The most important thing with any pump is that it does not contain metals such as copper etc. The section exposed to water needs to be either stainless steel or plastic.
When you make up your multibays, I would strongly recommend fitting valves at the bottom of weach chamber so you can back wash the filters and remove any crud that will accumulate on the base.
Vortex assemblies are excellent and it's a good idea to include one. The amount of debris they remove is quite incredible.
