I am a novice runner training for my first marathon. I am debating about running today I think I have shin splints. Should I stop until I feel no pain or just scale back?

HI, I was training last summer for a marathon, and I began to have pretty intense pain, which I assumed to be shin splints, so I just stretched more and continued training. Turns out I had developed a stress fracture and had to see a sports therapist, and he advised me to stop running for 3 to 4 weeks, and then start again using Orthotics.
I would take a day off inbetween runs, and take it easy.If you arent currently running on dirt or sand, I would sugguest trying it. Or even the grass.
The sidewalks can be killer on your legs, especially if you are developing shin splints or a stress fracture.
