Air diffuser - Bottom drain

by

I was intending to fit an air diffuser type bottom drain to my new pond but when I enquired about availability at my local koi dealer they mentioned that they had experienced problems with these blocking up. I did not have the chance to go into detail with them but presumed they meant the earlier ones where the air line was threaded through the main bottom drain pipe and not the later types with the extra ducting set up.

Can anyone set my mind at ease about these. Also could debris get lodged in the smaller duct pipe and cause problems with water quality or can this be sealed at the bottom drain or periodically flushed in any way?
