High school training

Here's the scoop-
In Brainer Mn. there is a class in the high school that trains (over the spring semester-18 weeks) any athlete that signs up, to race a triathlon. The triathlon is broken up into compettitive and non-competitive. The race length is 1 mile swim in the pool, 50 mile bike on rural streets, and finishes with a 10 mile run on the rural streets.

There are some concerned track coaches that think the tri is too long, and should be shortened because the 4 months of training isn't enough. Also there is some question as to weather athletes can handle the lenght because they have young bodies that aren't developed yet. (like how you must be 18 to race a marathon)Most of the training is done on hard tile floors because there is snow outside. Should it be shortened, should it be made a full year class to allow them to train better? What do you think? It would be awesome if you could reply and give some info (such as if your a coach etc.) to give some validity to the answers that I bring to the athletes and teacher. Thanks, Titus Goodew, Brainerd MN.
