I have found the best way is to remove the blanket weed little and often, and not let it grow too long. One way is to have a length of bamboo and slit it up at one end. You can then place the bamboo amongst the threads of the blanket weed and then continue by turning the bamboo so the weed forms around it like spaghetti. It will still leave small strands floating around and discolouring the water but that cannot be avoided. You can remove it with a net, but it is very heavy, and this method will make even more mess.
