Before this particular addendum starts, I want to say, for the record, that I did not write this part. You will be able to tell from its upcoming title.

PART V: AGAINST JUST ABOUT EVERY SHIP THAT ANYONE CARES ABOUT

June 13 2009, 3:21 PM

Im not really sure why Im writing this; probably because Im a quixotic nutjob, as well as the writer of the previous four parts older brother. And the thing is, Im not actually against all ships. However...

Addendum essay

June 13 2009, 3:26 PM

Before this even starts, it's me again. This was all written as a Word Document (of course, my quixotic brother e-mailed this to me, but same difference). This is why almost all the grammar and punctuation has been screwed up. It's not my fault.

On with quixotic nutjob's side...

SECTION I: ZUTARA

I disagree with the authors thoughts on Kataras motivations for being angry with Zukoand, as the author has said that you dont go from being confused to madly in love in a couple of days, you also dont go from hating someones guts to wanting to marry them within a few months, Im fairly sure. Now, if the final scene had been, say, set five years later, then Zutara mightve worked. Might.

SECTION II: KATAANG

Same objections as the author of the previous part on Kataang. Once again, had the final scene been five years after the next to last scene, with a 17-year-old Aang and a 19-year-old Katara, the kiss would have made a lot more sense. As is, no.

SECTION III: MAIKO

Unlike the author of the main part of this essay, I am not an Avatar fanatic. I will also state that I will not judge whether Mai loves Zuko, the idea of Zuko, Zukos firebending, or the fact that during The Beach when Zuko took his shirt off, trumpets sounded and doves were released. Humor aside, Mai and Zuko have very few similarities except angry fathers and terrible childhoods. The opposites may attract, as the saying goes, but the similarities are what hold things together. Therefore, no.

SECTION IV: SUKKA

This one actually makes sensethey meet early in the first season, get back together in season two, proceed to have the obligatory Ive realized my feelings for you I was such an idiot for not realizing it earlier lets make out scene, then undergo relational maturity (well, as much as anything involving Sokka can be said to be mature. Whats with the rose in his mouth and the expecting of Suki in The Southern Raiders, anyway?).

SECTION V: TOKKA

All the age objections that apply to Kataang are even worse for this onethough I must admit their shared immaturity could workthough, in all honesty, Sokka needs a keeperSukinot another immature nut.

SECTION VI: TAANG

The ages worktheyre both twelvebut the anti-Kataang Aang is too young for romance argument applies doubly here. A more mature Toph, and a five, or even four, year gap between next to last scene and last scenemaybe. As is, no.

SECTION VII: ANY AND ALL SLASH PAIRINGS

AAAAAAAAH! Do not speak of such things! Its a kids show! Thank you.

SECTION VIII: THE MINOR PAIRINGS

Harutara: I know nothing of Haru, but it wouldve been funny.

Jetara: Hes dead. Need I say more?

Junko: This would have been very funny.

Jun/Iroh: This wouldve been really funnythe overly aggressive bounty hunter and the serene general/tea guru.

Azulaang, Sokkla: NO. Nonono. No. For obvious reasonsthe girls nuts.

Mai/Aang: Ahnot likely. Aang and Zuko actually share some personality traitsstubbornness, a taste for melodrama, and they care very passionately about more things than just romance.

Ty Lokka: Sokkas not interested.

Ty Laru: They dont even know each other. Seriously.

Meng/Aang: Ive never even heard of this girl, except from the author. I will say naught.

Jinko, Songko: Jins probably still angry with him for leaving her, and Song is angry about the ostrich-horse, that, apparently, Zuko stole from her. I dont even know why Im discussing this.

SECTION IX: CONCLUSION ON SHIPS

As you can see, there are large objections to any and all of the major pairings, except Sukka. Any of the minor pairings would have required major plot shifts, except for Jun/Iroh, an unlikely pairing in any event. Heres a thought: no romance for any of the major characters, except maybe Suki and Sokkathat would have A. been rather refreshing from the normal kids series plotline, and B. taken the characters ages into account, and C. made sense based on characterization.

However, there is a larger problem here that no one is mentioningthe mere fact that there are shipping wars to begin with. Why? Come on, yall. First, its a cartoon. Second, romance should not have been the point of the showthe unfortunate thing was that the romances have, in some peoples minds, become the point of the showwhich was supposed to be bringing down the Fire Lord, Aang figuring out how to use his Avatar powers, and saving the world. Not whether Katara would end up making out with Zuko, Aang, Haru, or, for ultimate grins, Longshot. This, of course, brings up the justified question of why on earth Im writing this essay. I guess I just like to argue.

PART VI: VARIOUS COMPLAINTS ON THE SHOW

June 13 2009, 3:27 PM

SECTION I: STYLE PROBLEMS
1. Ludicrous dialogue: Dont believe me? Watch the last five minutes Day of Black Sun, Pt. 2

2. Plot issues: Dropping a romance in between two seasonsthat was the largest reason, I think, for the outcry against Maiko. I could be wrong, though.

3. An insane series finale, involving OOC behavior by everyoneexcept maybe Aang. Zuko, the loner, goes to attack Azula with Katara. Mai actually displays emotion. Katara goes with Zuko when she doesnt want to take vengeance on someone. Sokka and Toph act kinda mature. Sukiwell, maybe shes not OOC. And Ozai gets really stupid. Really, really stupid.

4. Does no one understand totalitarian state political theory? Get rid of Long Feng, people. Hes a major threat to your plans and the Earth Kingdomyou dont have to show the execution, simply mention that he was dealt withor send him somewhere far away from Ba Sing Se, and, by extension, the Dai Li.
