor in late 1950's. My William Moore ancestor married Mary Proctor in Tyrone, Ireland in mid 1700's. If any of these names connect please let me know.

John Udell b. Circa 1833-35 Grey County, Ontario, Canada
by
I have been searching for years for John Udell. All I know is that he was born in Grey County, Ontario around the early 1830's(possibly 1833-35). Married Emma Collins (unknown where), moved to Michigan (unknown when) and died in Michigan 1879.
I realize this isn't a lot to work with, but hoping a resident Grey County expert might offer some guidance.
I just found your request for information on John Udell Grey County Ontario. I have a John Udell in my family, I don't know if this is the same person or not. John Udell was born 1835 or 1836. He Married Isabella Blakey May 5 1854 in Uxbridge Township. They had at least 3 children. 1. Henry Udell born 1856 2. Katherine Udell born 1859 and 3.Silas Udell born May 28 1862.
We do not have any information on where John or Isabella ended up. We know all 3 children lived in Osprey Township Grey County.
This may be the same people as Isabella's Sister Angleine Married David Hamlin and moved to Worth Towship Michigan about 1850. Please let me know if this is possibly the same people.
Once again searching the John Udell Family. John Udell married Isobella Blakey in Uxbridge Township, Ontario. About 1860 John and Isobella split up and Isobella married (Questionable) Elisha Allen. John moved to Grey county and later to michigan. Some beleive this is the same John Udell that married Emma Collins again (Questionable). I found a record in Michigan that I beleive is the marriage of John and Emma here is a copy of what I found. O'Dell is quite possibly Udell.
Researching marriage record of CATHERINE (Healy) JACKLIN in Egremont Twp., to JOHN CRONIN/CROMAN. This would have been between 1861 and 1885.
Any information is appreciated. Always searching - Katharine

I am reading a death notice from 1933 of a person who lived in Bentinck Township, on the Durham Road near Vickers, at the Rocky Saugeen. The family happens to be Wilson & Wiggins. My question is where is this located on the road to Hanover or on # 6 Highway heading for Chatsworth from Durham, Ont.
I am Interested in obtain a copy ot the Bentinck Township Book. Where could a person Purchase one.
David R. Bradey
David - The location is in Bentinck on Highway 4 heading toward Hanover. Vicker's Corners is about halfway between Durham and Allan Park.
There is a map in the book Farmlanes of Bentinck which shows the exact location of Vickers Corners. This book can be purchased - at least as late as September 2003 - in a bookstore right on the main street of Durham just before you go up over the river, on the right hand side of the road. I believe it can also be purchased through the Grey County Archives on their website and it may be available through Global Genealogy in Milton if that is closer.
My husband is a Wilson descendent and Fred Mott and I have been exchanging information for a number of years. He sent me your file, and I have a few questions. Please e-mail me and we can talk.
Thanks for your directions on Vicers Cornors. After I posted my message, I fund Fred Motts Map which helped a lot of the Durham area. I will be e-mailing you direct.
I have the paper death notice for Mrs. James Wilson ( Mary Wiggins).
E-Mail me direct.

Looking for information concerning this married couple residing in Grey North, Kepel in the 1871 census. He was apparently a farmer and a doctor? He was a member of a Wesleyan Methodist Church (does any one know where it might be located and if it is still extant?)
Not sure where he died or is buried. It is said he died when attending to ill folks in East Canada when a plague of sorts was rampant. His wife remarried a John Martin Loyst and had several children.
Have an old photo of 3 young ladies taken at the Dundalk studio and do not know which relatives they are. Need advice on where to post this photo for public viewing.

