Aight, let's get one thing straight:
"Romu. Tread carefully. The ice is thin and the water is frigid. If you don't choose your words carefully, you might get pushed."
Drask, you know better than anyone that this should not matter in the least. We're in a freeform online ROLL PLAYING game. It's not Personal--it's Imagination. It's Creativity. It's Fun.
If you're people over at St. Mark's, (I'm sorry girls, I forget your names at the moment,) can't handle a little good natured banter, and are going to take what my CHARACTER does to their CHARACTER personally, they're in the wrong place. It's that simple.
When this all started, back when Val and I were still at SM with the legendary Lord Wilson, (the inspiration for our clan) he taught us how to extend our imaginations into OTHER characters, meaning, NOT OUR OWN.
Yes our characters are special to us, and yes they are ours, but they are not real, and anything I say to someone elses character through my character is meant for a FANTASY world that we play in. Taking it personally is foolish. Let's just think about that for a second...
Say I have an imaginary rubber ducky character and Des says through Drask, "Ducky, I'm going to EAT you!" (even tho he's veggie) and I start to cry in real life and get pissed off at Des, when what I should be doing is writing, "Ducky ran away as quickly as he could, but because he doesn't actually have any legs, Drask caught him and swallowed him whole. But then Ducky got revenge by not being swallowed properly and now Drask squeks when ever he talks."
Get my point?
Let's have fun with this, and girls, I'm sorry if you're offended in real life by what Romulus does. I'm sorry if you think he's real--he's not--and if you do, I have the number of a very good shrink who I think you should see.... =)
But I'm sure Des has told you the rules of this game already, and I'm just repeating it all...
Oh, and one more thing that all you writers will take interest in...
Great writers know that they must love the characters they create. And they also know that they must put them through hell before bringing them to heaven. That's the way the game is played, not just here, but everywhere. Think of your favorite book...the lead character ALWAYS goes through the shit. That's what we do as writers. We play God, (because we ARE God.)
So get over it if you haven't already, and keep on posting. I haven't seen this much energy in the Quest since...hell, I don't know when. You new guys are doing one helluva job--just don't take it personally, cause it's not.
okay, I'm done.
Romu out.

"Men," the elf muttered, "always thinking with their stomachs."
its HUMANS dood.. =) ahah
u gota rock the elvish arrogance to the truest u know
but seriously guys.
from wat des told me on IM it sounded like chori + tarisse are personably upsetted, n that is a real happening.. But u have to realize that this friction is actuallly good and well.
i dont write much, i'm not a writer like des or roman... so i'll speak with less eloquence and speed or something.
yeah. we dont even know your real names..
ppl say i talk in riddles,.. if romu's char makes u angry or mad or sad.. then already what u are doing is fine... the energy contributes into the story and makes it great to look back on..
anyhow
i just confused myself..

on both your parts. Roman--I understand that the cahracters are not real. They (the girls) simply don't realize how to take some of the things said. They're new to the written RP thing. And yes, I'd say Romu's doing a damn good job at what he does. Damn good. So on the one hand, the girls should either toughen up themselves, or (barring that) toughen up their characters (waits for chori to take up the stiletto heels against Romu alla Emyr), but on the other hand...
Enough. We are writers, and we speak through our characters when all other words fail us. Until the time when we've all got the mindlink thing going, that'll have to suffice. The energy at the moment IS awesome--I can't remember ever having seen seven posts written in twelve hours. And joey--I'm simply supplying a demand: people (smaakers) want to write. They need someone to put up threads. I'm the only one here to do that. SO, I do that. And Drask's not necessarily a veggie dragon, he's just not all that keen about the killing innocent sheep thing--he abhors destruction (of all the ironies).
But I say that at some point joey and Roman and I need to either get together in person or online and chat about the quest, where it is, where its going, and how it should get there.
There are my two cents...

