On Saturday the 9th of October, get thee to the Holy Trinity Church on Boar Lane in Leeds city centre to witness this:
Circle
The Finnish masters of cyclical hypnotic psych finally return! Their last few records have demonstrated an emerging talent for interspersing their trademark vortex of sound with folksy and ambient interludes. As ever though, operatic and goblin-esque vocals and ultra-tight Can/Faustish grooves are to the fore.
Ultralyd
This Norwegian improvising ensemble features Noxagt bassist Kjetil Brandsdal along with veteran reeds player Frode Gjerstad and newbloods Anders Hana and Morten Olsen on guitar and drums respectively. Surely a fine representation of the noiser end of free improvisation, on Load Records.
Guapo
Probably the finest musical outfit Britain has to offer right now. This quartet of keyboards, keyboards, bass and drums continue our country's fine tradition of experimentation within a supposedly rock framework as previously evidenced by the likes of King Crimson and This Heat. Throw in a healthy dose of Magma and you'll have a good idea where they're coming from. Their last album, "Five Suns", was an epic masterpiece, and since its release the 46 minute title track has matured even further into a bafflingly complex yet powerful and elating live experience. Can you tell I'm excited to see them again? New album out next year on Ipecac.
Jazzfinger
Newcastle's premiere export of cinematic/theatrical drones and scrapings. Their performances usually incorporate a strong visual element, ranging from playing in total darkness through to completely blinding strobes and floodlights. Their shows have been some of the most captivating and mood altering experiences of the last year for me, and in such a majestic setting this should be no different.
Like a Kind of Matador
Currently entering the "medium-volume" phase of their career, and completing work on their first album. Guitar, flute, voice, keyboards and drums combine like little Constructicons of density, space, volume and melody to make a Devastator of total music.
Birds of Delay
Swirling psych noise from this guise of these Nottingham turned Leeds natives, also trading under Birds of Prey and Birds of Display.
The bands are organised to alternate between "non-rock" and "rock" based music for maximum variety throughout the day. The first band will be on NO LATER THAN 6.00PM, so get there early. Price and stagetimes/further information TBA (probably £6 though).
