Hi John,
The basic principle is that the UV is fed with relatively clean/ clear water (after the filter) so as to aid UV light transmission so as the UV can work as effectively as possible. This is a well tried and tested approach.
As a guide you need 10 watts of UV per 1000 UK gallons. Hope that helps ?
