No difference at all with the fish apart from there breeding the Japanese have put a lot of time and effort into there genetic make up . You can get good and bad Koi from any were in the world It will depend on what you want from your Koi if you only want to keep them for your own pleasure then it will not make any difference but if you want to get into the show side of Koi then you will have to spend a lot of money on good quality fish from renowned breeders hope this helps Jim.
