I am back from Daytona. I am thrilled to say I saw Dave race his last race...no it wasn't the ending we all wanted, but he made the race and fought until the end...he wanted to end his Cup career where he started it, and he was able to do so, so all in all it was a sucess.
The best part of my trip was on Tuesday, when I visited his Arden, NC shop...I was amazed to see how he was able to compete for all these years in that small shop...no bells and whistles...no gleaming floors...there is not even a sign in front of his shop (I would have never found the place if the trailer wasn't there)
Dave was there and got to talk to him for a little while...he was running around talking to Trickle on the phone; looking at the owners' points in case of a rainout (Looks like he would be 43rd in line...might just make it if it rains!!!)...and taking time to talk to me.
I tried to be brief, cause he was busy (so much for retirement...I never saw a 60 year old man walk so fast!!!), but I showed him some old momentos I had (a keychain from 1969 the drivers sold to support thew PDA) and about the time I met him in Pocono 2 years ago, when he signed autographs long after EVERY other trailer was closed for the night.
They pretty much do everything but build engines in there...they have a chassis jig and are working on a car...they were hastily putting on the final touches on the Rockingham car also.
They are working on a single race packages...they would like to be at Atlanta, Darlington, and Bristol (sounds to me they want to run the same races as in 2001), but nothing definate after Rockingham.
He is talking to drivers like Lepage and Pressley (Jayski reports Greg Sacks) and I suggested looking at Mike Stefanik and Ted Christopher.
Dwayne will be racing in Busch "very soon" with Warranty Gold as the sponsor...no it is not the full-year deal, but he will be racing...Dwayne has done a lot for this team, he has been there since 1993 and has helped to bring sponsors such as Prodigy, Olive Garden, and Realtree(the 3 biggest sponsors in Dave's career) and Dave is high on him and hopes to give him a chance in Cup later this year.
I am sorry to write this long a message, but in a 45 minutes span, I got so much out of this trip, and just wanted to share
