this would be the best way as the water entering the filter would be cleaner coming from the bottom drain, rather than the pump macerating all the bits of debris before it enters filter....obviously, the pump fed method is going to need a lot more 'settling out' than the gravity fed method
did you mean unwilling in your last statement ?....what is the depth of the pond now ?.... you could always do a bit of both, build pond a little higher and also dig down so filter can be gravity fed... Gravity is always the best method
