I have started to construct a new pond, which I hope to keep koi and other fish types. I am not a novis when it comes to keeping cold freshwater fish, but after looking at the impresive Koi Cymra website I think I may have started something that I should'nt have.
Being an engineer my self I have started to construct a 1m deep by 5m long by 3m wide raised pond. it stands 600mm out of the ground. I have installed a bottom drain which I only intended to use to clean the pond out with. All walls internally are built with Class A engineering bricks, as they onyl absorb 5% water. Sandwiched between this course and the outer course of blocks will be a 35 year liner which will be protected by a geotex fabric both sides. This sounds all a bit tricky, but i wanted the bricks showing inside the pond rather than a black liner. I will of course take the precaustion of sealing the bricks with G4 sealer. This is where your readers can help me!!!!
I intend to use a skimmer and returned water via a waterfall.
After reading a lot of books can some one advise me on the following.
1/ What Pump, low running costs
2/ Filter, low maintenace inexpensive. All in one with U.V.
3/ Do I heat in winter or do I heat at all.
4/ Do I draw water also from the bottom drain as well as the pond space.
5/ I wish to keep Koi as mentioned, are there more hardy koi than other types.
6/I did intend to use a Fishmate 15000 all in one. Can someone tell me if there any good or do I need to use other equipment to keep healthy koi.
I know I am asking alot, but Can someone help
Cheers Brian.