Hi. I'm one of the new questers at St. Mark's, and I'm a freshman. Chori and I are trying to establish our characters, and we are having a bit of a difficulty when we are in turn being characterized by a womanizing human with a thing for drink and greenweed. If that difficulty was resolved, then we could all be firends.

it's often hard to fit in as a newcomer in a group, and quest reflects real life. it will take a little while for your character to find her place. that's part of the fun of the quest. don't worry about it and just keep on posting, cuz in real life we're all good people and you'll fit in fine

I don't think anything the "In Game Romulus" says or does should have any effect on how you develop your characters. Nothing is in stone. If there's anything my years of questing has taught me, it is that the story can change whenever we want it to. Yes we have objectives, (the Quest,) but how we get there is communaly arbitrary.
Our game is not a tyranny of one, it is a tyranny of the majority. Meaning, I do not have ultimate control over who your character is or what they do. Yes we take liberties when we write. In order to move the story forward we, as questers, have to engage other characters in conversation and action. This is a fine art.
I respect your characters very much. If I didn't, why would I spend my (precious) time including them in my posts?
So Romulus is a womanizer and a junkie. Big Deal? What are you going to do about it? Who's to stop you from turning the tables on him, or anyone else? Be a seductress, or a manizer if you don't like it. Do whatever the hell you want to, it's Pretend. It's TOTALLY FREE.
I mean that with heart-attack grade severity.
I noticed, and I'm sure others did too, that your very next post, after my "broken skirt" line, was a history of who your character is, contradicting just about EVERYTHING Romulus supposed. And then Tam comes in with a little extra twist. Do you see the beauty of this system?
Participating in this game is a creative orgy. We work off each other to write a story with everyones consent. Countless times my character has been used in other people's posts--everything from a human shield to a zombie, (like Alv, hehe...)
It's not personal, I swear.
My character is just that, a CHARACTER. He is a figment of my imagination that has been refined over a period of, jesus guys, how long has it been? Five years? He has changed from a very two dimensional, straight edged, human warrior with a grudge against evil and too many ex-girlfriends into a multi-faceted personality.
The Knight in Shining Armor does not exist, so why should I pretend that he does? Everyone has their faults, as should every character. I choose to make mine known. Do this, and your character will reward you with realism.
Contrary to popular belief, great stories are not driven by intricate plots and "cool twists". Great stories are made with believable characters interacting in realistic ways.
React to what Romulus does. Act on him and he will react to you. So far, all you've been doing is reacting to make-believe dialogue that has NO relavence to who you are as a person. In fact, I'm sure you're quite nice. Des wouldn't be your friend if you weren't.
People who know me well, be they friends or enemies, (well, mostly friends, because I don't have many enemies,) will tell you that I am a very honest person. My life is too short to beat around the bush. You might think this, me, Romulus, harsh. So be it. But I encourage you to suck it up, realize that it's not about you, it's about the game, and continue to work with us.
I see great potential in your writing, (both of you,) and if you'd like any help with "developing" your characters feel free to contact me, (atwromulus@hotmail.com) Writing is my life. It is what I do.
And as for the "drink and greenweed" thing, how do you know that two months from now, (if you stick with it that long) ya'll's chars won't be sitting down with Tam and Romu, passing a pipe and sipping Fine Elven Whiskey?
I encourage you to be as creative as your courage allows. There is nothing to fear here, we are all your allies. It's about one thing, and never forget this, it's about having fun.
aight? Peace.

Thank you for your response/suggestions/everything else. To ease your mind, I think we've gotten the point. It does take time, I hope you realize, for people to adapt their writing style and mind thought to that of others, especially when they are simply "thrown in" (and no I am not complaining). It's just kind of hard to establish a character without knowing the other people and then having them say such things, and not know what they mean. Hopefully, we'll be able to get to know each other (or at least each other's writing style) so that these types of confusions won't happen again.
Oh and by the way, the way I created Tarisse's past was NOT to contradict everything you said (Chori says that goes for her, too) but the way I imagine her and her past to be (long before your 'broken skirt' post).
We thank you for your gracious offering of help, but we both think that this will be more effective if we figure it out ourselves. Because, of course, to make your character all the more realistic, you must meet your character in your mind, must talk and learn about your character's thoughts, feelings, and traits which can only be done privately.
Oh yeah, and the whole womanizer and junkie thing is what we like to call a joke.
So, once again, we thank you. And ask that you do not treat us like preschoolers and tell us the same thing way to many times. I think we got it the first time (and this was not written to start a fight, so don't bother, it's a waste of your time).
Sincerely,
Tarisse and Chori
