I believe you are wrong. But I understand your point.... And I might be wrong:
By your logic I could hook up a drinking straw to the bottom drain and it would flow even faster right??? But we know that it wouldn't. I am new to ponds/koi/etc so take everything I say with a grain of salt. But I have been an analyst for many years and have good sense
I believe that the pump doesn't actually 'pull' through your filter (actually it probably depends on your setup). If your pump is pumping from a 'holding' area then its not actually pulling through your filter its simply emptying the holding area of water as the level of the holding area tries to balance out with the pond level. If the holding area doesn't level off fast enough (ie bottom drain to small or flow rate much less that what the pump is asking for) then your holding area gets pumped dry (almost as water would continually be fed into the holding area, probably losts off slurping sound like when you get to the bottom of your drink with a straw).
If your pump actually is pulling through a filter then maybe your 3 inch pipe IS flowing faster but wouldn't that be placing extra work on the pump like sucking a milk shake through a small straw requires more effort than through a larger straw?
Again, I am only in the process of building my first pond and I'm new to this so please don't take offense and what I am saying - I'm still learning and can be completely wrong.
