Vortex filter

by

Hi,

I am a beginner planning to build 1,100 gallon pond with very limited budget. I incline to use vortex settling chamber as a my mechanical filter before the water goes to the bio filter. but I have the below questions. Any answers are appriciated.

Can I use a straight barrow such as a garbage can in place of a commercial vortex filter? I presume any cyclindrical shape will have the centrifugal force. But I am not sure how a flat bottom will work in settling sediment and waste in comparison to the funnel bottom as in the commercial vortex chamber.

Can I put the vortex filter 1 to 2' above the pond level? I plan to cycle the waste water for plants. I thought the water might be a good use for plants

I have an existing sub pum with 1,500 GPM. Can I put this sub pump in the bio filter chamber(after the vortex chamber)? How much suction would be lost?

Once again, I appriciate any answer and good luck to all pond hobbyists.
