With the ponds featured on this website the filters are fed from the pond under gravity and then pumped back to the pond.
The skimmer is mainly used to keep the surface of the pond clear of any debris and does improve the appearance of the pond. As the discharge from the skimmer is pumped then it generally is returned to the pond via a waterfall, deep water return, or a venturi.
Some people do not run their skimmers 24 hours a day.