Hi, have sucessfully traced my tree in England. However 1881 Canadian cencus for Euphrasia, Grey East, Ontario shows that a Matthew Symonds, wife Ann and 5 children were living there. All were born in England except the last child, Lydia who at age 5 in 1881 was born in Ontario. I have a Matthew Symonds same age etc who was missing for awhile in England but reappears in 1890 aged 50 to marry my Gt Grandmother. Is it the same man, did he leave or lose a family in Canada or is it just a coincidence in names and birth dates? Any information on this family would be appreciated, especially where he was born in England as this may rule him out. I have been trying to research my grandmother's paternal family. I received some articles from the Grey County Archives and in them was a census that listed my grandmother having an older sister named Florence. 4 years later Florence died and on her tombstone is the name Florence Lash.
Florence's family is the McMeeken family. Florence was born Dec 21 1896. She is listed as the daughter of James and Elizabeth McMeeken but they were aged 68 and 57(possibly her grandparents) at the time of this census. What makes me suspicious of her parentage is that my grandmother's mother was 20 at the time, living in the same household and is also listed as a sister to Florence and my grandmother. My grandmother was born out of wedlock and I suspect that Florence may have been too. I believe they may have the same father. Florence died April 18th,1905 and is buried with James and Elizabeth McMeeken in the Maplewood Cemetary.
Please email me if anyone out there has any info. My grandmother used to claim that her father's name had Reid in it, but that was all she knew about him.
My email address is jmiller@dia.net.
Thankyou.
I am looking for information on an Arthur Johnston from Artemesia twp. who married an Isabella Sinclair. Looking for their descendants. They married in 1873. They are buried in Vandeleur cemetery. Some of their children are buried in Markdale cemetery.
I am working on our family history. I have information from another relative that William Geddes sold his farm to the Moonie family (Parents of Nelly McLung).
First it said he was a butcher in Durham Ontario and then says he sold his farm to the Moonie Family sometime after his wife died in 1880. Up to 1883.
Does anyone know how I can find out where his farm was?
I wish to verify this information.
I live in Calgary so the internet or books are my options.
THanks Carol
Thanks
I did a little research that might point you in some different directions. The Genealogical Library in Edmonton, at the Armouries, and the Edmonton Public Library have many Ontario sources for Grey County. You might want to have a look at these places also. I am from Ontario but was in Alberta in August and was very surprised by the amount of Ontario literature available. What you can't find there is probably available through interlibrary loan.
The History of Sullivan Township has a short article on Nellie Mooney McClung. It says that the family lived south of Chatsworth and moved to Manitoba in 1880.
Chatsworth is on Highway 6 between Owen South and Durham. A map of Ontario should have both of these places on it, so you can get your bearings from it.
I recall seeing a Province of Ontario Historical Plaque for Nellie McClung on Highway 6, between Williamsford (this is a village north of Durham) and Chatsworth. This plaque was commemorating her birthplace. You might be able to get the exact location from a website on the plaques.
A History of the County of Grey might also give you some leads. It has a reprinted section from the Gazetter of 1865. For Sullivan Township, there is a John Geddes listed as living at Concession 1 Lot 15. Based on other information, this lot does front on Highway 6 and is situated south of Chatsworth. Whether it is the same family or not I don't know. If you look at the census records for 1861, 1871 and 1881 for Sullivan you might get some other leads.
The census search for the 1881 Canadian Census on the website of the Church of the Latter Day Saints might also be of help. It does list the Mooney family as living in Turtle Mountain, South West Extension, Manitoba in 1881, so that would seem inconsistent with the dates that you have but support the information in the History of Sullivan Township. Checking for a Geddes family on this website might also give you other leads. Sullivan Township is part of Grey North. Durham is in Bentinck Township, Grey South.
The History of Sullivan also says that Nellie was born on October 20, 1873 in a log house about 1 1/2 miles south of Chatsworth. The location of the Geddes property is further from Chatsworth than this.
Good Luck. I hope this gives you some other leads.
I am interested in the Arnott family of Daniel and Jane Arnott, who lived at lot 7, Conc 10 Euphrasia Twp. Grey Co. in the 1871 Census. As their son, Daniel Married a Letishia(Tish) Bradey(Brady)(B 1852 and D 1918). My information has it that they moved to Chippewa Twp., Sainte Marie, Mich. USA, between 1871 and 1887. My records show they had two Children Ellie (Benson) and Bella Win. Tish parents are John and Eleanor Bradey, which is my GG Grandfather. Any information on the above would be appreciated.

Hello
I am looking for ANY descendents of "Francis McCartney" who came from Ireland with his wife "Bridget Holleron". They resided in Dornoch Ontario. They had several children.
Am seeking information on gg/grandparents, Benjamin and Elizabeth Hallock. They were long time residents of the Meaford area. I believe they were married in or around 1838/39. Their first born, Caleb was born in 1839. Together they had 9 children. Their son, Lorenzo Dow Hallock, born 1852, married Sarah Viola Dewstow in 1872 and are my g/grandparents. My main interest is the surname of Elizabeth. Benjamin was born in 1813 in Elizabethtown of Rev. William A. and Catherine (DeGroat) Hallock. Elizabeth was born in 1823, parents unknown. Both are buried in Lakeview Cemetery, plot 556. She passed in 1888, he is 1892. Would appreciate any information, suggestions or direction in helping to find out gg/grandmother's maiden name. Thank you most sincerely, Bev - MI

Looking for my GGG Grandparents that once lived in the Collingwood, Staynar, Owen Sound and Chesley area. Looking for Joseph Eveleigh who married Mary Ann Cross and also looking for Donald Kelly that married Margaret Campbell. I know the Campbell and Kelly Family came from Port Ellen, Scotland and lived in Collingwood or Staynar area. Joseph Eveleigh I believe was born in either England or Ireland. I am unsure where Mary Ann Cross's family came from. They all moved to Michigan around 1890 from Canada. If you have information please email me at rogerweston1966@yahoo.com
