Ice or Heat

I am training for my first marathon and my long runs are now up to about 12-15 miles. The last few miles of my long runs my legs are pretty well shot. No specific joint pain or anything like that, just generally fatigued and start to lock up, etc. It usually takes my legs a few days to recover also. My question is, would it be most beneficial for me to utilize ice or heat in my recovery and preparation for my next long run. I tried an ice massage on my legs last night and they do feel better this morning. When should I use heat and when should I use ice? Thanks.
